Hawaiian Airlines is rolling out complimentary Wi-Fi via SpaceX's Starlink on board commercial flights this week, the companies told CNBC, the first major U.S. airline to offer the satellite-based service. Hawaiian's plan for complimentary Wi-Fi comes as airlines ramp up their offerings for high-speed connectivity. "It really feels like an experience that should not be possible when you get on a commercial airline flight. Hawaiian signed an agreement with SpaceX in April 2022, looking to utilize the Starlink network – which consists of more than 5,000 satellites in low Earth orbit and boasts more than 2.3 million customers worldwide. The airline didn't previously offer inflight Wi-Fi.

CNN —Alaska Air (ALK) on Sunday announced it will buy Hawaiian Airlines (HA) for $1.9 billion. “This is a fantastic deal that bring two airlines that have amazing loyalties in our regions together,” said Alaska Airlines CEO Ben Minicucci in a news conference, adding that the merger will give customers in both states expanded domestic and international choices. The deal, which is forecast to take nine to 18 months, will see both companies keep their brands, a unique decision that Minicucci and Hawaiian Airlines CEO and President Peter Ingram say was made out of respect for the nearly hundred-year legacy of both airlines and the communities they serve. “In Alaska Airlines, we are joining an airline that has long served Hawai‘i, and has a complementary network and a shared culture of service,” said Ingram. “With the additional scale and resources that this transaction with Alaska Airlines brings, we will be able to accelerate investments in our guest experience and technology, while maintaining the Hawaiian Airlines brand.”Minicucci, who will become the CEO of both airlines, heralded the move as pro-consumer will allow for more robust domestic competition with United, Delta, Southwest and American airlines, which currently own 80% of the market share.

Alaska Airlines on Sunday announced plans to acquire Hawaiian Airlines in a $1.9 billion deal. The combined airline will maintain the Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines brands but with a single operating platform, Alaska Airlines said in a news release. The company would provide service to 138 destinations, including nonstop flights to airports in the Americas, Asia, Australia and the South Pacific. For residents in Hawaii, the company would offer three times the current number of destinations from the state to destinations throughout North America, either nonstop or with one connection. “In Alaska Airlines, we are joining an airline that has long served Hawaii, and has a complementary network and a shared culture of service,” Peter Ingram, president and chief executive of Hawaiian Airlines, was quoted as saying in the news release.

Airlines are scrambling to find spare parts due to an engine recall which threatens to cancel flights, the Financial Times first reported. JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, and Wizz Air are among the fleets which will be affected, and they've been updating investors on how they plan to deal with the disruption. Peter Ingram, the CEO of Hawaiian Airlines, told investors it had "spare support" from engines returning from the shop, or spares "supplied by Pratt & Whitney to support the operating carriers." Spirit, JetBlue, and Hawaiian Airlines did not immediately respond to Insider's request for comment, sent outside US working hours.

The appetite for travel is persisting despite soaring airfares, which have been fueled by a pilot shortage and aircraft delivery delays. Even after Labor Day, when travel normally slows down, "it's just not the case this year, especially for international travel," she said. But if a recession hits, that could jeopardize all consumer spending — and prompt even higher-income Americans to rethink big trips. Tim Quinlan, senior economist at Wells Fargo, expects the holiday season will be the "last hurrah" for consumers.

The carrier will operate on behalf of Amazon to transport cargo, joining other operators like Sun Country Airlines. On Friday, Hawaiian Airlines announced a deal with Amazon to lease and maintain 10 Airbus A330-300F cargo jets to fly on behalf of the e-commerce giant. According to Airbus, all 10 A330s, which are bigger than the Boeing 767s, will be converted from passenger service to cargo jets. Sun Country and Silver Airways are the only other passenger airlines to fly cargo on behalf of Amazon; they use Boeing 737-800BCF and ATR 72-500F converted freighters, respectively.
