CNN —A musical gem was recently uncovered from the vaults of the Luther Vandross Estate — a soulful, never-before-heard rendition of The Beatles’ song “Michelle.”The cassette tape was simply labeled June 1, 1989. On Thursday, a new music video of Vandross’ rendition of “Michelle” is set to debut on YouTube. This discovery adds to a catalog of musical milestones that solidified Vandross as an R&B genre-defining artist. The Beatles’ “Michelle,” written by John Lennon and Paul McCartney, won the Grammy for song of the year in 1967. His life and entertainment career are celebrated in the upcoming CNN film “Luther: Never Too Much,” directed Dawn Porter.

CNN —The Beatles earned their first Grammy nominations since 1997 on Friday. The iconic rock group was also recognized in the best rock performance category for the track. This year’s nods for “Now and Then” marks the first Beatles nominations since the late ’90s, when they won three Grammys in 1997. However, the Beatles aren’t the only classic rock ‘n rollers from that era to appear on this year’s list of Grammy nominees. They earned their first nod in 1978 for “Some Girls,” which was recognized for album of the year at the time.

CNN —Unreleased Jimi Hendrix songs are among an array of memorabilia belonging to the late musician that is set to go up for auction next month. “It’s an incredible collection that not only reflects the personal life of Jimi Hendrix but also transports you back to a pivotal moment in music history,” he added. A payslip for Hendrix and his bandmates are among the collection of his personal items up for auction in November. The live-streamed London auction will take place on November 15 and will include more than 400 lots of music memorabilia, according to Propstar’s website. By the end of that year, his band Jimi Hendrix Experience had released the hit song “Hey Joe,” followed by an influential first album the following year.

The legendary rocker, 74, was due to perform with E Street Band in Marseille, Prague and Milan. He canceled two US shows in March and August over other health issues. Paul McCartney has added another feather in his cap as the United Kingdom’s first billionaire musician, the Sunday Times reported in the 2024 edition of its annual Rich List, published Friday. According to the Times, the 81-year-old Beatles alum and his wife Nancy are worth £1 billion ($1.3 billion), up from £950 million ($1.2 billion) in 2023. Beyoncé earlier this year released her hit album “Cowboy Carter,” in which she reimagined the Beatles’ 1968 song “Blackbird,” originally written by McCartney. London CNN —A rarely seen 1970 film following the Beatles just before the band’s breakup will be released on Disney+ after being restored by Hollywood director Peter Jackson, the streaming service announced Tuesday. Jackson, who also made the award-winning 2021 docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back” for Disney+, has carried out a “meticulous restoration” of the film as well as “lovingly remastering the sound,” according to the statement. “One month before its release, The Beatles officially broke up. And so the people went to see ‘Let It Be’ with sadness in their hearts, thinking, ‘I’ll never see The Beatles together again. I will never have that joy again,’ and it very much darkened the perception of the film,” he said in the statement.
