CNN —An Israeli airstrike killed at least 28 people and wounded dozens more sheltering at a school in Deir al-Balah, central Gaza, on Thursday, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said. The attack on the Rafidah school injured at least 54 Palestinians, according to the Red Crescent. Thursday’s strike is the latest to hit a school in Gaza. Last month, an Israeli strike on a school compound near Gaza city, killed at least 22 people, mostly women and children, according to Palestinian officials. Israel confirmed it carried out the strike, saying it had targeted a Hamas command post and killed several fighters.

CNN —Nearly six months after Columbia University banned Khymani James, a Pro-Palestinian student activist, who said “Zionists don’t deserve to live,” the coalition that had apologized on his behalf rescinded its statement of regret – and advocated for armed resistance against Israel. “Last spring, in the midst of the encampments, Columbia University Apartheid Divest (CUAD) posted a statement framed as an apology on behalf of Khymani James,” CUAD posted Tuesday night on Instagram. “Where you’ve exhausted all peaceful means of resolution, violence is the only path forward.”Columbia, in a statement, said Wednesday that it decried any calls for acts of violence. “We aspire to be an open campus but cannot be open while we are uncertain of safety,” Columbia said in its statement. On the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks, Gaza’s north was hit with more Israeli strikes, with no end in sight to the war devastating the enclave. Israel’s objective of defeating Hamas still seems far from reach as its military offensives in Gaza continue to ramp up. Israel launched a new ground operation in northern Gaza on Sunday and encircled the Jabalya refugee camp, where it says it saw signs of Hamas regrouping. Earlier this year, Israel’s military said it had defeated Hamas in northern Gaza, only to announce new offensives there in May. The camp was targeted early on in Israel’s response to Hamas’ attacks one year ago and has been struck several times during the war.

The terror attack has helped push the Middle East to the brink of a wider regional war. One year after the massacre, the Middle East has only plunged deeper into violence and is on the brink of a broader war. Globally, the immediate concern is that oil supplies will diminish significantly should conflict spill over to the rest of the Middle East. Everyone but Biden can see this," wrote Andrew Exum, a former US deputy assistant secretary of defense for Middle East policy, in The Atlantic last week. The global economy on edgeWhen the conflict began a year ago, there were fears that wider conflict in the Middle East could impact the global economy.

Trump was addressing the future of Gaza on the first anniversary of the October 7 terrorist attacks, where Hamas militants killed roughly 1,200 people in Israel. Propelled by US incentives, Saudi Arabia and Israel seemed closer than ever to a historic normalization of relations. It was October 10, and Major General Itai Veruv of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) was leading the first international press access to see the devastation of Hamas’ attacks. Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is unwilling to be a partner in a deal that would resow Middle East relations. Nearly 42,000 Palestinians in Gaza have been killed, many by US bombs and bullets in Israel’s hands, authorities in Gaza say. New York CNN —CBS News executives said Monday that a heated morning show interview with acclaimed author Ta-Nehisi Coates, during which his new book was compared to “extremist” writings, did not meet the network’s editorial standards. CBS executives told staffers during a daily editorial meeting that the contentious “CBS Mornings” interview last week with Coates, led by co-anchor Tony Dokoupil, had been addressed with Dokoupil. The assessment pacified some employees who had objected to Dokoupil’s tone during the segment with Coates. During the September 30 interview, Dokoupil took issue with Coates’ framing in the book. The gripping interview — intense by the often cozy standards of morning television —has since been viewed many millions of times on streaming websites.

Some critics have felt Harris has largely abandoned the Muslim and Arab American community. He said he hopes the support from religious leaders will make conflicted Muslim voters feel more comfortable voting for Harris, despite some prominent Muslim voices’ intense opposition to her. “The momentum [for Harris] in the community is growing.”The letter is the latest effort in the push on behalf of the Harris campaign to reach out to those voters after she met with Muslim community leaders in Michigan on Friday. In the dark days after the Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel and the ensuing military assault on Gaza, some dared hope the carnage could, in some way, become a catalyst for peace. “Crises can create opportunities,” veteran Israeli peace negotiator Yossi Beilin told NBC News last year. The world had given up on the Israel-Palestinian question, he said, but the horror of Oct. 7 and its aftermath “changed everything,” provoking a worldwide cry that this should never happen again. “There’s definitely room for hope,” Omar Dajani, a former legal adviser to Palestinian negotiation teams, agreed. “So long as we bear in mind that hope and optimism are different things.”One year later, those glimmers of hope have been shredded.

CNN —Pope Francis has chosen 21 new cardinals in a move that once again shows his determination to reshape the group of churchmen who will elect his successor. Also among the new cardinals announced by the pope on Sunday are bishops from Indonesia, Algeria, Japan and the Ivory Coast. At the time of the pope’s announcement, there were 122 cardinals under 80 and able to vote in a future conclave. Church law technically limits the number of such cardinals to 120, but previous popes have also gone over that number. Cardinals are second only to the pope in the church hierarchy, hold senior positions in the Vatican and act as the pope’s main advisers.

At least 24 killed in Israeli air strike on Gaza mosque and school

Destroyed buildings lie in ruin in central Gaza, amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, near the Israel-Gaza border, as seen from Israel, on Jan. 13, 2024. At least 24 people were killed and 93 others wounded when Israeli airstrikes targeted a mosque and a school sheltering displaced people in the Gaza Strip early on Sunday morning, the Hamas-run Gaza government media office said. The strikes on the mosque and the school, near the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip, came as the war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas in the enclave approaches its first anniversary. Israel's subsequent military assault on Gaza has killed nearly 42,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza's health ministry. It has also displaced nearly all of the enclave's 2.3 million people, caused a hunger crisis and led to genocide allegations at the World Court that Israel denies.

A portrait of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah sits amid destruction in a area targeted overnight by Israeli airstrikes in Saksakiyeh on September 26, 2024. The potential successor to slain Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has been out of contact since Friday, a Lebanese security source said on Saturday, after an Israeli airstrike that is reported to have targeted him. The Lebanese security source and two other Lebanese security sources said that ongoing Israeli strikes on Beirut's southern suburb — known as Dahiyeh — since Friday have kept rescue workers from scouring the site of the attack. The loss of Nasrallah's rumored successor would be yet another blow to Hezbollah and its patron Iran. The Lebanese security official told Reuters that Saturday's strike on a Palestinian refugee camp in Tripoli killed a member of Hamas, his wife and two children.

Israel has been weighing options in its response to Iran's ballistic missile attack on Tuesday, which Iran had carried out in response to Israel's military action in Lebanon. Hashem Safieddine's fate was unclear and neither Israel nor Hezbollah have offered any comment. Israel says it targets military capabilities and takes steps to mitigate the risk of harm to civilians. The Israeli military said some 70 projectiles were launched from Lebanon into Israeli territory on Friday evening and were either intercepted or fell in open land. Israel sent ground forces into Lebanon this week after the Iranian missiles attacks.
