That future loomed like a long, dark tunnel ahead: middle school. AdvertisementMy memories of middle school colored my fears for my sonI remembered my own middle school years as both fun and fraught. In middle school, I jumped on an external validation treadmill that became very hard to get off, eventually losing touch with my own wants and needs. The author, middle, was worried when her son started middle school. The night before school started, I sat in the living room unboxing, unpackaging, organizing, and arranging.

Patrick T. Fallon | AFP | Getty ImagesAn appeals court Thursday allowed a rule restricting asylum at the southern border to temporarily stay in place. The government had gone quickly to the appeals court asking for the rule to be allowed to remain in use while the larger court battles surrounding its legality play out. The new asylum rule was put in place back in May. The government said the new asylum rule was an important tool to control migration. One of the groups, the American Civil Liberties Union, noted in a news release Thursday that the ruling didn't weigh the legality of the asylum rule and that they were confident they'd ultimately prevail.

“The Biden administration’s asylum ban is illegal and dangerous,” said Anne Peterson, a senior staff attorney at the Center for Gender and Refugee Studies. “The courts have repeatedly struck down these policies as unlawful. “The rule has significantly reduced irregular migration, and since its implementation on May 12 we have removed more than 85,000 individuals. Judge Lawrence J.C. VanDyke wrote that he agreed with their decision but objected because his two colleagues had been harsher when dealing with cases involving former President Donald J. Trump. In a five-page dissent, Judge VanDyke, a Trump appointee, wrote that the other judges did not give the former president’s administration the same deference when they were considering several challenges to his immigration policies.

CNN —Police arrested an 18-year-old mother Tuesday after she attempted to hire a hitman to kill her 3-year-old son, according to police. The individual who runs the website received a service request to put out a hit on the intended victim, Paez’s son, police say. Authorities tracked down Paez using an IP address and phone number obtained through the fake website, which led them to the residence of the grandmother of the 3-year-old. The phone number confirmed the original request and agreed to pay $3,000 for the job, police said. Paez thought by hiring a hitman to kill her son, she would be able to rekindle their relationship, the affidavit says she told police.

Argentines tighten wallets to fight spiraling inflation
  + stars: | 2023-07-13 | by ( ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +2 min
BUENOS AIRES, July 13 (Reuters) - Argentines are tightening their wallets to make end meets as the South American country battles inflation which could surpass 140% on an annual basis this year, hunting for the cheapest prices on basic goods to shield their income. Inflation in the 12 months through June hit 115.6%, official data showed on Thursday. While Argentines are on track this year to keep up their high steak consumption, higher prices are taking a bite out of their selections. Analysts forecast that annual inflation could close this year at 142.4% compared to 94.8% last year, according to a central bank poll, steadily cutting away at consumers' purchasing power in Latin America's third-largest economy. The country is seeking adjustments as rising inflation, a weakening peso and a historic drought hamper exports and financial reserves.

Arvin Temkar/Atlanta Journal-Constitution via APThe training center was approved by the City Council in September 2021 but required an additional vote for more funding. ‘The Mother’ Review: Are You My Sniper?
  + stars: | 2023-05-11 | by ( Lisa Kennedy | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
This arrangement has kept the Mother and child safe for 12 years when Agent Cruise reaches out with news that Zoe (Lucy Paez) has been found by the Mother’s former partners: Adrian Lovell (Joseph Fiennes) and Hector Alvarez (Gael García Bernal). Lovell is a nasty-smooth piece of work. As Alvarez, Bernal basks in some candlelit cruelty when the action shifts to Cuba. Lovell trained the Mother as a sniper in Afghanistan. Apart from some deadpan exchanges between the Mother and Zoe, Lopez plays the role fierce.
The Netflix movie, which begins streaming on Friday, features plenty of high speed car and motorbike chases, fight scenes and gruelling training for Lopez's character, simply called 'The Mother'. Paez: "I would say the relationship of a mother and a daughter and how she'd protect her child.”Lopez: “How she would do anything to protect her child. Caro: “Badass, because she (the title character) is and mothers are.”Hardwick: "It's a movie of heart ... It really is ‘The Mother’ for a reason, cause mommas bring a different thing to life." Lopez: “Whenever you work with somebody like (Paez) who's talented and young, you remember to enjoy and ... how exciting it is ...
WASHINGTON, May 9 (Reuters) - The United States on Tuesday imposed sanctions on a son of former Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the Treasury Department said. El Chapo, who was leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, is currently serving a life sentence in a U.S. prison. Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has denied the presence of fentanyl labs in the country, alleging it comes from China. Guzman Lopez's cousin, Saul Paez Lopez, was also sanctioned for his alleged role in coordinating drug shipments. Washington also sanctioned Mario Esteban Ogazon Sedano, saying he purchased precursor chemicals from Ludim Zamudio Lerma to operate drug labs.
QUITO, Dec 29 (Reuters) - Ecuador's $290 million debt to a subsidiary of Canada's New Stratus Energy (NSE.V) will be void once contracts for the operation of two oil production blocks expire on Dec. 31, the government and subsidiary said on Thursday. "The state owed the contractor, under unpaid tariffs, $290 million," the energy ministry said in a statement. Ecuador has paid Petrolia some $60 million in fees over the past two years, company manager Ramiro Paez told Reuters, acknowledging the remaining $290 million debt would be wiped when the contracts ended. The company has not yet presented its arbitration case because it must complete a mediation process first, he added. State oil company Petroecuador will on Jan. 1 take over operation of the blocks, which together produce about 14,000 barrels a day.
They're looking for lots of workers — and the current automotive workforce can leverage its skills. There are a variety of new opportunities available, industry experts say. That means workers with skills in construction, manufacturing, and engineering, especially those willing to be flexible, could see plenty of opportunities, experts say. But first, the industry needs factories to build those batteries — and workers to construct them. You're not going to necessarily take somebody that's working on an assembly line and now you need software production experts," McCarthy said.
