The sun felt hotter than usual in Houston this week, as millions of sweltering residents emerged from the rapid thrashing of Hurricane Beryl to face a prolonged power outage — the largest ever seen by the city’s utility, according to the state’s lieutenant governor. The outages from the storm affected as many as 2.7 million customers across the state, mostly in and around Houston. Despite a promise by the utility, CenterPoint Energy, to restore power to one million customers by the end of the day on Wednesday, large swaths of the nation’s fourth-biggest city remained without power. The scale of the outages raised questions about whether enough had been done to prepare the city, just 50 miles from the Gulf Coast, for the kinds of storms that climate scientists predict will arrive with greater frequency. “For a Category 1 hurricane to result in over a million customer outages in its immediate aftermath demonstrates that there is plenty of need for the resiliency hardening investments,” said Wei Due, an energy expert with PA Consulting and a former senior analyst and engineer for Con Edison.

If shoppers already go to Amazon's stores or other places with an Amazon locker, it's quite convenient, said Jeremy Bartlow, a partner and consumer expert at PA Consulting. There's another reason why Amazon would love for you to pick up your Prime Day deals instead of delivering them to your front door: their bottom line. AdvertisementEarlier this year, Amazon offered a discount at Amazon Fresh grocery stores if patrons used one of the supermarkets to return something they bought on, for example. Whole Foods and Fresh Prime customers can also get their groceries selected from the selves and pre-packed for pick-up for free. Do you work for Amazon, Whole Foods, or Amazon Fresh and have a story idea?

It also wants you to sign up (and pay for) Amazon Prime at $14.99 a month — and possibly a whole host of other Amazon subscriptions. (The Amazon Fire HD 10 tablet is 46% off this Prime Day, down from $139.99 to $74.99.) "We sell a lot of devices during our Prime Day events," CFO Brian Olsavsky said on an earnings call after Prime Day 2022. REUTERS/Joe Skipper/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 16 (Reuters) - Engineering consultant Jacobs Solutions Inc (J.N) is in advanced talks to merge its government consulting arm at a valuation of more than $4 billion with private equity-owned Amentum Services Inc, people familiar with the matter said on Thursday. Under the terms discussed, Amentum would merge with Jacobs' Critical Mission Solutions (CMS) business to create a new publicly traded company that would be majority-owned by Jacobs' shareholders, the sources said. Jacobs, Amentum, Lindsay Goldberg and American Securities did not immediately respond to requests for comment. The deal with Amentum would free up resources for Jacobs to focus on its people and places solutions division, which provides transportation and environmental consulting to government entities and private sector clients, and PA Consulting, a management consulting business advising across several sectors. Amentum provides technical and advisory services to government clients including the Air Force and NASA, as well as commercial clients such as ExxonMobil (XOM.N) and Caterpillar (CAT.N).

It is considered "green" if produced with renewable energy and "gray" if the process is fueled with carbon-emitting natural gas. "When we get to the Gulf, (offshore wind) will start becoming much more disconnected from the grid," said Cheryl Stahl, principal project manager at risk assessment firm DNV. In comments to BOEM on the planned Gulf sale earlier this year, those three companies noted the potential of offshore wind to produce green hydrogen in the region. "The Gulf of Mexico is uniquely situated to facilitate and benefit from green hydrogen production via offshore wind," Shell said in April, pointing to the region's existing port and pipeline infrastructure as well as new federal funding for green hydrogen development. The American Clean Power Association, a trade group that represents offshore wind and other renewable energy developers, also said in its comments to BOEM that green hydrogen would "increase market viability of offshore wind."

The auction began on Tuesday and ended Wednesday, the offshore wind industry's first chance to snag leases in waters off the U.S. West Coast. "Today’s lease sale is further proof that industry momentum -- including for floating offshore wind development -- is undeniable," U.S. Winners of the five leases were mainly divisions of European energy companies already developing projects in the U.S. offshore wind market. "The macroeconomic environment has hardened significantly over the last six to 12 months," said Alon Carmel, a partner at consultancy PA Consulting who advises offshore wind companies. About 100 megawatts of floating wind capacity is currently installed in the world compared with 50 gigawatts (GW) for conventional offshore wind.
