Just Stop OilThe laws were purpose-built to target protest groups like Just Stop Oil. ExxonMobil told CNN that they do not currently fund Policy Exchange or American Friends of Policy Exchange, but did not answer questions about past funding. Heading into the autumn, a considerable number of those in the bottom quintile appear to be running on borrowed time. Dollar Tree, which owns Family Dollar, reported similar consumer headwinds during its quarterly earnings this month. "What we noticed was an even tighter core consumer at the very last week of each of the months in Q2," he said. "While that's always a tighter week of the month for our core consumer, it was by far the weakest."

But two political scientists told Business Insider that Musk's desire to run the US government like a private business — an approach many private sector professionals have supported for decades — isn't as foolproof as the CEO might think. Former President Donald Trump said at a campaign rally Thursday that he would eliminate taxes on overtime pay if he wins a second term in November. "I’m also announcing that as part of our additional tax cuts, we will end all taxes on overtime," he said in Tucson, Arizona. The Trump campaign did not immediately respond to a request for details about the plan. The Harris campaign also pointed to a 2019 Trump administration overtime pay rule that replaced a more expansive proposal pushed by the Obama administration. The 1938 Fair Labor Standards Act created a 40-hour workweek and overtime pay standards, as well as the right to a minimum wage.

The First Matabele War, fought between 1893 and 1894, foretold the future. The brutal era of trench warfare the Maxim gun ushered in only became fully apparent in World War I. Like other unmanned vehicles that aim for a high level of autonomy, these Russian drones don’t rely on large language models or similar A.I. Hezbollah’s alleged use of explosive-laden drones has displaced at least 60,000 Israelis south of the Lebanon border. And in the attacks of Oct. 7, Hamas used quadcopter drones — which probably used some A.I.

Investors are ignoring two major risks to the market, according to Vahan Janjigian, chief investment officer at Greenwich Wealth Management. Geopolitical tensions and weak oil prices are the second risk, Janjigian said. He has been "surprised" that the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas conflict and weak oil prices haven't elicited a bigger reaction from the market. The International Energy Agency said in its recently monthly reports that global oil demand has been decelerating , adding that oil consumption in China — long the "engine of global oil demand growth" — contracted in April and May this year. In June, it added that Chinese oil demand contracted for a third consecutive month , driven by a slump in industrial activity.

How oil-rich Arkansas became a hotbed of lithium mining
  + stars: | 2024-09-13 | by ( Lisa Setyon | In | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
The future of lithium production in the U.S. is gaining momentum in Arkansas, as companies like ExxonMobil , Albemarle, and Standard Lithium make significant investments in the state. While most of the world's lithium still comes from countries like Australia, Chile and China, Arkansas could change that. Standard Lithium, which has operated in Arkansas since 2020, is also expanding its Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) facility in El Dorado, thanks to a $100 million investment from Koch Strategic Platforms. Still, companies like Albemarle and Standard Lithium told CNBC they remain optimistic about Arkansas' potential to become a key player in the global lithium market. "The United States has to step up," said Robert Mintak, CEO of Standard Lithium.

U.S. crude oil jumped more than 1% to trade above $68 per barrel on Thursday, after Hurricane Francine churned through the Gulf of Mexico, disrupting oil production before making landfall in Louisiana. Oil futures rose more than 2% in the previous session as the storm threatened supplies. "Hurricane Francine has likely disrupted about 1.5mn barrels of US oil production, which we estimate will reduce September production in the Gulf of Mexico by around 50,000bpd," Giovanni Staunovo, an analyst at UBS, told clients in a Thursday note. Staunovo said the recent slump may be due to traders losing confidence in OPEC's ability to maintain compliance with production cuts at lower price levels. UBS expects oil prices will continue to rise, at least the short term.

The federal government and many state governments are passing laws and regulations designed to reduce our use of fossil fuels and increase renewable energy production. Now let's talk about energy production. Big picture, America's production of oil, natural gas, and renewables is growing with natural gas growing most of all. In 1950, natural gas was about 18% of total US energy production. As for oil, US domestic crude oil production has more than doubled since 2000.

Oil prices were flat on Thursday as concerns about lower demand erased the gains from the previous session spurred by Hurricane's Francine's impact on output in the U.S., the world's biggest crude producer. But with the storm set to eventually dissipate after making landfall, the oil market's attention again turned to lower demand. U.S. oil stockpiles rose across the board last week as crude imports grew and exports dipped, the Energy Information Administration said on Wednesday. The data also showed gasoline demand fell to its lowest since May at the same time distillate fuel demand dropped, with refinery runs also declining. Earlier in the week, the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries cut its forecast for global oil demand growth in 2024 and also trimmed its expectation for next year, its second consecutive downward revision.

Geologic hydrogen — sometimes known as white, gold or natural hydrogen — refers to hydrogen gas that is found in its natural form beneath Earth's surface. Pete Johnson, CEO and co-founder of Koloma, told CNBC that geologic hydrogen is fundamentally an exploration and production business. A primary energy source, such as coal, oil, wind or solar, refers to a natural energy source that has not been altered or converted. It's within this context that momentum has been growing over the potential of geologic hydrogen. Ellis said that just a small percentage of geologic hydrogen recovery might well be enough to supply all the projected demand for 200 years.

And for Trump, flipping Pennsylvania — a state he narrowly won in 2016 but lost in 2020 — would give him a broader path to winning back the White House. Trump tried to bring fracking into focusIn 2019, when Harris was running for the 2020 Democratic presidential nomination, she voiced support for a ban on hydraulic fracturing — or fracking. And recognizing the political potency of the issue, Harris on Tuesday sought to distance herself from her past comments by pointing to her record as vice president. From 1992 to 2012, only Democratic presidential nominees carried the state. In the state's Real Clear Politics polling average, Harris and Trump are both currently tied at 47.6% support.
