President-elect Donald Trump has picked Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla., to be his national security adviser, according to four sources familiar with the decision. Since 2019, he has represented a congressional district in the House, where he's a member of the Armed Services, Foreign Affairs and Intelligence committees. Like many congressional Republicans, Waltz has also criticized U.S. aid to Ukraine in its war against Russia. The role of White House national security adviser doesn’t require Senate confirmation. Waltz joins Rep. Elise Stefanik of New York as the second House Republican Trump has tapped for posts in his new administration.

WASHINGTON — House Speaker Mike Johnson took a dig at Obamacare during an event in Pennsylvania on Monday, telling a crowd there will be “massive” health care changes in America if Donald Trump wins the election. “No Obamacare,” Johnson responded, rolling his eyes. And so health care is one of the sectors and we need this across the board,” Johnson said. Johnson, who has crisscrossed the country to campaign for GOP House candidates, spoke only in broad terms at his Monday event. “If you take government bureaucrats out of the health care equation and you have doctor-patient relationships, it’s better for everybody.

“Losing the workers would devastate our companies, our industry and our economy.”‘The math is just not there’There is evidence that foreign-born construction workers help keep the housing market in check. “Immigrant construction workers in Sun Belt metros like Raleigh, Nashville, Houston, and San Antonio have helped these cities sustain their housing cost advantage over coastal cities despite rapid growth in housing demand,” the authors wrote. Undocumented workers would likely flee ahead of any national deportation effort, Hetrick said, even though many have been in the U.S. for well over a decade. Past as prologueLast year, the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, enacted a series of restrictions and penalties to deter the employment of undocumented workers. Many immigrant workers hastily left the state even before the policies took effect, with social media videos showing some construction sites sitting empty.

Amanda Overstreet was identified as the victim through DNA testing, according to a Friday news release from the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The remains were discovered by someone who came to the home to pick up the freezer for free, the sheriff’s office said. There is no evidence Overstreet was ever reported missing, and the “circumstances surrounding her disappearance remain under investigation,” the sheriff’s office said. The sheriff’s office didn’t disclose whether a cause of death was identified. “We were all guessing who it was,” he said of the discovered remains.

Spokesperson Jillian Cowherd said the voter registration process is started at the DMV, but completed at the Virginia Elections Department. It’s also used to verify voter rolls. But user and data errors in the DHS system — such as confusing people who share the same name — have led to people being inaccurately flagged on voter rolls, Clapman said. She said Youngkin’s announcement of noncitizen voters “stokes election denial generally, undermining faith in election results. Last October, election officials under Youngkin removed nearly 3,400 legal Virginia voters from the rolls, after misclassifying probation violators as felons.

BALTIMORE AP —When Trea Ellinger left a Baltimore drug rehab facility last summer, he assured his anxious mother that everything was fine. His mother, Lori Ellinger, questions the autopsy’s findings and wants to know why paramedics decided to use an injectable sedative. “As long as he’s not lying face down, that would be great,” one of the medics says. Four minutes later, the medics discussed getting Ellinger repositioned, but they didn’t act immediately. Ellinger was unhandcuffed and placed on his back as medics began performing chest compressions, according to the report.

London CNN —When British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak announced on Wednesday that the United Kingdom would hold a general election on July 4, many observers wondered: why now? British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak delivers a speech calling for a general election, outside 10 Downing Street, in London on May 22. Their time in office didn’t begin formidably. In 2010, after 13 years of Labour rule, David Cameron won the general election but didn’t win a majority in parliament. Eventually, the Conservative Party had enough of the chaos and put Sunak in charge as a safe pair of hands.

For the second time as governor of South Dakota, Kristi Noem has been banished from the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Noem’s mention of the gang, he said, was the first time he had heard of it or its possible presence on the reservation. In 2018, as a Representative in the South Dakota Legislature, she proposed legislation that would allow federal authorities to arrest people on tribal lands for state crimes. Tony Mangan, a spokesperson for the South Dakota Attorney General’s office, said the Ghost Dancers are affiliated with a motorcycle gang called the Bandidos. Around the country, tribal nations adopted the practice, and in South Dakota it became part of one of America’s most infamous massacres.

CHICAGO (AP) — As temperatures hover below freezing in Chicago, dozens of asylum-seekers are staying in the lower level of a library until the bitter cold gripping much of the country lifts. But after that, Chicago’s plans for offering immediate shelter to the growing number of migrants arriving in the nation’s third-largest city remain murky. Last week, it was parked city buses. “The city’s favorite word for everything is ‘temporary,’” said Vianney Marzullo, a volunteer who has helped migrants staying at O’Hare International Airport. That is true both for the two countries at the national level, and for state-level engagement. California has a steady and long working relationship with China. Arnold Schwarzenegger, a Republican governor, started the formal relationship with China over climate cooperation a decade ago, Jaros said. State regulators also have banned the sale of most new gas-powered cars in California by 2035. Meanwhile, the California family of a Christian pastor who has been detained in China since 2006 said Newsom should take any possible opportunity to argue for his release.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — James Harden vowed he would never play for a franchise run by 76ers team president Daryl Morey. Coach Nick Nurse, in his first season after five years with Toronto, is preparing for games without Harden. Harden even declined in June 2022 his $47.4 million option, saying he wanted to give the 76ers flexibility to improve their roster and compete for a championship. He signed a deal worth slightly over $68 million, paying him about $33 million last season with a $35 million player option for this season. The player known as The Beard instead picked up his $35.6 million option with the 76ers for this season, with the desire to force a trade.

Ron DeSantis’ exclusive interview with NBC News’ Dasha Burns covered a wide range of topics, including two issues dogging DeSantis on the campaign trail: abortion and his state’s new Black history standards. And although he’s pledged to be a “pro-life president,” he’s broken with some others in the GOP field and has not embraced a federal ban on abortions. “I think the reality is that that basically means the states are going to have primary control over it,” DeSantis said. Asked if he would veto a national abortion ban, DeSantis said, “We will be a pro-life president, and we will support pro-life policies. DeSantis defended the standards, saying “it’s very clear that they’re showing that this was a grave injustice, and it contradicted the founding principles of our country.”“Those standards were not political at all.

That man was the military commandant of Balakliia, a key figure in Russia’s six-month occupation of the eastern Ukrainian town. Town residents knew the commandant only by his call sign of “Granit,” the Russian word for granite, as Reuters reported in an October investigation into Moscow’s withdrawal from the town. One of the documents listed Valery Sergeyevich Buslov as among the Russian officers present in Balakliia, stating his role was military commandant. He has served as the Kaliningrad garrison’s military commandant, responsible for maintaining discipline among troops and sailors stationed there, according to a 2019 military newspaper article. By May, the military commandant had arrived in Balakliia, according to Oleksandr, one of the two female residents and another local woman.
New York CNN —A federal judge on Wednesday denied a request by Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s office for a temporary restraining order to stop a House Judiciary Committee subpoena of former prosecutor Mark Pomerantz. District Judge Mary Kay Vyskocil said Pomerantz must appear for a deposition as the House panel investigates Bragg’s recent indictment of former President Donald Trump. Bragg’s office says it will appeal. During the hearing, an attorney for Bragg’s office argued – unsuccessfully – that Pomerantz ignored cautions from the DA before publishing the book, so the district attorney’s office should not be penalized. The clash between federal and state powers began in March when Jordan asked Bragg’s office for documents and communications after news organizations reported that Bragg’s office was moving closer to seeking to indict Trump.

Montana lawmakers on Friday approved a first-of-its-kind bill to ban TikTok across the state, setting the stage for future court battles that could determine the fate in the U.S. of the popular, Chinese-owned social media app. The Montana House voted 54-43 to send the bill to Gov. Greg Gianforte ’s desk. The governor’s office didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment on whether or when he might sign the bill.

CNN —Howard Schultz has declined Bernie Sanders’ request to testify before Congress. While Starbucks Workers United has sought better pay and benefits, the company has apparently put efforts into retaliating against workers who tried to unionize. About 100 Starbucks stores across the U.S staged a three-day strike in December, following a one-day strike in November, to protest unfair labor practices. One of the main reasons Starbucks workers organized is to hold billionaire executives, like Schultz, accountable for their actions,” Starbucks Workers United said in a statement to CNN. A total of 338 Starbucks stores have voted to unionize since 2021, 282 have been certified across 36 states and 56 didn’t get certified.
