Traders' confidence was reinforced earlier this week when Fed Governor Christopher Waller, a hawkish policymaker, flagged a possible rate cut in the months ahead. SOFR FUTURESBond investors also look to the Secured Overnight Financing Rate (SOFR) futures to gauge expectations of Fed rate moves. The June 2024 SOFR futures have priced at least one Fed cut, while the probability of two 25-basis-point rate reductions was at 76%. For instance, in a U.S. two-year OIS transaction, one party receives a fixed two-year rate in exchange for paying the fed funds rate daily over the next two years.

A woman walks past the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) logo inside its headquarters in Mumbai, India, April 6, 2023. A July 13-31 Reuters poll of 75 economists showed the central bank was expected to keep its repo rate unchanged at 6.50% at its Aug. 10 policy meeting. The rise in food prices, however, has been sharper than expected this year and is seen lasting longer. The MPC at its June policy meeting also reiterated its intent of nudging inflation towards its medium-term target of 4% and not just holding it below 6%. "It will also possibly emphasise a larger need to be watchful of the second-round effects of high food prices and inflation expectations."

LONDON, July 12 (Reuters Breakingviews) - The Bank of England’s silence has left traders in a tizzy. Market interest rates have spiked due to soaring inflation expectations, pushing up mortgage costs. That looks like an over-reaction but unless Governor Andrew Bailey says so, homeowners will pay the price. Now, traders believe rates will be at around 6.2% in a year’s time and stay above 5.8% for a further two years. That spike sent the average two-year fixed mortgage rate to 6.66% on Tuesday, the highest level since August 2008, according to Moneyfacts.

LONDON, June 20 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Since May 24, thousands of British people have had their homeowning dreams dashed by a sudden spike in mortgage rates. Unlike many other central banks, the BoE doesn’t provide its own forecasts of how consumer prices will evolve in coming years. The whiplash occurred because traders had to digest the inflation shock without any interest rate guidance from policymakers. Because most banks price home loans off those derivatives, it sent mortgage rates rocketing. The BoE announces its latest interest rate decision on June 22, with traders expecting a 25-basis-point hike, to 4.75%.

Despite hitting an 18-month low of 4.70% in April, analysts do not expect India's inflation to fall to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) 4% medium-term target in a sustainable manner for some time. India has raised rates by 250 basis points (bps) since May 2022, but surprised analysts in April by keeping them unchanged. India's hold on rates contrasts with recent central bank actions elsewhere. "Our goal is to achieve the inflation target of 4% and keeping inflation within the comfort band of 2-6% is not enough," Das said. Das said that the central bank would remain "nimble" with its liquidity operations amid spikes in overnight rates despite surplus liquidity in the banking system.

The current situation could not be further removed from the last time debt ceiling episodes really spooked markets in 2011 and 2013. The Fed is expected to raise rates again in May and could still even tighten again in June if policymakers think inflation and growth data warrant it. "Some people may be building some debt ceiling risks into their monetary policy expectations," said Benson Durham, head of global policy at Piper Sandler. "The debt ceiling and monetary policy are going to be more intertwined in the coming months." chartThe debt ceiling is the maximum amount the U.S. government can borrow to meet its financial obligations.
LONDON, March 20 (Reuters) - A market-based indicator of stress in the U.S. banking system jumped on Monday to its highest in three months, as turmoil engulfed regional lenders following the collapse of Silicon Valley Bank. The gap between the U.S. three-month forward rate agreement and the three-month overnight index swap rate, a funding stress indicator, rose to around 18 basis points in London trade from 23.7 bps on Thursday. The so-called FRA/OIS spread which is used to gauge U.S. banking sector stress jumped to 18.2 bps, from closer to 12 bps last week, its highest since Dec. 22. A U.S. official said on Sunday that the deposit outflows that left many regional banks reeling in the wake of SVB's failure had slowed and in some cases reversed, as investors tried to ascertain whether the crisis was contained. March 20 (Reuters) - Fears of a global banking crisis are continuing to swirl, with investors keeping a close eye on a dashboard of indicators that show how stress is rippling through markets and the banking system. Many of these are continuing to flash warnings, though they have not surpassed levels seen during the COVID-19-fueled market turbulence of 2020. But the spread, measuring the gap between the euro zone three-month forward rate agreement and the overnight index swap rate, is still relatively elevated at around -1 basis points in a sign of lingering concern about financial market stress. Cost of insuring European junk bondsThe cost of insuring exposure to European junk bonds rose to the highest since mid-November on Monday at over 516 basis points. This has risen over 130 basis points since March 7 as riskier assets have borne the brunt of bank turmoil on both sides of the Atlantic.

March 15 (Reuters) - A jump in the cost for Wall Street banks to insure bonds against default on Wednesday was another worrisome indicator of credit stress for investors amid the crisis at Credit Suisse and at U.S. regional banks. Swiss bank Credit Suisse (CSGN.S) fell to a record low on Wednesday. Five-year credit default swaps for the flagship Swiss bank hit a new record high. Credit default swaps on Credit Suisse also inverted on Wednesday with the two-year rising above the five-year, and both hit a new 52-week high, according to data from Ortex. Some analysts believe that the larger banks are resilient and are more worried about the smaller and mid-sized banks.
Banks can use eligible government securities on their books like Treasuries and agency mortgage backed-debt to guarantee the loans. By comparison, a one-year loan from a Federal Home Loan Bank, a government state enterprise that provides low-cost lending to regional banks, is around 5.4%, according to market participants. In essence, the bank lending program will allow the Fed to keep raising rates." U.S. banks had raised their holdings of government securities during periods of ultra-low interest rates to defend falling interest net margins. Major banks led by Goldman Sachs (GS.N) and Barclays Bank (BARC.L) have called for a pause from the Fed next week.

The Bank Term Funding Program (BTFP) will offer loans with maturities of up to a year to banks, savings associations, credit unions and other eligible depository institutions. Here are some key elements of the Fed's program:STRESS RELIEFThe Fed has raised rates from near zero a year ago to between 4.50-4.75% now to combat inflation that hit a 40-year high last year. The same collateral terms will also be available for loans drawn from the Fed's "discount window," its traditional lender-of-last-resort facility. Ordinarily, loan amounts were governed by the market value of the pledged collateral. In fact, the Fed loans are made with "recourse beyond the pledged collateral," which takes into account the fact that the collateral may be impaired.
