Aug 21 (Reuters) - Former England goalkeeper Ben Foster has retired again, the 40-year-old said on Monday just two months after signing a one-year contract extension with League Two (fourth-tier) side Wrexham. Foster played a key role in helping the Welsh team bet back in the English Football League, making 12 appearances during his time at the club, which is owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. He came out of retirement to sign a short-term deal with Wrexham in March before saving a stoppage-time penalty against Notts County the following month to put Wrexham within touching distance of automatic promotion from the National League. "Wrexham will always have a special place in my heart." Reporting by Pearl Josephine Nazare in Bengaluru; Our Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.

WREXHAM, Wales - APRIL 22, 2023: Jordan Davies of Wrexham celebrates with fans as Wrexham win the Vanarama National League and are promoted to the English Football League after victory against Boreham Wood. Wrexham, the Welsh soccer club owned by Hollywood A-listers Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, secured promotion back to the English Football League (EFL) system for the first time in 15 years. A 3-1 victory on Saturday over London-based Boreham Wood saw the club win the Vanarama National League title, powered by two second-half goals from talismanic striker Paul Mullin. The win meant Wrexham wrapped up the league title with one game to spare after a fierce challenge from Notts County. It will see the club ascend next season from the National League, the fifth tier of the English football pyramid, into the EFL League Two for the first time since its relegation in 2007/8.
On a night of drama, with Boreham Wood scoring in the opening minute, Wrexham won 3-1 and the A-list owners were in the thick of the celebrations -- hugging players and wiping away tears of joy. "The one thing running through my head over and over again is people said at the beginning 'Why Wrexham? "For us to be welcomed into their community, and to be welcomed into this experience, has been the honour of my life." Wrexham, relegated from League Two in 2008, are going back up with a record haul of points and as champions with a game to spare. Notts County pushed them hard and will be favourites to follow Wrexham into the fourth tier after the playoffs.

April 19 (Reuters) - Former Wales forward Hal Robson-Kanu has offered to come out of retirement and play for Wrexham, the fifth tier club owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, with his salary donated to charity. Wrexham are four points clear of Notts County at the top of the National League with two games remaining after beating Yeovil Town 3-0 on Tuesday. "I’ll come out of retirement and come and play for @Wrexham_afc next season. I’ll also give my salary to the charity of the fans choosing," Robson-Kanu wrote in reply to an Instagram post by Reynolds after the Yeovil match. CNN —Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership of Welsh soccer club Wrexham has already produced a Disney+ documentary and earned the pair the city’s top civic honor – the Freedom of Wrexham. And now Reynolds has released a catchy song to celebrate his co-chairman’s birthday, enlisting all his “mates in Wrexham” to teach the world how to pronounce McElhenney’s last name correctly. “Would be a real shame if this became a Wrexham Racecourse chant,” Reynolds added. McElhenney simply tweeted: “This is…I mean… I don’t…Wow.”Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought Wrexham in late 2020. Then, McElhenney retaliated by launching “The Ryan Reynolds Memorial Blimp,” complete with an unflattering picture of the Canadian actor.
CNN —Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds says he will “never be the same again” after watching Wrexham AFC take a huge step towards promotion in dramatic fashion on Monday. Wrexham has four games of the regular season remaining to secure automatic promotion to the Football League. Just the drama attached to all of it.”On his last-gasp penalty save, Foster added: “That adrenaline buzz there, that moment gives you goosebumps. The club had been languishing outside the top four divisions of English football, known as the Football League, for over a decade but now seems to be on an exciting path up the football pyramid. Wrexham is one of a number of Welsh clubs that play in the English football league system due to being founded before the creation of the Welsh football league.
