An Arizona produce company is recalling all sizes of its whole, fresh American cucumbers in 26 states and parts of Canada because they could be contaminated with salmonella, it said. Recalled cucumbers from SunFed were also sold in parts of Canada. "As soon as we learned of this issue, we immediately acted to protect consumers," SunFed President Craig Slate said in a statement. Cucumbers also were recalled earlier this year in South Florida, where at least 551 people were likely sickened by salmonella and 155 hospitalized. Many of the recalled cucumbers were linked to Bedner Growers Inc., and Thomas Produce Co., both of Palm Beach County, Florida, according to the FDA.

But the floodgates really opened last year when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at 31 years old. “It feels really dumb to feel hopeful.”About a third of cancer patients struggle with depression, anxiety and other psychiatric disorders, although these conditions often go undetected and undiagnosed. But this neglect comes at a significant cost, with mortality rates up to 39% higher among cancer patients with depression when compared to those without mental illness. In a 2023 study of 230,000 patients, 10% of people had depression or anxiety before their cancer diagnosis, and 22% were diagnosed afterward. Similarly, hormone-blocking drugs, which are commonly used for prostate and breast cancer, can contribute to fatigue and mood changes, while cancer surgeries can profoundly affect one’s body image and sense of self.

In a world where sentiment drives purchasing decisions, these differences in opinion could shape how much people end up spending this holiday season. "It's very hard being a millennial and having to worry about buying a house, affording groceries, rent, all that stuff. Meanwhile, Trump voter Armando Duarte, a 62-year-old retired utility worker from Fort Lee, New Jersey, told CNBC he's feeling a lot better about the holiday shopping season since Trump won. In GOP-won states, shipping volumes increased by 50.4% after the election, while Democrat-won states saw volumes decrease by an average of 11.2%. Only two blue states — Illinois and Minnesota — saw shipping volumes increase after the election, while all others saw rates fall.

“This exceeds the amount the State Health Plan spends on cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and chemotherapy medications,” the State Health Plan said in a March statement. The health plan’s board of trustees eliminated coverage of this class of medications for weight loss starting in April. “They know diets don’t work long-term for weight loss, yet they are denying coverage for a medication that has been effective,” Blanchard said. But patients typically need to stay on the medications to maintain their weight loss, meaning they face long-term costs. Besides making the medication more affordable, he said, it should encourage the use of weight loss drugs and treatment of obesity as a chronic disease instead of stigmatizing it as a moral failing.

The Kansas City Chiefs' most important catch happened after Sunday's win against the Carolina Panthers, when defensive lineman Tershawn Wharton saved a young fan who fell from the stands. The moment Wharton caught the child was captured on video. Wharton told The Pat McAfee Show that it was a "natural reaction" to catch the child. The video shows Wharton, 26, lift the child back up into the stands. He said he hopes to connect with the child and invite him to another Chiefs game.

CNN —After quite possibly saving a child’s life on Sunday, Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Tershawn Wharton has invited the young fan to a game. Wharton caught the child after he fell headfirst from the Bank of America Stadium stands following the Chiefs’ 30-27 win against the Carolina Panthers in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Sunday. The child loses his footing before falling headfirst from the stands, which are roughly 10 feet above the ground. It is not clear from the video whether a railing gave way, or whether the particular area that the young fan was leaning over was not covered by a fence. But I just had to kind of, like, push him into the stands a little bit to make sure he didn’t hit too hard,” he continued.

But if she had to pick between sweet potato and pumpkin — the two autumnal pies that have come to define the Thanksgiving season — the choice is a simple one: Sweet potato. But in many homes, particularly African American ones, sweet potato pie remains supreme. This abundance of sweet potatoes, both in pastry and other forms, led to sweet potato pie entering the soul food canon. Illustration by Leah Abucayan/CNNThe importance of sweet potato pie to African Americans has continued through generations. A few decades later, Georgia Gilmore sold sweet potato pies, and other food, to help fund the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

— As President-elect Donald Trump’s incoming administration solidifies its plan for mass deportations, local law enforcement agencies are preparing to ramp up a controversial program that allows them to partner with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. It authorizes ICE to delegate to state and local law enforcement officers the ability to perform certain functions of an immigration officer. According to ICE, as of May 2024, law enforcement agencies in 21 states participated in the program. Other critics have also said the 287(g) program merely serves as a political messaging tool for conservative sheriffs. Earlier this month, the Los Angeles City Council passed an ordinance that prohibits the use of city resources in immigration enforcement.

Barack Obama’s Big Lesson

It remains Barack Obama’s most underrated political skill: his appeal to working-class voters, including those who are white. Obama won most voters without a four-year college degree in his two presidential campaigns. Those majorities helped him win Florida, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin in both campaigns. He traveled to the University of Notre Dame as president and said he wanted to reduce the number of abortions. He supported civil unions rather than same-sex marriage when most voters felt similarly.

A wildfire in southwestern Massachusetts grew to 1,000 acres this week, the second fire in the region to reach that size this month. As droughts and heat intensify, the risk of wildfires like these becoming catastrophic is growing across the United States. But after generations of suppressing fire, many millions of acres of brush and tree fuels have built up, increasing the risk of large, dangerous wildfires. Prescribed-burn associations — neighbors helping neighbors burn — are addressing some of these issues by pooling community members’ resources, experience and time. In an era of greater wildfire risk driven by fuel accumulation and global warming, governments should be swiftly removing barriers to the use of prescribed fires on private land.
