An infant has died and 10 adults have been sickened amid a four-state listeria outbreak connected to ready-to-eat meat products, officials said. The outbreak has been tied to ready-to-eat meat produced by Yu Shang Food, Inc. of Spartanburg, South Carolina, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an update Friday. The infant who died was a twin whose sibling also died but whose death could not be linked to listeria. Of the eight people sickened, seven shopped at markets where Yu Shang Food products are sold, and two said they recalled eating Yu Shang Food chicken, the CDC update said. “This suggests that people in this outbreak got sick from the same food,” the CDC said in its update.

Opinion | Flattery as Trump Management Strategy

One of the things that has been clear with Donald Trump’s win this time is how different it is: no shock wave jolting society. This is, according to polling, one of the presidential election outcomes most widely accepted as legitimate of the past 25 years. On the public level, we’re back in business in some way, back to an earlier pre-Trump era of normal relations, strategic silence, public deference and an antiseptic corporate friendliness — a bit of flattery, at times, for Mr. Trump. Tim Cook, the Apple C.E.O., wrote on X on Nov. 6: “Congratulations President Trump on your victory! “We didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues and we told him so,” Joe Scarborough said.

Here are eight health claims — with little or no scientific evidence to back them up — that Oz made over the years. Green coffee extract, the ‘magic weight loss cure’In 2014, Oz went to Washington to seek help fighting internet marketers who were using his name and image to sell weight loss products. Senators provided several examples from Oz’s own show, but much of the hearing focused on his claims about green coffee bean extract. “Police officers must respect people’s civil and constitutional rights and treat people with dignity,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke of the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division in a statement on the report. “After an extensive review, we found that police officers in Trenton routinely failed to respect the Fourth Amendment rights of those who call Trenton home. Also, the report noted, since 2021, accusations of officer misconduct has cost the city more than $7 million to resolve lawsuits. “When police stop someone in Trenton, our investigation found that all too often they violated the constitutional rights of those they stopped, sometimes with tragic consequences. “Even prior to the USDOJ review, the City and the [Trenton Police Department] had already begun to change policies and practices that prioritize community safety, accountability, and respect for civil liberties.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Atlantic City's casinos saw their operating profits decline by nearly 14% in the third quarter of this year, figures released Friday by New Jersey gambling regulators show. The state Division of Gaming Enforcement issued statistics showing that the nine casinos had a collective gross operating profit of $236.5 million in the third quarter. “Consumer demand may have been an issue for Atlantic City’s casino operators in summer 2024,” said Jane Bokunewicz, director of the Lloyd Levenson Institute at Stockton University, which studies the Atlantic City gambling industry. Revenue from things other than gambling also underperformed in the third quarter at $511.6 million, down 5% from a year earlier. An aerial view of Phillips 66 oil refinery is seen in Linden, New Jersey, United States on March 8, 2022. Oil prices rose on Friday after Russia said it had fired a ballistic missile at Ukraine and warned of a broadening conflict, raising the prospect of tightening crude supplies. Russia is among the world's top crude oil producing countries, even with output declines following import bans tied to its invasion of Ukraine and supply curbs by producer group OPEC+. Russia this month said it produced about 9 million barrels of oil a day. Ukraine has used drones to target Russian oil infrastructure, including in June, when it used long-range attack drones to strike four Russian refineries.

Most Americans are concerned about what may happen to Social Security when its retirement trust fund crosses a projected 2033 depletion date, according to a new Bankrate survey. Nearly three-quarters, 73%, of non-retired adults and 71% retired adults say they worry they won’t receive their benefits if the trust fund runs out. Social Security’s actuaries project the fund the program relies on to pay retirement benefits will be depleted in 2033. Retirees can claim Social Security retirement benefits as early as age 62, though they take a permanent lifetime reduction. Police officers in Trenton, N.J., systematically violate the constitutional rights of the city’s citizens, conduct illegal searches and needlessly escalate peaceful interactions into violence, the U.S. Department of Justice found in a report published Thursday. In one event described in the 45-page report, police officers encountered an unarmed man as he ran shirtless around a hospital parking lot. The man cried, “I can’t breathe,” and, “I’m going to die.” After more than four minutes, he grew still, the report said. The man was not identified, but the details match the case of Stephen Dolceamore, 29, of Springfield, Pa., which was reported by NJ Advance Media. New York City declared a drought warning on Monday, its first in 22 years, as the Northeast deals with severe dry conditions and brush fires during a historically dry autumn. The last drought warning in New York City was issued in 2002. Under a warning city agencies adopt drought protocols and voluntary water conservation is encouraged for New Yorkers. New York City's water supply needs almost 8 inches of rain to reach normal levels, officials said. Kathy Hochul also declared a statewide drought watch on Monday citing “a historic shortage of rainfall” and elevated 15 counties in the Mid-Hudson region and New York City, to a drought warning.

Trump has said that undocumented immigrants share the blame for America’s once-in-a-generation home affordability crisis, but the president-elect’s deportation plans may backfire, driving up the cost of homebuying even further. There is a need for more construction workers, as well: There were 282,000 construction jobs open as of September, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. “Immigrant labor is really important for our ability to continue to build homes affordably,” said Tobin. More than one-third of construction workers in the labor force are foreign-born, according to the US Census Bureau’s 2023 American Community Survey. In some states, that share is much higher: In California, New Jersey and Texas, more than half of construction workers are immigrants.

But the decline in support for Ms. Harris in some of the country’s most liberal areas is particularly notable.
