The use of what Vladimir Putin said was a ballistic missile with multiple warheads in offensive combat is a clear departure from decades of the Cold War doctrine of deterrence. The India-born British author’s novel was banned by India in 1988 after some Muslims viewed it as blasphemous. The Delhi High Court was hearing a 2019 case challenging the import ban of the book in India. Khan’s plea said he approached the court after being told at bookstores that the novel could not be sold or imported in India and then when he searched, he could not find the official import ban order on government websites. Even in court the government has been unable to produce the order, he said.

FARUKH NAGAR, India — The words “Indian Fireworks” are spelled out faintly in Hindi on the disused storefront. The small factory and dozens of others in this town a couple of miles from India’s capital, New Delhi, once produced a dizzying array of fireworks. Now there are neither fireworks nor any shoppers at the abandoned workshops of Farukh Nagar, which had produced the pyrotechnics since before the country’s independence from British colonial rule in 1947. The town stands as a grim reminder of the government’s crackdown on pollution and what it deems dangerous fireworks. “No place celebrated Diwali like we did.”

OTTAWA, Ontario — A Canadian official alleged Tuesday that Indian Home Minister Amit Shah ordered a campaign of violence, intimidation and intelligence-gathering targeting Sikh separatists inside Canada. Indian government officials have repeatedly denied that Canada has provided evidence and have called the allegations absurd. Nathalie Drouin, Trudeau’s national security adviser, told the committee Tuesday that Canada has evidence the Indian government first gathered information on Indian nationals and Canadian citizens in Canada through diplomatic channels and proxies. Drouin said a meeting was held with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s national security adviser, Ajit Doval, in Singapore two days earlier. Four Indian nationals living in Canada were charged with Niijar’s murder and are awaiting trial.

CNN —Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla made a surprise pitstop in India as they returned from their royal tour to Australia and Samoa. “Their Majesties had a short private stopover in India to help break the long journey back from Samoa,” a Buckingham Palace spokesperson said on Wednesday. Then-Prince Charles and Camilla during a visit to India on November 9, 2017 in New Delhi. The King is expected to return to regular overseas trips in 2025, according to Britain’s PA Media news agency. Charles will carry out trips in the spring and autumn, on the regular foreign royal tour schedule, so long as doctors sign off on the journeys.
