Harvey Weinstein’s lawyers filed a legal claim Tuesday against New York City, alleging the disgraced Hollywood mogul is receiving poor medical care and living in an unhygienic environment at the Rikers Island jail complex. He was hospitalized in April and July, and he had emergency heart surgery in September, according to a representative. The New York City mayor’s office, the city’s Department of Correction and the city’s public hospital system did not immediately respond to requests for comment. “The treatment, or lack thereof, that Mr. Weinstein is receiving on Rikers Island does not only amount to medical negligence, it amounts to cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the Eighth Amendment,” Ansari added in part. Weinstein, 72, was placed into city custody earlier this year after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction in a 4-3 decision.

A 73-year-old man fell to his death Saturday morning after climbing out of the sixth floor window of his Manhattan home to escape a group of home invaders, police said over the weekend. One of the suspects entered the apartment in Washington Heights around 4:40 a.m. by climbing through a window, according to investigators. It was during the chaos of the robbery that the 73-year-old climbed out of the window in an apparent attempt to escape. He said he saw his friend climb out of the window and fall after getting out onto a small ledge to reach another window, and getting stopped by an air conditioner. The man was rushed to the hospital after the fall, but he later succumbed to his injuries and died.

Jordan Neely died from the “combined effects” of a number of a factors, not a chokehold, a forensic pathologist hired by Daniel Penny’s attorneys testified Thursday. Penny is charged with manslaughter and criminally negligent homicide in the chokehold death of Neely on a New York City subway train in May 2023. Penny, 26, who was a passenger on the train, put Neely in a chokehold and took him to the ground. Chundru said he did not believe that Neely died of a chokehold or that Penny had applied consistent and sufficient pressure to render him unconscious. I went from NYC to the Pennsylvania suburbs because I work remotely and wanted a better apartment. I love not having to rely on public transportation anymore, but driving at night can get scary. New York City Mayor Eric Adams asked a judge on Monday to set an earlier trial date in his federal corruption case next year, arguing the current date would impede Adams’ participation in his mayoral reelection campaign, according to court documents. In a letter to the court, Adams’ lawyer, Alex Spiro, requested the trial to begin weeks earlier on April 1, rather than later that month. He added that the prosecution will “cast a cloud” over Adams’ campaign until it’s resolved by a New York jury at trial. Adams pledged to fight the charges and stay on as mayor. “This was a multiyear scheme to buy favor with a single New York City politician on the rise,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams said at a news conference in September.
