UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell speaks in the early hours at the conclusion of the UNFCCC COP29 Climate Conference on November 24, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ambitious climate action often requires ambitious financing — be it a clean energy transition project or helping developing countries mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Nearly 50,000 people from 200 countries — including, for the first time, the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan — were in Azerbaijan for this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference, with the goal of reaching a critical deal on climate finance. Some of the highest human costs will be paid by smaller nations that are disproportionately affected by climate change, including Pacific Island nations whose existence is threatened by rising seas. But with COP29 weighed down by geopolitics and domestic turmoil, some were reluctant to attend at all.

Many families have been effectively cutting a second rent check to send their kids to day care, according to new data from the Department of Labor. On average, families spent anywhere from $6,552 to as much as $15,600 on full-day care per child in 2022, the latest year with available data. While incomes also range widely throughout the country, households typically funnel between about 9% and 16% of their annual income on day care per child. But while child care costs help explain Americans’ economic dissatisfaction, an NBC News analysis of the Labor Department and election result data also hints at the limits of the issue politically. The most forbidding child care markets in 2022 voted two years later for Trump by higher margins than the nation overall, but so did many of the areas where child care was more affordable.

One of the things that has been clear with Donald Trump’s win this time is how different it is: no shock wave jolting society. This is, according to polling, one of the presidential election outcomes most widely accepted as legitimate of the past 25 years. On the public level, we’re back in business in some way, back to an earlier pre-Trump era of normal relations, strategic silence, public deference and an antiseptic corporate friendliness — a bit of flattery, at times, for Mr. Trump. Tim Cook, the Apple C.E.O., wrote on X on Nov. 6: “Congratulations President Trump on your victory! “We didn’t see eye-to-eye on a lot of issues and we told him so,” Joe Scarborough said.

Fossil fuels still dominate the global energy mix at 81.5% in 2023, according to the Energy Institute. "It just goes to show how difficult it is to change the energy mix. It's because it takes time," said Lorenzo Simonelli, chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes, a global energy technology company. Takayuki Ueda, the representative director president and CEO of INPEX, a Japanese oil company, reiterated technology's role in the energy transition. Energy companies have been leaning on gas as a "reliable dispatch of power" to meet demand, said Maví Zingoni, CEO of Power at GE Vernova, an energy equipment manufacturing and services company.

The vast networks of data cables that crisscross our world's oceans are crucial for almost every aspect of modern life. Related Video Ukraine's sea drones vs. Russia's Black Sea FleetDespite their importance, events this week have highlighted just how vulnerable the West's internet subsea cables are to attacks from hostile powers. Unlike Russia, whose internet cables mostly run overland, the cables Western countries rely on are deep under the sea — and it's an asymmetrical vulnerability Russia is signaling it could exploit. The president-elect voiced support for imposing the death penalty on convicted human traffickers and drug dealers, while also saying he would seek to have prosecutors pursue the death penalty for migrants who kill American citizens or anyone who kills a law enforcement officer. It also wants the federal death penalty broadened to include people convicted of sexually abusing children, an application found by the US Supreme Court to be unconstitutional. “We saw what he’s capable of,” Abraham Bonowitz, executive director of the abolitionist Death Penalty Action, said of Trump. The organization does not take a position for or against the death penalty but has been critical of its administration. But many Syracuse residents feel that a potential threat to their health is being ignored. “This is morally outrageous.”City officials say that more than 14,000 homes receive water from lead pipes, which comprises about a quarter of residences citywide. In Syracuse, officials say there is no lead in the lake that provides drinking water to residents. That’s faster than EPA guidelines that call for lead pipes to be replaced within a decade. Activists hope Syracuse officials will learn lessons from the Flint water crisis, during which almost 30,000 children drank and bathed in lead-laced water before the EPA stepped in.
