It’s a message ringing clear at the Tokyo Mobility Show, which will run through Nov. 5 at Tokyo Big Sight hall and where battery-powered electric vehicles are the star at practically every booth. Toyota Motor Corp.’s lean angular Lexus concept, set to go on sale in 2026, is an electric vehicle running on lithium-ion batteries. That is partly because of Toyota’s past success in hybrids, exemplified in the Prius, which have a gasoline engine in addition to an electric motor. In China, a third of vehicles sold are EVs. Nissan, an early EV maker among the Japanese with its Leaf going on sale in 2010, is showcasing four EV concept cars.

☆ Toyota, Daimler in deal to combine Japan truck operations

Daimler Truck Holding and Toyota Motor Corp said on Tuesday they had entered a non-binding agreement to combine the businesses of their truck units in Japan. Under the memorandum of understanding (MOU), the businesses of Daimler-owned Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corp and Toyota subsidiary Hino Motors Ltd would be combined under a holding company, they said in a statement. Daimler Truck and Toyota will invest in the company equally and cooperate on the development of hydrogen and other technologies in areas such as connectivity and autonomous driving, the statement said. Last year, a committee tasked with investigating an emissions scandal at Hino, which became a Toyota subsidiary in 2001, found that the truck and bus maker had falsified emissions data going back to 2003. The heads of the four companies will hold a joint news conference in Tokyo at 4:30 p.m. (0730 GMT).

Industries such as autos, steel and textiles weighed on overall manufacturers’ sentiment, while communications, transport and utilities led non-manufacturers. “The prices of products are not keeping pace with surging raw materials costs” as many subcontractors in the supply chain could not pass on input costs to their clients, one manager at a chemicals maker said. “There are concerns about worsening profits due to import costs boosted by a weak yen on top of rising raw materials and energy costs,” said a manager of a food-processing firm. The BOJ’s last survey on Oct. 3 showed big manufacturers’ mood had worsened in July-September for a third straight quarter as high material costs dimmed recovery prospects for the fragile economy.
