CNN —Qatar is suspending its role as a mediator in talks between Israel and Hamas after concluding that the two sides are no longer negotiating in good faith, two sources familiar with the situation tell CNN. Qatar, which has long hosted Hamas’ political office in Doha, has alongside Egypt served as an intermediary for the two sides, which do not officially maintain direct contact. CNN —When Israeli airstrikes began raining down on southern Lebanon, Kamel Ahmad Jawad’s first instinct wasn’t to seek safety or return to the US. On October 1, Jawad, a 56-year-old American citizen, father of four and cherished figure in the Dearborn, Michigan, community, was killed by an Israeli airstrike, his family says. CNN has reached out to the Israeli military, which said they could not comment without being given the exact coordinates and time of the strike that killed Jawad. But his American citizenship, his daughter says, does not make his life any more valuable than the lives of the thousands of Palestinian and Lebanese civilians killed by Israeli airstrikes. CNN —More than 60 people have been injured, several of them critically, in a drone attack in north-central Israel, according to first responders. Hezbollah said it had targeted the Golani Brigade, an infantry unit of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) that has been deployed in southern Lebanon. The drone attack on Sunday comes two days after another attack in which the IDF said two drones were launched from Lebanon. The Emek Medical Center in northern Israel said it was treating four injured people. Beilinson Hospital said it was treating a further three and Bnei Zion Medical Center in Haifa also said it was treating three.

Japan's inflation-adjusted wages fell in August after two months of increases during the summer bonus season, while household spending also declined, data showed on Tuesday, knocking chances of the central bank raising interest rates any time soon. Real wages in the world's fourth-largest economy fell 0.6% in August from the same month a year earlier, according to the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. Separate data showed household spending declining 1.9% from the year-earlier in August, potentially raising doubts about the strength of private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's economy. The fall, however, was smaller than the market estimate for a 2.6% drop based on a Reuters poll, and on a seasonally adjusted basis, spending rose 2.0% from the previous month, marking the fastest pace of increase in a year. Those payments rose 2.7% in August versus a revised 6.6% in July and 7.8% in June.

CNN —Amid an outbreak of Marburg virus in Rwanda, travelers coming into the United States who have been in Rwanda in the previous 21 days will be screened starting next week, the US Department of Health and Human Services announced Monday. There are no confirmed cases of Marburg virus disease – a rare but deadly hemorrhagic disease similar to Ebola – outside Rwanda, and officials have said that the current risk to the US is low. The CDC is also issuing a Level 3 Travel Health Notice, recommending that people reconsider nonessential travel to Rwanda, and sending automated texts to air travelers arriving from Rwanda to share information and instructions. As of Monday, there have been 56 confirmed cases of Marburg in Rwanda, with 36 people in isolation and treatment, and 12 deaths, according to the Ministry of Health. The CDC and the World Health Organization have deployed teams of experts to Rwanda to provide guidance and assistance to public health workers there.
