Both men admire Javier Milei, the Argentine leader elected on a pledge to slash the state. About a year ago, standing in front of a whiteboard with a gleam in his eye, Javier Milei started pulling apart Argentina's government. Argentinians have taken to the streets to protest against Javier Milei's economic policies since his election.

AdvertisementElon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy, co-heads of DOGE, are working out how to cut the federal government. Milei closed nine ministries, firing thousands of officials, and cut spending by an estimated 31%. Argentina's president says Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy should all go "all the way" in cutting US federal spending. Both Musk and Ramaswamy have repeatedly praised Milei and taken inspiration from him for their Department of Government Efficiency. While Milei has achieved most of his sweeping cuts via executive decree, US spending cuts would likely involve working with Congress, where Republicans will hold just a slim majority.

Mauro Pimentel/AFP/Getty ImagesThe moment was a fluke, the type of logistical error that’s almost inevitable at gatherings of almost two dozen world leaders. Yet it was difficult to ignore the impression it left: that Biden is disappearing from view as the world turns its attention to his successor. What members of Biden’s team have been willing to acknowledge is how little they actually know about what Trump and his team may be planning. In Lima and Rio de Janiero, Biden fielded no questions from the press and his aides spoke only off-camera. Reporters had opportunities to ask Biden questions at the G20 summit in Rome in 2021, in Bali in 2022, and in Vietnam in 2023, following the summit’s conclusion in India the prior day.

It was just one example of Trump casting a long shadow over a pair of world leader summits taking place in South America this week. Yet to many involved in the discussions, the episode suggested the contention that colored world leader summits during Trump’s first presidency may be poised to return. “You can already see the Trump effect taking hold,” one Western diplomat said as the summit was getting underway. “Trump will only cause more divisions, and more divisions mean less leverage and less influence,” the official went on. “President Biden is that president, he will be handing off power in January, and it will be up to a new administration to decide what to do with it.”

CNN —From the moment the US election results rolled in, climate leaders knew Donald Trump would be a blow to the COP29 talks in Baku. Amid the chaos, prominent global climate leaders on Friday issued an open letter calling for a “fundamental overhaul” of the entire UN climate process. CNN —Argentina was the only country to vote against a United Nations resolution promoting the end of all forms of online violence against women and girls. During Thursday’s UN General Assembly session, the South American nation argued that the resolution contained ambiguous terms such as “hate speech,” “misinformation,” and “disinformation” that could be used “abusively” to restrict freedom of expression. A total of 170 nations voted in favor, while 13 others abstained, including Iran, Russia, Nicaragua, and North Korea. Milei, who ran on a libertarian platform, has rolled out drastic social and economic measures in Argentina since taking office. During Milei’s presidential campaign, he and his party were accused of making offensive remarks against LGBTQ communities which were deemed hate speech by multiple groups, including Argentina’s National Observatory of LGBTQ Hate Crimes.

But some people still seem surprised to see Trump nominate Pete Hegseth for defense secretary. It's a reminder that while Twitter — and Elon Musk — is influencing Trump, he's also a very, very big TV guy. Here's one clue: Trump has just nominated a Fox News host, Pete Hegseth, to be his secretary of defense. Mr. Musk has also attended at least one national security meeting with Mr. Trump alongside the likes of Stephen Miller, a top aide, and Donald Trump Jr., according to a person briefed on the meeting. But for now, both things can be true: Donald Trump has both Twitter and TV on his mind — even if he's actually watching only one of them.

In President-elect Trump, these ascendant insurgents across the pond see a key ally, someone who shares their mix of authoritarianism, populism and extreme hostility to immigration. “We have big plans for the future!” posted Hungary’s Prime Minister Vikor Orbán, an influential Trump friend and ally, calling it “a much needed victory for the World!”Orban visited Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida earlier this year. Several U.S.-listed funds tracking global stocks pulled back in Wednesday's session as investors considered Donald Trump's victory harmful to international equities. "While the investing landscape remains favorable in the U.S., international markets are very exposed to tariff policy, " said Yung-Yu Ma, chief investment officer at BMO Wealth Management. These moves reflect the divergence between U.S. and international markets as investors around the globe take in America's election results. Buenos Aires Reuters —Argentina’s President Javier Milei on Wednesday replaced Foreign Affairs Minister Diana Mondino after she voted in favor of lifting the US embargo against Cuba at the United Nations. Earlier on Wednesday, the UN General Assembly overwhelmingly called on the US to end its decades-long sanctions regime on Cuba, in a non-binding resolution opposed only by the US and Israel. Milei was having lunch when he received a call from Werthein inquiring about Argentina’s vote in favor of lifting the embargo on Communist-ruled Cuba, angering the right-wing leader, local news outlet TN reported. Earlier this year, Argentina’s state energy company YPF said it would not provide fuel to Cuban airline Cubana, prompting the state-run carrier to shut down a route run between Havana and Buenos Aires. Cuba’s foreign ministry at the time said Argentine officials cited the US embargo in defending the move.

Argentina’s poverty rate soared to almost 53% in the first half of the year, official data released on Thursday showed, the first hard evidence of the painful impact of libertarian President Javier Milei’s tough austerity measures. The data underscores how Milei’s spending cuts, aimed at overturning a deep fiscal deficit, have caused major short-term pain. The country is in a deep recession and inflation remains in triple digits, though there are signs things are improving. ‘Any level of poverty is horrendous’Agustin Salvia, director of the UCA’s Observatory, said that there was a significant impact at the start of the year from Milei’s policies. “If you look at the whole story, it shows a deterioration in the first quarter.

Struggling to feed her family after losing her job as a cleaner earlier this year, 56-year-old Norma Villarreal went to church Wednesday in the hardscrabble outskirts of Buenos Aires and waited in the pre-dawn darkness for over an hour to petition St. Cayetano, the patron saint of bread and work. Throughout decades of political change in Argentina, the annual Aug. 7 pilgrimage to St. Cayetano Sanctuary has served as a potent, and grim, reminder that in Argentina, economic despair remains a constant. But this year might be unique in one thing: The desperation over rising joblessness that drives Argentines to call on St. Cayetano has been matched by rage at the painful austerity program of libertarian President Javier Milei. While Milei has prioritized combating the country’s dizzying inflation rate — which fell in June to 4.2% month on month, the lowest since January 2022. Unemployment has become a growing concern as Milei’s government freezes public works projects and shutters ministries in his campaign to cut down the state.

Interest in emerging markets has been growing and investors are now looking out for sectors and stocks best placed to benefit. "Emerging markets are too important to ignore," says Malcolm Dorson, a senior portfolio manager at the U.S.-headquartered Mirae Asset, which has around $600 billion in assets under management. "Emerging markets have a multi-decade story with significant opportunities. More than 4 billion people live across emerging markets, Dorson noted, adding that each country will have "significant domestic consumption stories [and] long-term opportunities." One of the simplest routes to investing in emerging markets is through exchange-traded funds.

President Javier Milei of Argentina is a Catholic who leads Pope Francis’s native country. He also regularly studies the Torah, attends Shabbat dinner and has said that perhaps his most important adviser is his rabbi. Over the past several years, Mr. Milei has taken an intense and, among most world leaders, unusual interest in Judaism. Mr. Milei has pledged to move Argentina’s embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. And he has appointed his personal rabbi, Shimon Axel Wahnish, as Argentina’s ambassador to Israel.

CNN —It was an attack that sent shockwaves through a country long considered a pioneer in LGBTQ rights. Local LGBTQ rights advocates condemned the attack as a hate crime and lesbicide, saying the women were targeted because of their sexual identity. After taking office in December, Milei took steps that critics say weakened protections for LGBTQ groups. The recent attacks have galvanized activists to fight for new policies and actions that would further protect LGBTQ rights. He also said that to reduce attacks on LGBTQ communities, their voices and demands should be amplified in more societal sectors.

Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni receives Pope Francis as he arrives at the G7 Leaders Summit on day two of the 50th G7 summit at Borgo Egnazia on June 14, 2024 in Fasano, Italy. Pope Francis made an historic appearance at the Group of Seven summit on Friday to speak about the pros and cons of artificial intelligence, while G7 leaders also pledged to tackle what they said were harmful business practices by China. Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, the summit host, invited the pope and other heads of state and government, including the prime minister of India and the king of Jordan, in an effort to show the G7 was not an aloof, exclusive club. "We will never accept the narrative that wants the 'West against the rest'," Meloni told the meeting on Friday. The G7 also warned of action against Chinese financial institutions that helped Russia obtain weapons for its war against Ukraine.
