THE WOLVES OF ETERNITY, by Karl Ove Knausgaard. As the late Milan Kundera put it: “A novel does not assert anything; a novel searches and poses questions.” But in our manic and precarious times, fiction that conveys no sense of a world in upheaval can feel partial. With “The Wolves of Eternity,” the Norwegian distance runner Karl Ove Knausgaard brings us his second massive speculative novel in three years. Like its predecessor, “The Morning Star” (2020), the new novel comprises multiple narratives filtered through various characters. The first half of the novel, a section titled “Syvert,” is the anchor narrative.

London CNN —A graffiti wall in London’s bustling street art hub of Brick Lane has become an unlikely canvas for protest messages against China’s authoritarian rule, after it was whitewashed and painted over with propaganda slogans promoting Chinese Communist Party ideology. On Chinese social media, some supporters argued the young Chinese artists were exercising freedom of expression and applauded them for “exporting” Chinese culture and values. By Sunday, the slogans had been overlaid with a flurry of new graffiti that was deeply critical of both Xi and the Chinese Communist Party. A grafitti wall in Brick Lane was whitewashed and painted over with red slogans promoting China's "core socialist values." There’s no one leader or anything, but everybody’s expressing their dissenting views against the Chinese Communist Party,” he said.

“Milan Kundera, a Czech-French author who is among the world’s most translated authors, died on July 11, 2023 in his Paris apartment,” the library, a state-funded research organization, said in a statement. The author of “The Unbearable Lightness of Being,” Kundera was known for his witty, tragicomic tales, which were often intertwined with deep philosophical debates and satirical portrayals of life under communist oppression. Exile in ParisHe spent the rest of his life in exile in Paris, becoming a French citizen in 1981. While his Czech citizenship was restored in 2019, he was by then a French author whose home was in France. Kundera, having spent more than two decades living in seclusion and declining to do interviews, took the unusual step of speaking up.

French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said Kundera was "a writer and a voice that we will miss". "Milan Kundera's work is at the same time a deep, human, intimate and distant exploration," she said. Fellow Czech writer Karel Hvizdala told Czech Television he saw his friend last November and he was already in poor health.

Kundera’s humor had a deeper purpose. I could always recognize a person who was not a Stalinist, a person whom I needn’t fear, by the way he smiled. Kundera’s novels often felt essayistic; they were about whatever was on his mind: nostalgia, the absurdity of absolutes, music. Kundera saw sex as an act of redemption and of liberation under repressive regimes, but his obsession came back to haunt him. Geoff Dyer compared Kundera’s novels to the slapstick burlesque of “The Benny Hill Show,” with “the nurse in her bra and panties getting chased around by these horny doctors.”
