Blood pressure readings may not be accurate unless a person’s arm is positioned correctly, a new study suggests. “There was a chance that arm position was not important,” she said. The blood pressure cuff should be positioned at mid-heart level. To learn whether arm position made a difference in blood pressure readings, Brady and her colleagues recruited 133 adults, 78% of them Black and 52% female. “There is a pretty significant difference in blood pressure readings depending on arm position,” said Kamath, a cardiologist at UCLA Health.

A study in June found a decrease in prescriptions for birth control pills and emergency contraceptives in states with the most restrictions on abortion. South Carolina has one of the country’s strictest, prohibiting abortions at six weeks of pregnancy. Many women’s health centers, including abortion clinics where women had often gotten their birth control, closed after the Dobbs decision. New Morning attributes its success, in part, to tapping the power of primary care providers who aren’t usually trained in providing birth control. Following the Dobbs decision, women across the country have had to scramble to access birth control or search for longer-term solutions.

CNN —The United States reclaimed the Solheim Cup for the first time in seven years with a 15 ½ - 12 ½ victory over the Europeans on Sunday at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia. Team USA last won the Solheim Cup in 2017 with Europe winning in 2019 and 2021 before retaining the trophy in 2023 when the teams drew 14-14. 1 Nelly Korda led the USA’s challenge, winning both her matches as the USA underlined its dominance. While Europe looked to fight back on day two, Team USA constantly prevented the Europeans from clawing back the deficit and held on to lead 10-6 after the second day. Europe went into day three needing to repeat the Miracle of Medinah from the 2012 Ryder Cup – the men’s equivalent of the Solheim Cup.

That U.S. politicians from both major parties invited Mr. Netanyahu to Washington at all — let alone to lecture our lawmakers in the people’s house — is a disgrace. Mr. Netanyahu’s war on Gaza has already killed at least 39,000 Palestinians (many of them women and children), according to the health ministry in Gaza, displaced some 1.9 million people and spread what experts describe as a famine across the besieged enclave. The International Criminal Court prosecutor has applied for a warrant to charge Mr. Netanyahu with war crimes and crimes against humanity. History will cast Mr. Netanyahu’s visit in deservedly ugly tones. Gaza is our war, too, thanks to the indispensable military aid and political cover the U.S. government has lavished on Israel as the death toll climbs.

CNN —“Sorry/Not Sorry,” in theaters Friday, revisits the 2017 comedy-world firestorm involving five women’s accounts of sexual misconduct by comedian Louis C.K. only to be shut down; and Abby Schachner, a comic and writer who went public with her account of C.K. Then it was followed by C.K.’s Grammy-winning 2022 album “Sincerely Louis C.K.,” in which he joked about the behavior as a sexual hangup rather than abuse. “There are dozens of Russell Brands,” was the headline of one Guardian piece on female comics. I want a world where female comics have a workplace where they feel they’ll be supported — and, more importantly, employed — if they speak out about abuse.

To the Editor:Re “A Promise to Grads Who Show ‘No Promise,’” by Megan K. Stack (Opinion guest essay, June 9):Ms. Stack provides a dose of wisdom and perspective for parents, educators and teens about resilience and hope. A teenager I worked with years ago who struggled in high school with academic and other issues is now a successful adult. He recently got back in touch and told me that the biggest fiction from his childhood was how everyone back then said that if he didn’t excel in high school, he’d never amount to anything. Our youths are works in progress with different trajectories, which adults can tilt in either direction. Kids are sensitive to the implicit messages they get from their parents about failure and what constitutes success.

It’s high school graduation season. Time to cheer the teenage achievers (especially the overachievers) and send them off to campus adventures and incipient adulthood. The kids who got into trouble and now think of trouble as their natural habitat. The college rejects and even the high school dropouts. If I could give all those kids a graduation gift, it would be this plain but important truth: Everything can still be fine.

It was the 1950s, and nothing was going to get in the way of building a national highway system. Today, state highway departments have rebranded as transportation agencies, but building, fixing and expanding highways is still mostly what they do. Jared Polis signed a law that required the state to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90 percent within 30 years. Transportation is the largest single contributor to greenhouse gas emissions in the United States, accounting for about 30 percent of the total; 60 percent of that comes from cars and trucks. To reduce emissions, Coloradans would have to drive less.

To the Editor:Re “In Israel, ‘the Darkness Is Everywhere,’” by Megan K. Stack (Opinion guest essay, May 18):I appreciate Ms. Stack’s essay, in which she makes several important observations about current attitudes among Israelis. However, she leaves out the tragic choices that Palestinians have themselves made in Gaza and the West Bank. Instead, they diverted essentially all investment into war preparations, including the rocket and tunnel technology that has proved so formidable in several wars with Israel since then. Stephen HallSan FranciscoTo the Editor:I am grateful to The New York Times for publishing Megan K. Stack’s essay. We need more articles on what it is really like on the ground in Israel, and, as disheartening as it may be, we are all better and more informed for reading it.

By Megan K. StackIt was the pictures of Palestinians swimming and sunning at a Gaza beach that rubbed Yehuda Shlezinger, an Israeli journalist, the wrong way. Stylish in round red glasses and a faint scruff of beard, Mr. Shlezinger unloaded his revulsion at the “disturbing” pictures while appearing on Israel’s Channel 12. “We should have seen a lot more revenge there,” Mr. Shlezinger unrepentantly added. “A lot more rivers of Gazans’ blood.”It would be nice to think that Mr. Shlezinger is a fringe figure, or that Israelis would be shocked by his bloody fantasies. Israel has hardened, and the signs of it are in plain view.

BRADENTON, Fla, (AP) — Nelly Korda rallied to win her hometown LPGA Drive On Championship and delay Lydia Ko's LPGA Hall of Fame entry, outlasting the New Zealander on the second hole of a playoff after overcoming a three-stroke deficit with an eagle-birdie finish. With the question of whether Israel is committing genocide in Gaza now before the International Court of Justice, the Biden administration has struck a tone of glib dismissal. “Meritless” seems to be the agreed-upon term among U.S. officials. “The charge of genocide is meritless,” Secretary of State Antony Blinken intoned from a podium in Tel Aviv this week. “Meritless, counterproductive, and without any basis in fact whatsoever,” blustered the National Security Council spokesman John Kirby. Top Israeli political and military leaders have themselves helped to bolster the case against their government.

The agreement, he told me, is like a train with only one destination: a united Ireland. The agreement simply handed self-determination to the people of Northern Ireland. What Mr. Bryson is protesting, in other words, is the failure of a fair process to dependably produce the results he wants. The Northern Ireland Assembly will vote, every four or eight years, on whether to keep the protocols in place, and one-third of Northern Ireland lawmakers, so long as they represent at least two parties, will be able to formally object to E.U. Once again, Northern Ireland will get what a majority want.

I’ve watched U.S. warplanes attack Afghanistan; barely escaped a direct strike from a Russian MiG in Georgia, and lived for weeks under relentless Israeli bombardment in Lebanon. Israel has so far killed more than 8,000 people, the Gaza Health Ministry said, more than 40 percent of them children. But having spent time under bombardment, and having reported in Gaza, I have no time for these explanations. If we are to believe the Israeli political and military leadership’s own words — and I think we should — the assault on Gaza was driven, first, by straightforward vengeance. We could find out with a cease-fire, but they say we can’t ask for a cease-fire.

The British Supreme Court ruled in 2019 that previous investigations failed to meet the standards of the European Convention on Human Rights. Victims’ advocates believe that as many as one-third of more than 3,500 Troubles deaths bear the fingerprints of British security forces.
