The Lions Are No Longer the NFL’s Turkeys

Brad Holmes had been the Detroit Lions general manager for just a couple of weeks when he made the move that determined whether he would succeed at his new job—or set a woebegone franchise back even further. Holmes’s counterintuitive idea to turn around the team began with trading away the team’s most valuable player. But the deal in 2021 that gave up quarterback Matthew Stafford didn’t send the Lions into the type of painstaking rebuild that can take years, if it ever works at all. It actually allowed them to short-circuit that process and become a Super Bowl contender faster than anyone imagined.

___The generational shift at quarterback in the NFL reached a new milestone last week. This was the first time since Week 6 of the 2002 season that no quarterback born in the 1980s took the field. That raised the total of rookie starting QBs this season to nine, tying the non-replacement record set in 2019. The youth movement at quarterback has played a role in the struggles on offense across the league in the first half of the season, with scoring at its lowest mark through nine weeks since 2007. LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Los Angeles Rams are signing quarterback Carson Wentz, a person with knowledge of the deal tells The Associated Press. The source spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity Tuesday because Wentz needed to pass a physical before the deal could be announced. Wentz has been out of the NFL this season after starting seven games last season for the Washington Commanders. The Rams (3-6) are in need of another passer behind Matthew Stafford, who missed Los Angeles' dismal loss at rainy Green Bay last weekend with a thumb injury. Los Angeles attempted to make it through the season with Stafford and Rypien as the only quarterbacks on their roster.

The Rams (1-2) were held to three field goals from Brett Maher before Stafford found Tutu Atwell for a 1-yard TD with 1:03 left in the game. Four plays into Los Angeles' first drive, Atwell took an end around and raced to the end zone from 24 yards out. Both kickers traded field goals later in the quarter, with McPherson's 53-yarder as time expired in the first half sending the teams into the break tied at 6-6. McPherson added two more field goals to push Cincinnati's advantage to 10 before Stafford connected with Atwell for the late score that gave Los Angeles a fighting chance.

CINCINNATI (AP) — Getting into the end zone seemed tougher for the Los Angeles Rams when it mattered most on Monday night. The Rams suffered a 19-16 loss to the Bengals in their first regular-season rematch of the Super Bowl after the 2021 season. While the Aaron Donald-led defense kept Cincinnati without a touchdown in the first half, the Rams' offense behind a young, banged up offensive line couldn't capitalize. LOS ANGELES, Jan 11 (Reuters) - After enjoying a Hollywood ending with their dramatic Super Bowl triumph in Los Angeles last year, the Rams sequel bombed spectacularly this season and the franchise is now left waiting and see whether head coach Sean McVay will return. The Rams' ended the season 5-12, the worst ever record for a defending Super Bowl champion. "I'm going to take the next couple days to really reflect," McVay told reporters earlier this week. If McVay leaves, one contributing factor will be that the Rams prospects for immediate success are bleak. CNN —After the Los Angeles Rams claimed him off waivers Tuesday, quarterback Baker Mayfield got acclimated with his new teammates very quickly on Thursday as they hosted the Las Vegas Raiders. In a sensational introduction, Mayfield led the Rams back from a 16-3 deficit, capping the game off with a 98-yard drive in a two-minute drill situation – with no timeouts – to win 17-16. Baker Mayfield throws a pass during the game between the Las Vegas Raiders and the Los Angeles Rams on December 8 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, CA. The drive was capped by a 23-yard Mayfield touchdown pass to Jefferson with 10 seconds left. Taylor Rapp sealed the win for Los Angeles by intercepting a Derek Carr pass with two seconds left.
1 overall pick Baker Mayfield off waivers on Tuesday as the team looks to strengthen its quarterback room in the wake of recent injuries. The 27-year-old Mayfield was waived by the Carolina Panthers on Monday after a disappointing first season with the team. Just a day after he was waived, the struggling Rams picked up Mayfield, who had been taken as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Mayfield celebrates a Cleveland Browns touchdown against the Dallas Cowboys in the second quarter at AT&T Stadium on October 4, 2020.
