CNN —Dick Van Dyke is 98 and feeling it. After the legendary comedic actor had to pull out of a planned appearance at the recent Emmy Awards and an event in Utah, the New York Post caught up with Van Dyke as he was leaving a pharmacy in Malibu on Monday. “I feel old,” they reported a smiling Van Dyke saying when asked how he was doing. It had been announced on Monday that he would also no longer be attending a three-day fan event in Salt Lake City, Utah next weekend. The “Mary Poppins” star has continued working in recent years, including voicing himself for an episode last year of the animated series “The Simpsons.”

But there may be more of a science to eldest daughters than meets the eye. When a mother needed help, biology caused her eldest daughter to step up and mature faster to provide that help. Most striking of all, maternal distress was not found to speed up adrenal puberty in sons or younger daughters. "I have a closer relationship with her, to this day, than I do with many of my other older siblings," he said. His wife grew up as part of a similarly large brood — and her eldest sister had a similar experience.

The heirs backed Iger and his management for being "faithful" to Disney's "magic" and said the CEO has "grown this company in a modern world." Peltz's Trian Fund Management, which owns about $3 billion of Disney stock, has criticized Disney's leadership and is seeking seats on its board. In early February, Iger and Peltz threw jabs at each other following Disney's better-than-expected earnings report. They understand that the longevity of The Walt Disney Company isn't only the result of smart business decisions; it is rooted in the strong emotional connection Disney continues to forge with generations of people from around the globe. To the contrary, their "I alone can fix it" mentality makes clear that they are not interested in preserving the Disney magic, but stripping it to the bone to make a quick profit for themselves.

CNN —A British film industry group has raised the age rating for the beloved children’s classic “Mary Poppins” over discriminatory language. “Mary Poppins (1964) includes two uses of the discriminatory term ‘hottentots,’” a BBFC spokesperson said in a statement to CNN. Even as “Mary Poppins” remains a treasured part of the cultural canon, the film has been criticized for trafficking in blackface. It’s partly in this context that the discriminatory language referenced by BBFC appears in the film. In recent years, the movie industry has grappled with how to handle racist or offensive content in classic films.

“Mary Poppins” includes two uses of an offensive racial slur to describe an Indigenous group in South Africa. It is first heard when Admiral Boom asks Michael, a child, if he is going on an adventure to defeat said group. Admiral Boom repeats the slur during a chimney sweeps dance sequence when he shouts that he is being attacked. The film was originally rated “U,” for Universal, upon its release in 1964, and again in 2013 for a theatrical release, the B.B.F.C. When it was resubmitted in February for another theatrical release, it was reclassified as PG.

When my mother was 62 years old, she dusted off a clunky Cannondale with Mary Poppins handles and joined a bicycling group. She had no background as an outdoor activity enthusiast: She did not camp or hike, had never, say, paddled a kayak. My friends are simply responding to the very real negative messaging around older women: fading looks, frail bones, cognitive decline, no cultural significance. In one instance, Dr. Levy looked at data from a longitudinal study and came to this astonishing conclusion: Mind-set was the most significant factor determining individuals’ longevity. Dr. Levy’s studies show us that we need to believe fervently in the vitality of our future.

The first time my foster child, Ethan, had a full-on meltdown, I froze like a deer in headlights. At first, I wanted to, but only because I was panicking and didn't know what else to do. Intellectually I knew this was normal behavior for any toddler, and I suspected, extremely normal for any child going through trauma and significant change. I wanted them to know they were safe and to feel every big feeling they had. I wanted them to know that Jason and I weren't going anywhere.

Why Adults Are More Imaginative Than Children
  + stars: | 2023-12-02 | by ( Andrew Shtulman | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: +1 min
The idea that children are imaginative but adults are not is a popular theme in children’s literature. “Do you really mean we won’t be able to hear that when we’re older?” asks one of the children. “You’ll hear all right,” explains Mary Poppins, “but you won’t understand.”In these stories, children are open to possibilities that elude the adult mind. They grasp extraordinary ideas that adults cannot fathom and have clever insights that adults do not appreciate. Children play elaborate make-believe games with their toys and role-playing games with their peers.

LONDON, Oct 12 (Reuters) - From Mickey Mouse sketches to Cinderella's glass slipper, a new exhibition opening in London on Friday celebrates 100 years of the magical world of Disney. More than 250 items are on display at "Disney 100: The Exhibition", which begins with an introduction to animator and producer Walt Disney and his character, Oswald The Lucky Rabbit, said to be a prototype for Mickey Mouse. Also featured are sketches and interactive stations, and items from Marvel, Pixar and the "Star Wars" films, now part of the Disney conglomerate. "These characters can remain true and universal for decades," said Goldberg, who has worked on various Disney characters starting with the Genie in the 1992 animated feature "Aladdin". The exhibition at London's ExCel, of which another version will open in Chicago next month, runs as The Walt Disney Company marks 100 years since its founding, considered to be when Walt and his brother Roy Disney signed a contract with New York cartoon distributor Margaret Winkler on Oct. 16, 1923.

“In some ways, the challenges are greater than I anticipated,” Iger told CNBC in a revealing interview last month. But under Iger 2.0, Disney has cultivated even more headaches for itself, including a morale crisis sparked by one surprisingly candid interview with CNBC on July 13. Naturally, the comments set off alarms within Disney General Entertainment Content, the division that operates Disney’s broadcast and cable networks. A few days after the Faber interview, Iger tried to smooth things over at an off-site meeting with senior managers. But Disney appears to be all-in on the boss, even though the sequel almost never lives up to the original.

Pilobolus has been pushing bodies to their limits in unusual shapes and precarious balances since 1971, when its founding members met at Dartmouth College. The company’s leadership has shifted and changed over the years, but what remains is the group’s collaborative approach. Instead, many crypto-asset customers had accounts at nonbank crypto firms. This is very similar to what happened at nonbank financial firms during the 2008 financial crash and would have happened when the 2020 pandemic hit if the Fed had not acted so quickly. Finally, this principle doesn't mean that a company has to be a bank to offer financial products or services. Innovation in the financial sector is critical to maximizing benefits for consumers, and fair, properly and consistently regulated competition can drive this process forward. But consumers also expect that the rules that govern providers — whether bank or nonbank — protect them and financial stability.
