Read previewThe Army is on the lookout for new longer-range artillery shells after canceling some of its plans for new cannons. Army Secretary Christine Wormuth discussed plans at the 2024 Defense News Conference last week when she spoke on some of the potential follow-ups for longer-range artillery after the cancellation of its Extended Range Cannon Artillery program. "We still believe that we have a requirement for, you know, sort of an artillery system with that kind of range," Wormuth said. Advertisement"I think we may also be looking at sort of what we call, you know, 'innovating at the round,' looking at what can we do with the actual round to increase the range," Wormuth said recently. The Army is also still at work on ramjet-powered artillery shells, which have estimated ranges around 93 miles.

Getting F-16s and long-awaited weaponsDelays in getting Western equipment have long been a source of frustration for Ukraine. Western allies lifted some restrictions in May, allowing Ukraine to strike Russian troops building up at its borders. In just two weeks, starting on August 6, Ukraine claims its forces took more territory in Kursk than Russia had since the beginning of 2024. Ukraine is "losing territory and may suffer a breakthrough," Benjamin Friedman, policy director at the Defense Priorities think tank, told BI.

Russia has increasingly fired glide bombs at Ukrainian territory in its invasion of the country. Russia used 750 glide bombs on Ukrainian cities and villages last week alone, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Sunday. It's also fewer than the 50 glide bombs Russia has reportedly been firing daily into Ukraine's Sumy region, which neighbors Kursk. Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz defended his military record Tuesday amid attacks from Republicans led by his election rival, Sen. JD Vance of Ohio, who has accused him of stolen valor. “These guys have — are even attacking me for my record of service,” Walz said. “And I just want to say I’m proud to serve my country, and I always will be.”“I firmly believe you should never denigrate another person’s service record,” he said. Vance last week asserted that Walz had misrepresented his military record in those remarks. “I’d be ashamed if I was him and I lied about my military service like he did,” Vance said at the time.

Tim Walz “misspoke” in a newly resurfaced video from 2018 in which he said he handled assault weapons “in war,” a Harris campaign spokesperson told CNN on Saturday. “We can make sure those weapons of war, that I carried in war, are only carried in war,” Walz said in the video. Lauren Hitt, a Harris campaign spokesperson, said in a statement the governor misspoke in the clip. The clarification from the Harris campaign comes as the Trump campaign has sought to discredit Walz’s military service in the days since he joined the Democratic ticket. “What bothers me about Tim Walz is the stolen valor garbage,” Vance said.

He said the VA is legally bound to recover special separation benefits from veterans before those eligible can begin receiving disability payments. The VA had to recoup separation pay from 8,130 veterans in fiscal year 2020 and 8,550 in 2021. In 2021, the Veterans Benefits Administration began scanning all veterans’ service and medical records into electronic files, which “reduces the likelihood of this situation reoccurring,” Hayes said. Unique exceptions to the lawVeterans have a chance to pursue a waiver of their recoupment responsibilities for only certain special separation benefits under the law. CNN —JD Vance is making a second pass at introducing himself to America as the Ohio senator attempts to put his uneven rollout as Donald Trump’s running mate in the rearview mirror. Vance is also expected to begin holding news conferences with reporters as early as this week, the source said. At a closed-door fundraiser in Oklahoma City last week, Trump’s finance team was hoping the former president’s new running mate would raise $1 million. The campaign was well aware of Vance’s past criticisms of Trump and the deeply anti-abortion views he vocally defended. Still, people close to both Trump and Vance argue that America has yet to learn how effective the Ohio senator can be when in the spotlight.

Earlier this month, the US and allies practiced taking out a large surface ship with long-range weapons, including, for the first time, a US Air Force B-2 bomber. It showed the US military can use one of its most survivable weapons platforms, the B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, to sink a major surface ship with a low-cost guided bomb. The Air Force says its stealthy characteristics allow it to penetrate heavily defended areas and also fly with a small chance of being detected by radar at high altitudes. Mating it up with relatively cheap and demonstrably effective precision-guided bombs with warheads of up to 2,000 pounds could give the Air Force bombers the “anti-ship lethality” of a submarine-launched torpedo without the liabilities of a submarine, according to a US Air Force website. The Air Force first tested QUICKSINK in 2022, when an F-15 fighter jet released a GBU-31 Joint Direct Attack Munition (JDAM) that destroyed a full-scale surface target in the Gulf of Mexico, according to an Air Force statement.
