Lara Trump, the daughter-in-law of President-elect Donald Trump, announced Sunday night that she will step down as a co-chair of the Republican National Committee amid mounting speculation that she could be picked to fill a coming Senate vacancy. Ron DeSantis, a former political rival who ran against Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential primaries, will get to choose Rubio's replacement. DeSantis is also reportedly being considered as a replacement for Pete Hegseth, the embattled choice for defense secretary. A source told NBC News last week that the president-elect and DeSantis directly spoke about the issue. “Trump talked to the governor and wants him to do it,” a source familiar with the conversation said.

AdvertisementPresident-elect Donald Trump's views on whether TikTok, which a Chinese company owns, poses a threat to the United States have shifted 180 degrees. In 2020, Trump unsuccessfully sought to ban TikTok in the United States but has since had a change of heart. Some of Trump's top cabinet nominees support a TikTok ban. TikTok has denied accusations that it influences content inside the United States or is addictive to children. A spokesperson for TikTok told Business Insider that the TikTok ban law was "conceived and pushed through based upon inaccurate, flawed and hypothetical information, resulting in outright censorship of the American people."

Havana, Cuba CNN —For more than 60 years Cuba has buckled under US economic sanctions and its own government’s missteps. The son of Cuban exiles, Rubio has long made it his mission to ramp up the US trade embargo on Cuba. If confirmed, Secretary of State Rubio will face far more pressing issues like Russia’s war in Ukraine, conflict in the Middle East and countering growing Chinese influence in the world, particularly in Latin America. As secretary of state, Rubio could run point on devising additional economic sanctions on Cuba, increasing funding for dissidents and pro-democracy programs that Havana considers tantamount to regime change, and further restricting US travel to Cuba. During the first Trump administration, “Rubio called the shots on Cuba,” a US diplomat who did want to be quoted by name told CNN.

President-elect Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will nominate former Sen. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., to lead the Small Business Administration in his second term. Senator Kelly Loeffler, from the Great State of Georgia, to serve as Administrator of the Small Business Administration (SBA)," Trump wrote on Truth Social. She ran in the 2020 special election for the seat but lost in a runoff election to Democrat Raphael Warnock. After the 2020 election, as Trump pushed his claims of widespread voter fraud, Loeffler repeatedly refused to acknowledge that he had lost the presidential election. The small business administrator is subject to Senate confirmation.

But neither he nor Ivanka Trump is expected to take on any formal role in the White House. This accounting of the roles Trump’s family members will play in his second administration is based on conversations with 10 people familiar with the dynamics. “Susie ran the best of his three campaigns, and she’ll run the best White House that he’s had,” the former senior Trump White House official said. Now, the president-elect calls Kushner periodically to get his opinion on some potential hires, the former senior White House official said. A source close to Trump Jr. said he has no designs on an official or unofficial position in Trump’s White House.

President-elect Donald Trump’s cabinet selections are a mix of conventional (Senator Marco Rubio and Gov. Doug Burgum) and oddball (Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.) — reflecting the heterodox coalition that brought him back to power. While never a traditional Republican, Mr. Trump, in a second term, looks likely to go further than in his first in dumping many traditional Republican policies. In particular, Mr. Trump seems willing, even eager, to embrace vice. In his recent campaign, Mr. Trump embraced a strategy of social moderation.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday announced former Sen. Kelly Loeffler as his pick to lead the Small Business Administration. “Kelly will bring her experience in business and Washington to reduce red tape, and unleash opportunity for our Small Businesses to grow, innovate, and thrive. There had been several discussions between Loeffler and the transition team regarding the role of Agriculture secretary, and CNN reported last month that Trump had been poised to offer her the position. But Trump held off from announcing his Agriculture pick as he issued a slew of others late last month, then eventually offered the role to Brooke Rollins. Several of Trump’s other Cabinet picks — including Sen. Marco Rubio and Rep. Elise Stefanik — were at that party.

TikTok is defending itself in federal court over legislation President Joe Biden signed in April that would ban TikTok if it doesn’t sell itself to an American owner by the time Trump takes office. Most Trump allies who oppose TikTok have cited claims of Chinese government influence over American users, which TikTok denies. They have both publicly criticized the legislation that would force a sale of TikTok or lead to a U.S. ban. “Don’t be fooled — the TikTok ban is not about China harvesting your data. Vivek Ramaswamy, who Trump has said will work alongside X owner Elon Musk in newly created government efficiency advisory roles, has over 855,000 TikTok followers.

Hong Kong CNN —One called China an “existential threat.” Another called for a “whole-of-society effort” to confront China and was sanctioned – twice – by Beijing. “If you look at Trump’s team, most, if not all, are China hawks. His nominee for secretary of state, Sen. Marco Rubio, is known in China as the “anti-China vanguard” and currently sanctioned by Beijing. “Many of the hardliners indeed want a full confrontation and decoupling with China, but is that truly Trump’s objective for US-China relations? And in the eyes of Beijing, Rubio is not even the worst pick, according to Chinese experts.

Turkey wants the F-35s and may be willing to move the Russian air defenses that triggered the ban. Until five years ago, Turkey had planned to buy 100 of Lockheed Martin's F-35 stealth jets to modernize its air force. According to Bloomberg, Turkey may agree to restrict its Russian S-400s air defenses in return for the US lifting sanctions. His first major global brouhaha since winning reelection posed the following questions that will help define the character of his second term. There’s no guarantee that Canada, Mexico and China will back down immediately. Trump’s trade war rhetoric is a reminder that in his worldview, the United States has few friends — only adversaries against whom it can choose to win or lose. The prime minister therefore has a huge incentive to avoid a trade war that could cause havoc in the Canadian economy. Initial reaction to Trump’s broadside against Canada and Mexico suggests that many observers see his outburst as a negotiating tactic.

On Tuesday, Trump’s transition team signed an agreement with the White House after months of postponing the traditional transition process – a delay that Biden officials warned could undermine an orderly transfer of power and pose national security risks. In a statement announcing the agreement, the Trump transition said it will use its own security and information systems, its own office spaces and maintain its own ethics plan. The transition team said its ethics plan will be posted online in compliance with federal law. Several of Trump’s picks have vast personal fortunes and deep ties to the private sector. Trump’s transition team has so far relied instead on internal vetting.

Hong Kong CNN —Hong Kong has become a center for money laundering and sanctions evasion under the tightening grip of Beijing, US lawmakers have warned, calling for a re-evaluation of America’s close business relationship with the Asian financial hub. “We must now question whether longstanding US policy towards Hong Kong, particularly towards its financial and banking sector, is appropriate,” they added. Rubio, a fierce critic of Beijing’s crackdown on Hong Kong, has sponsored legislation that sanctioned Chinese and Hong Kong officials for alleged human rights violations in the city. This has massive implications for US businesses with big exposure to Hong Kong,” Fish said. “Sadly, the idea of Hong Kong as autonomous from China is now a farce … US companies need to understand that their Hong Kong operations will likely fall under increased scrutiny.”

[END TAPE]KRISTEN WELKER:According to the Washington Post, President-elect Trump plans to fire the team that worked with the special counsel. So, I think President Trump is picking reformers for these Cabinet positions. After the midterms Joe Biden said that there was no way President Trump would ever be back in the White House. He's going to sign some executive actions, but he's also going to then begin to roll out this plan. I also think he's going to face some skepticism by Republicans on using the military, for instance, going kind of into different states.

A handful of Democrats are sounding their approval of Republican Florida Sen. Marco Rubio as Secretary of State but others continue to doubt some cabinet picks made by President-elect Donald Trump. Democratic Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth said she has "a friendship" with Rubio and said she's looking forward to talking to him about his policies. Another name that has drawn substantial criticism from the Senate is former Democratic Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Trump's candidate for Director of National Intelligence. Sen. Duckworth alleged that Gabbard is "compromised," and she worries that the former congresswoman couldn't pass a background check. It's a slur, quite frankly," Republican Sen. Eric Schmitt of Missouri said Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press."

He has plucked two Fox News stars from their airwaves – Sean Duffy for Treasury secretary and Pete Hegseth to lead the Pentagon. Trump’s choice for ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, had a six-year run hosting a Fox News show. As a former reality TV star, Trump is deeply attuned to the power of the small screen. Among the flurry of names for non-Cabinet roles that Trump announced Friday evening were also several former and current Fox News contributors. And Sebastian Gorka, whom Trump named senior director of counterterrorism, was a Fox contributor in 2018 and 2019.

Xi outlined China's "red lines" for the US, including the country's rights to development. He told Washington not to cross "four red lines" — which analysts say is a clear message for the incoming Trump administration. Foreign Minister Wang Yi has warned about not crossing Beijing's "red lines" in the past. AdvertisementXi's language raised some eyebrows, with analysts calling it "harsh" and deeming China's foreign ministry readout "strikingly negative" in some sections. Related storiesXi named Taiwan President William LaiOf the four "red lines," Taiwan is the most sensitive issue between the two countries, as Xi has repeatedly said over the years.

Barack Obama was elected president, and the mood in the Republican Party picked up on the mood you’ve already described. But in the end, what he did electorally was not in that election to build the pan ethnic working class Republican Party. But at the very least, there was the conventional wisdom was that the Republican Party had to move substantially to the left on immigration. I just think that if the Republican Party is not the party of private property and wealth building, so I don’t think. Is there any chance that the Republican Party is about to not be the party of private property and wealth building No, no, I think you’re right.
