His conglomerate, Adani Group, builds and buys ports, factories and power plants, often under state contract or license. Mr. Adani’s business empire has become central to India during the rise of Narendra Modi, first elected as prime minister in 2014. As Mr. Modi brought India to the center of the world stage, he brought Mr. Adani in tow. Today, Mr. Adani’s flagship company is worth about 10 times more than it was at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, the U.S. government charged Mr. Adani, one of the world’s richest people, with multiple counts of fraud.

Gautam Adani, the billionaire chairman of India's Adani Group, was indicted on Wednesday along with seven others in New York federal court for his involvement in a large-scale bribery and fraud scheme. March 2023 to May 2023In March, India's Supreme Court sets up an independent six-member panel to investigate the allegations made in the Hindenburg report. Then in May, the court-appointed panel said it has "drawn a blank" in its probe into Adani group, according to Reuters. December 2023 to January 2024By the end of 2023, Adani Enterprise shares had recovered from the fallout and concluded the year with smaller declines of 26%. Modi has been accused by opposition leader Rahul Gandhi for assisting the Adani Group in securing contracts in Sri Lanka, India and Australia.

Gautam Adani, India’s second-richest person, has been charged by U.S. federal prosecutors with fraud on accusations that he and several alleged co-conspirators sought to pay $250 million in alleged bribes to Indian officials. The defendants then “lied about the bribery scheme as they sought to raise capital from U.S. and international investors.”The scheme, according to prosecutors, occurred between 2020 and 2024. Gautam Adani, worth approximately $70 billion according to Forbes, heads the Adani Group, an industrial conglomerate that holds stakes in logistics and energy units. The findings from the short-seller, Hindenburg Research, caused Adani Group shares to tumble — but they ended up recovering following a favorable ruling related to the allegations by India’s Supreme Court. Adani has also received direct support from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, something India’s opposition party has highlighted.

New York CNN —Indian billionaire Gautam Adani and other executives were indicted in New York for roles in a multi-billion-dollar fraud scheme, the US Department of Justice said Wednesday. Authorities said Adani and seven other senior business executives, including his nephew Sagar Adani, promised more than $250 million in bribes to Indian government officials to secure solar energy contracts. Worth more than $85 billion, Adani is Asia’s second-richest person behind countryman Mukesh Ambani, according to Bloomberg’s Billionaires Index. The solar energy supply contracts were projected to raise more than $2 billion in profits after tax over an approximately 20-year period. The outgoing American leader arrived for a family picture with world leaders during his final Group of 20 summit Monday, only to find the photo had already been taken without him. Chinese President Xi Jinping, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer were among those who did make it, smiling and raising linked hands for the traditional summit set piece. Mauro Pimentel/AFP/Getty ImagesThe moment was a fluke, the type of logistical error that’s almost inevitable at gatherings of almost two dozen world leaders. Yet it was difficult to ignore the impression it left: that Biden is disappearing from view as the world turns its attention to his successor. What members of Biden’s team have been willing to acknowledge is how little they actually know about what Trump and his team may be planning. In Lima and Rio de Janiero, Biden fielded no questions from the press and his aides spoke only off-camera. Reporters had opportunities to ask Biden questions at the G20 summit in Rome in 2021, in Bali in 2022, and in Vietnam in 2023, following the summit’s conclusion in India the prior day.

Former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, at the Faith & Freedom Coalition's 2024 Road to Majority Conference, in Washington, DC., on June 21. But current and former intelligence officials fear that Gabbard will refuse to relay intelligence reporting that doesn’t fit in with her — or the president’s — worldview. “Would that predisposition translate into pressure on analysis to fit the administration’s policy goals?” one senior former intelligence official said. “We’ll see.”Previous administrations have clashed with the CIA and intelligence agencies over assessments that didn’t support their policy agendas or their views about a particular threat or an adversary’s intentions. China, perhaps more than most countries, will be bracing for fractious relations ahead with the United States. “It makes sense for Chinese officials to use these big events to try and shape some of the international narratives right now,” said Li Mingjiang, an associate professor of international relations at Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University. “Since there’s not much time before January 2025.”Cargo containers and cranes at Yantian port in southern China's Shenzhen earlier this year. Incumbent governments have been punished in Britain, France, India, Japan, South Korea, and elsewhere. The near-universal shift away from Democrats echoes voters' rejection of incumbent political parties across the world this year. South Africa's African National Congress (ANC) party lost its majority. Similarly, Deutsche Bank's Reid wrote that voters are disappointed by how slowly their lives are improving amid cooler economic growth. He said they don't buy that incumbents can tackle immigration, some incumbent governments have had scandals, and voters have become "much more willing to change their vote from election to election."

Global trade changed considerably over the past four years — benefiting India — as President Joe Biden retained much of Trump's tariffs on China. EnergyOn the one hand, analysts expect Indian interests to be aligned with those of the United States regarding oil prices . Trump's previous term in office, whether intentionally or coincidently, saw moderate to low oil prices. As India imports over 90% of its oil needs, New Delhi will likely welcome any move by the U.S. to keep oil prices low. A quick resolution of the war in Ukraine — Trump's campaign promise — would also prove to be negative for oil prices.

Mr. Trump is widely regarded around the world as a transactional leader. Chinese officials do see a potential upside if Mr. Trump pulls the United States back from its role as a global leader. But the Kremlin seems skeptical that Mr. Trump would actually push for such a deal, especially because of his track record: There was jubilation in Moscow when Mr. Trump won in 2016, but over the next four years, U.S. sanctions against Russia only increased, and Mr. Trump sent antitank weapons to Ukraine. On Wednesday, he quickly made clear that he would seek to have Mr. Trump on his side, as one of the first world leaders to congratulate Mr. Trump in a post on X. Mr. Trump has been effective in demanding more military spending from fellow NATO members, said Mr. Heisbourg.

The Canadian government alleged on Tuesday that Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, a close ally of Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was behind the plots to target Sikh separatists on Canadian soil. The Washington Post newspaper first reported that Canadian officials alleged Shah was behind a campaign of violence and intimidation targeting Sikh separatists in Canada. India has called Sikh separatists "terrorists" and threats to its security. Sikh separatists demand an independent homeland known as Khalistan to be carved out of India. The Canadian case is not the only instance of India's alleged targeting of Sikh separatists on foreign soil.

Recently, Musk’s political activism has begun to have a tangible impact on his companies: Brands pulled their advertisements from X, tanking its value. NEW DELHI, India— Living in a pollution-free environment is a fundamental right, India’s Supreme Court said Wednesday as it urged authorities to address deteriorating air quality in the north of the country. Swiss group IQAir rated Delhi the world’s most polluted city in its live rankings. The Supreme Court pulled up the governments of both states for taking “selective action” against stubble burning, saying penal provisions were not being properly implemented. Recognizing this, the court on Wednesday directed the federal government and the governments of Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and the western state of Rajasthan to submit compliance reports. In Pakistan’s most populous province of Punjab, authorities have changed school timings and suspended outdoor activities because of pollution.

NEW DELHI, India — India and China have reached a deal on patrolling their disputed frontier to end a four-year military stand-off, the Indian foreign minister said Monday, paving the way for improved political and business ties between the Asian giants. India’s tougher vetting of all Chinese investment after the clashes effectively turned away billions of dollars from the likes of carmakers BYD and Great Wall Motor, and added more red tape in Indian companies’ interactions with Chinese stakeholders. However, Indian imports from China have surged 56% since the 2020 border clash, nearly doubling New Delhi’s trade deficit with Beijing to $85 billion. China remains India’s biggest source of goods and was its largest supplier of industrial products last year. Asked about the impact of Monday’s pact on trade with and investment from China, Jaishankar said: “It has just happened.

CNN —India and China have reached an agreement on military disengagement along their disputed border, New Delhi said, a step toward reducing frictions between the nuclear-armed neighbors that comes as both countries’ leaders arrive in Russia for a summit. Both foreign ministries declined to comment on whether the two leaders would hold formal one-on-one talks in Kazan. ‘A positive development’The violence in 2020 was followed by a process of disengagement and border talks, but friction points have remained, including areas where both sides previously patrolled but have since become so-called buffer zones. However, even with that restoration, there are other steps that would need to be taken in a long process along the disputed border. “There are many other issues of de-induction and de-mobilization of troops on both sides; infrastructure that has been built, etc.
