Israeli bombardment has killed more than 3,500 people in Lebanon and wounded more than 15,000, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The strikes occurred at 4 a.m. local time, destroying an eight-story building and leaving a crater in the ground. Also on Saturday a drone strike killed one person and injured another in the southern port city of Tyre, according to the state-run National News Agency. The agency said the people killed and injured in Tyre were fishermen. The strikes came a day after heavy bombardment of Beirut’s southern suburbs and as heavy ground fighting between Israeli forces and Hezbollah militants continues in southern Lebanon, with Israeli troops pushing farther from the border.

Migrant families and immigration advocacy groups are preparing for millions of families to potentially be separated from each other during the mass deportations planned by President-elect Donald Trump. It is unclear how exactly the deportations will play out and how families will be impacted. In states like Arizona, Colorado and Pennsylvania, mixed-status families, asylum-seekers and advocates say they are planning for scenarios where children could be separated from their parents. Alex Wong / Getty ImagesIn Tucson, Arizona, the Coalición de Derechos Humanos, a group of more than 10 nonprofit organizations, is helping undocumented and mixed-status families create “emergency packets” ahead of potential mass deportations. Advocacy groups are also bracing for state-level changes to immigration enforcement that could result in deportations.

I’m not a huge fan of musicals, nor of action movies. I’m a cultural omnivore, personally and professionally, so I knew I would eventually see these movies. But I would be seeing them as a sociologist, a curious outsider rather than the ideal audience member. Millions of Americans facing retirement are worried they won't be financially prepared — or fear that they'll have to work forever. Others said they took Social Security too early or retired without a long-term financial plan. Some older Americans wish they'd had more investing knowledgeA major theme among BI's survey respondents was that they lacked knowledge about investing. She also didn't realize that because she has a pension in addition to receiving Social Security when she retires, she would be affected by a little-known Social Security provision that would lower her monthly check. Between her pension of $713 monthly and Social Security, which she expects will be between $1,200 and $1,400 monthly, she'll have just enough to cover her rent.

I'm a nutritionist from Nara, Japan, and seaweed is one of the most nostalgic foods for me. The most lively and robust elders in my life, my 99-year-old aunt (she will be 100 in January!) and my in-laws who are 95 and 88, swear by a daily bowl of miso soup with wakame seaweed. Bonus points if I can get some red tosaka seaweed. Seaweed is a food that I will happily eat throughout my life.

Opinion | Three Theories of the Trump Cabinet
  + stars: | 2024-11-23 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
It did seem, at least, that the appointments to Trump’s cabinet might help us make plausible statements about the trajectory of his administration. That Trump has picked more loyalists than last time is true, inevitable and not especially useful in terms of figuring out how exactly (apart from never appointing a special prosecutor to investigate the boss!) That some of his nominees are eccentric or unfit-seeming and others are more conventional is likewise to be expected. Neither observation gives us a general theory of Trump 2.0. Instead, let’s consider three subtheories of how this cabinet might actually work.

An Israeli airstrike on a residential building in central Beirut killed at least 11 people on Saturday, the Lebanese Health Ministry said, part of an intensifying Israeli military campaign that appears aimed at pressuring Hezbollah into a cease-fire deal. The strike was an attempt to assassinate a top Hezbollah military commander, Mohammad Haidar, according to three Israeli defense officials who requested anonymity to discuss sensitive military operations. Hezbollah officials on Saturday afternoon said that none of the group’s leaders were at the site of the airstrike, and later in the day, one of the Israeli officials said Mr. Haidar was not killed. The strike came just after 4 a.m., jolting Beirut residents awake with thundering explosions that left much of the city enveloped in acrid smoke. It was the third strike this week in central Beirut, an area that had largely been spared since the war between Hezbollah and Israel escalated.
