Advancements in investment products and trading platforms haven't altered long-standing investing fundamentals, according to neurologist and best-selling financial author William Bernstein. The first pillar of investing according to Bernstein is theory, in which he stressed that risk and return are "joined at the hip." His second pillar is history. Bernstein's final investing pillar is business. This idea is one of the reasons Bernstein feels positive about the exchange-traded funds business and its role in reducing fees.

For those who want to ride the AI rally while still diversifying their portfolio beyond the tech sector, there are other fields benefiting indirectly from the AI craze, two ETF experts say. Baird's head of ETF trading, Rich Lee, and VettaFi's head of research, Todd Rosenbluth, both said there is a wider choice of industries seeing AI gains than investors may initially think. "We're seeing trends towards health care, we're seeing eCommerce companies," Rosenbluth told CNBC's Bob Pisani on "ETF Edge" on Monday. "It's going to help advisors do their jobs better, it's going to help investors sort through information better, it's going to help processing." "So, we're going to see AI creep into other sectors and industries we may not traditionally associate with tech or AI," Lee said.

State Street Global Advisors' George Milling-Stanley, whose firm runs the world's largest gold exchange-traded fund, believes cryptocurrency is no substitute for the real thing due its vulnerability to big losses. Milling-Stanley's firm is behind SPDR Gold Shares , the world's largest physically backed gold ETF. Milling-Stanley believes gold's 6,000-year history as a monetary asset serves as a significant sample basis to understand the benefits of investing in gold. But Milling-Stanley believes the economic backdrop bodes well for gold — recession or not. It's known as the world's largest consumer of gold jewelry behind India, according to the World Gold Council.

It's a sophisticated trading strategy that's becoming more accessible to retail investors. The strategy: Zero days-to-expiration options — which is essentially a one-day bet on the direction of the markets. Zero days-to-expiration options are contracts that expire the same day they're traded. Tilly believes these options are appealing to investors by allowing them to invest at the shortest duration of time left in a contract. "At the end of the trading day, the next result of that trade is settled in cash — not physically delivered like a stock or an ETF," he said.

Exchange-traded funds can still compete in today's "stock picker's" market, according to a top investor. He predicts actively managed ETFs will continue to gain traction through the second half of the year. "We used to only have index ETFs," Repetto noted. However, he emphasized this has changed over the past three years as the number of actively managed ETFs has grown. Repetto's firm is behind the Avantis U.S. Equity ETF , an actively managed portfolio of U.S. stocks.

Investors may want to reduce international exposure right now and stick with the home court. "One of the highest predicting factors for [the] future performance of international stocks versus U.S stocks is what the U.S dollar does," Arthur told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. "From 2011 to 2022, the dollar was in a straight bull market, so you were gonna lose in international equities no matter what you did." That's a perfect setup where we're going to be cutting rates before the rest of the world. That's where the catalysts will have to be to see value come back, to see international come back [and] to see emerging come back."

ETF experts Todd Sohn and VettaFi's Dave Nadig believe a second winning half is in store for technology and artificial intelligence plays. Sohn, Strategas' ETF and technical strategist, particularly likes Roundhill Generative AI and Technology ETF (CHAT). "What I like about [CHAT] is that it's actively managed," Sohn told CNBC's "ETF Edge" this week. Sohn also recommends Global X Robotics & Artificial Intelligence ETF (BOTZ) for those interested in introducing more industrials into their portfolio. "I like [BOTZ] if you want to get away from tech because you already have tech exposure in your portfolio.

WisdomTree is attempting to launch a spot bitcoin exchange-traded fund even though its peers have failed. The firm filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission last week, making it its second bitcoin ETF application after an initial rejection two years ago. "Some of the new filings have these data sharing agreements, surveillance sharing, new ways of doing it," he said. I think the data sharing agreements are the key element for that." According to an SEC filing this week, Fidelity Investments is also trying to launch a spot bitcoin ETF despite its prior failures.

A new ETF is making a big bet on real estate and other hard assets. CBRE's Investment Management launched the IQ CBRE Real Assets ETF in May with the idea that it will deliver inflation protection in a rising interest rate environment. "The ETF market is lacking options in this space," the ETF's portfolio manager, Dan Foley, told CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Thursday. Plus, he noted that hard assets are crucial in enabling a digital economy in the first place. Since the IQ CBRE Real Assets ETF launched May 10, it's down almost 6%.
