Comcast is expected to announce a plan Wednesday to spin off its cable networks into a separate company, two people familiar with the matter told NBC News. Comcast had announced during its quarterly earnings call in October that it was considering spinning off its cable networks. Bravo will remain part of Comcast’s NBCUniversal because its content is heavily featured on Peacock, CNBC reported. Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts will have a voting position in the new entity, but he won't be on the board of directors, CNBC reported. Executive Vice President Adam Miller will become NBCUniversal’s chief operating officer, CNBC reported.

Salt Lake City checked all the boxes for a new professional sports team — particularly in the National Hockey League. Salt Lake City kicked off its first season in the NHL this year after the Utah Hockey Club relocated from Phoenix. The early excitement of the fanbase, marked by sellout crowds and high merchandise sales, is solidifying Salt Lake City as a sports market. So far, every one of the 11,131 unobstructed view seats at Delta Center has been sold out, according to the Utah Hockey Club. The Utah Hockey Club generated the highest retail sales on its opening night of any hockey team this season, including the Florida Panthers, the 2023-24 Stanley Cup champions, according to the Utah Hockey Club.

Comcast is moving forward with the spinoff of its cable network channels, a person familiar with the matter told CNBC's Julia Boorstin on Tuesday. The separation is expected to take about a year, and an announcement from the company could come as early as Wednesday, the person said. The company had announced during its quarterly earnings in October it was considering a split of the cable networks. Diamond Sports moved closer to exiting bankruptcy on Thursday after a bankruptcy judge approved its reorganization plan, which slashes the hefty debt load that toppled the company. The green light is a significant milestone for the owner of regional sports networks, which has been under bankruptcy protection since March 2023. It presented its reorganization plan to the court with a standing objection from the U.S. The reorganization plan that received court approval on Thursday will see Diamond's debt load cut from nearly $9 billion to $200 million. Diamond is now unencumbered by legacy debt, financially stable and enthusiastically supported by new ownership," Diamond CEO David Preschlack said in a release Thursday.

Disney has done the math on separating its TV networks business, and it appears too messy to be done — at least for now. The company's chief financial officer, Hugh Johnston, said Thursday on CNBC's "Squawk Box" that the "cost is probably more than the benefit" when it comes to separating its TV networks business, given the "operational complexity." The future of the traditional TV network business has been top of mind in the media industry. In late October, Comcast executives said they were exploring a separation of the cable networks business. Disney reported Thursday that revenue for its traditional TV networks was down 6% for its most recent quarter to $2.46 billion, while profit in the division sank 38% to $498 million.

Diamond Sports reached a deal with Amazon's Prime Video that will allow its 16 regional sports networks to be made available on the streaming platform. The company's previously launched FanDuel Sports Network streaming options will still be available. In October, Diamond inked a naming rights deal with Flutter -owned FanDuel, rebranding its networks from Bally Sports to FanDuel Sports Network. Both Prime Video and the FanDuel Sports Network app will offer the single games, according to the person familiar with the offering. Liberty Media announced Wednesday that it's spinning off most assets besides Formula One auto racing into a separate publicly traded company, called Liberty Live, and that CEO Greg Maffei is stepping down at year-end. After the split, Liberty Media will hold Formula One, which Liberty acquired in 2016 and later spun out as a tracking stock, and MotoGP, upon the closing of that transaction. The Liberty Media and Liberty Live split is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025, and the sale of Liberty Broadband to Charter is projected to be completed in mid-2027. "Following today's announcements at Liberty Media and Liberty Broadband, all the Liberty acquisitions completed during my tenure are now in structures where shareholders can have more direct ownership in their upside," Maffei said in a separate release. The company said Tuesday more than 50% of its new sign-ups are for ad-supported plans in countries that offer the option. When Netflix launched its ad platform two years ago, the company said Nielsen would rate its content. Netflix offered its last update on its ad-supported tier in May, when it said it reached 40 million global monthly active users, nearly doubling the figure it had shared in January. Netflix also announced in May it would launch its own advertising platform, ending a partnership with Microsoft for that technology.

Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Braves have raised issues with the reorganization plan and future viability of Diamond Sports Group, the country's largest owner of regional sports networks, according to a Friday bankruptcy court filing. The filing noted that both MLB and the Braves have a vested interest in Diamond Sports succeeding with a reorganization plan, but they are not convinced that the one currently proposed is viable. Meanwhile, Diamond will seek approval of its reorganization plan from a U.S. bankruptcy judge on Thursday. The Friday objection does not mean that the Braves have turned away from Diamond for their regional media rights. Apparent GOP opposition to the CHIPS Act means that semiconductor consolidation might be challenging, the advisor noted, while cautioning it is still too early to know what a Trump presidency would mean. The company's revenue rose 6.5% to $32.07 billion compared to the same period last year. Overall revenue was boosted by the Summer Olympics in Paris, which NBCUniversal exclusively broadcast in the U.S., and domestic broadband revenue — despite continued slowing customer growth. Revenue for the media segment – mainly comprised of NBCUniversal – was up nearly 37% to $8.23 billion, largely due to the Olympics. Unrivaled, the new and upcoming pro women's basketball league, signed an exclusive, multiyear media rights deal to air its games on TNT and truTV, as well as streaming platform Max. The heightened interest in the WNBA led to the league's most recent media rights deal being valued at $2.2 billion for 11 seasons, CNBC previously reported. The WNBA's media rights deal is negotiated as part of the NBA's agreement. The media rights deal with Unrivaled gives Turner Sports the opportunity to keep basketball on its air if it is not successful in its lawsuit. Star broadcaster and NBA Hall of Famer Charles Barkley recently said he wouldn't leave TNT Sports even if the company doesn't have NBA media rights in the future.
