Living in New York is busy, Ms. Stefanatos said, and there’s so much going on. “I’m in a job where I’m speaking to people a lot,” Ms. Stefanatos said. “I didn’t look at anything else,” Ms. Stefanatos said. “That was a bit of a pain, to be completely honest,” Ms. Stefanatos said. “If anything, I didn’t realize how extensive the co-op process is, even for a tenant,” she said.

Hot pink made waves when Italian designer Elsa Schiaparelli released her own iteration, called “Shocking pink,” in the mid-1930s. The original Barbie doll didn’t even wear pink when it first debuted in 1959, wearing, instead, a black and white chevron bathing suit. Barbie’s pink shades evolved over the years, and in 2008 the vibrant “Barbie Pink” became an official Pantone color. Gifty Walker, Joybird’s director of merchandising and sourcing in Los Angeles, noted that Joybird had a hot pink couch that was popular in 2016. Now hot pink is back and customers are using it to eschew traditional neutrals like grays, browns, and tans.

To run the lines and add the concrete slab under the tub was about $8,000, Mr. Lynn said. The bathtub isn’t the yard’s focal point, but looks cohesive with the outdoor space that suggests a wine country resort. “We were trying to maximize what we could with a limited income and limited lifestyle,” said Mr. Burns. Christina Chaccour, 33, counted an outdoor bathtub as a “nonnegotiable” when she and her husband renovated their backyard in Danville, Calif., about five years ago. The double slipper tub sits on black-and-white tile with a star print, and a concrete privacy wall separates it from the side yard.

In 2020, Russell Franchi’s clients liked many features of a beach home in South Walton County, Fla., but it was missing one thing: an elevator. The clients, who had limited mobility, considered retrofitting an elevator, but ultimately walked away from the deal before finding a house that already had one installed. Kaitlind Meeks-Price, a sales representative of Delaware Elevator in Salisbury, Md., said that elevators are typically 3 feet by 4 feet, but she’s seen them go up to 15 square feet. A basic, three-stop elevator, including installation, typically starts around $32,000 to $35,000. When it comes to maintaining the lift, Ms. Meeks-Price suggests having it serviced at least once a year for the first five years.
The Latest Must-Have Kitchen Staple: A Pantry

This week, The Wall Street Journal’s Mansion section is rolling out stories from our special food and wine issue. Be sure to read stories like this one on a white kitchen getting a natural makeover and this one on high-end homeowners tricking out rooms for their alcohol collections. In Atlanta, Will Letton’s listing has not one, but two spaces that function as pantries. One is technically a scullery (a sort of second kitchen with additional appliances and counter space) and the other is a butler’s pantry. Kitchen storage has always been at a premium, said Mr. Letton, an agent with Atlanta Fine Homes Sotheby’s International Realty, but the pandemic increased that need as people began to entertain in their homes.
Playing sports comes with a lot of health and social benefits, but no one says you have to leave the house to get them. In Vancouver, Wash., for example, Jonathan Romano’s listing has a professional-grade bowling alley complete with the usual trappings—including screens to track scores, seating for guests and bumpers for the children—on the main level. In Salem, Utah, Casey Cloward, owner of Raykon Construction, has built about 10 indoor basketball courts. He liked the ones he built for his customers so much that he included one in his home when he built it four years ago.
A-frames are easily recognized by their triangular shape. It is the result of bringing the roof down and eliminating the walls, said Brent Campbell, an architect in Asheville, N.C. “They became this sort of iconic shape for rural vacation retreat-type structures,” said Mr. Campbell. In the book “A-Frame,” author Chad Randl, an architecture historian and professor at the University of Oregon, wrote that A-frames have shown up in history from ancient Japan to rural Europe. These structures are strong and snow slides right off their pitched roofs, making them appealing in remote, cold areas. Because they were affordable and functional, A-frames became a popular vacation-home style in the U.S. in the 1950s.
This week, The Wall Street Journal’s Mansion section is rolling out stories from our ski and mountain homes issue. Check out this story on how ski resort expansions are driving up local home prices and how Whistler is drawing home-buyers for its year-round attractions. In Aspen, Colo., a 12,000-square-foot lodge makes use of reclaimed wood from Yellowstone. The south-facing windows look out at the Rocky Mountains and overhead is a pentagonal truss system with exposed beams.
Bay windows originated in the English Renaissance and continue to be used today in a variety of home styles. Known as projection windows because they extend from the building, bay windows consist of three sections: a window in the center flanked by an angled window on either side. They add interesting architectural detail, while extending houses into the landscape and letting in light, said architect Michael Franck. Another popular style of projection window is the bow window. Bow windows are made up of many windows arranged on a curving structure which gives it a smooth arc shape.
