Ford to lay off 4,000 workers in Europe

London CNN —Ford plans to cut almost 4,000 jobs in Europe over the next three years, about 14% of its workforce in the region, as the carmaker faces slowing demand for electric vehicles and rising competition from China. “The global auto industry continues to be in a period of disruption, especially in Europe, where the industry faces unprecedented competitive, regulatory and economic headwinds,” Ford said in a statement. Last year, the company said it would axe around 4,900 jobs across Europe. The news of the Ford cuts comes just weeks after Volkswagen said it would trim employee pay by 10% to protect jobs and safeguard the company’s future. The German automaker plans to close at least three factories in its home country and lay off tens of thousands of staff as it grapples with a weak car market in Europe and a steep loss of market share in China.

AdvertisementFord is cutting 4,000 jobs in Europe after "significant losses" in its passenger vehicle operations. The company also cited rising competition and weaker-than-expected demand for EVs. Ford CFO John Lawler called for joint industry action in a letter to the German government. Ford said it would cut 4,000 jobs in Europe by the end of 2027 amid rising competition and weaker-than-expected demand for EVs. Earlier this month, Japanese automaker Nissan announced 9,000 layoffs and a 20% cut in global production amid falling sales in the US and China.

Ford Explorer electric cars are parked on car transporters on the Ford factory premises. It is the first electric car from Ford in Europe. The US car manufacturer Ford wants to cut 2,900 jobs in Germany by the end of 2027 in order to reduce costs. Ford said on Wednesday it would cut around 14% of its European workforce, blaming significant losses in recent years compounded by weak demand for electric vehicles, a lack of government support for the shift to EVs, and rising competition. The European Union has slapped tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, saying they benefit from unfair subsidies from China's government.

WASHINGTON — Americans are poised to elect a new Congress, with control of both chambers at stake as every seat in the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate is up before voters on Election Day. Republicans favored to win the SenateIn the Senate, Democrats currently have a 51-49 edge, but Republicans are favored to capture the majority. They’re all but guaranteed to win an open seat in ruby-red West Virginia, with Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin retiring. If Harris wins, Republicans will need one more seat in addition to West Virginia to capture the Senate. In New York, Republicans are defending four seats they flipped in 2022, propelling them to win the House majority.

Former President Donald Trump’s promises that he’ll win New York are more empty bluster than evidence-based prediction. Two statewide Siena polls have also shown Trump performing better than his 2020 vote share in New York State as a whole. But overall, these races include the most competitive around New York State, and all but the 18th are currently represented in Congress by a Republican. Democrats are not concerned about the top of the ticket, but for those down ballot — where Democrats lost five competitive House races here in 2022 — this election is a chance to earn back what was once theirs. “Progressive state issues like bail reform and congestion pricing remain challenging for Democrats in the New York suburbs,” longtime New York Republican operative Matt Coleman said.

Ford's CEO, meanwhile, called the Chinese auto industry an "existential threat" after a visit to the country in May. Now unions are pushing back, demanding the return of traditional pension plans their members lost in past concession deals. First, a traditional pension plan that pays retirees, or their survivors, a fixed amount of money every month until they die, known as a defined benefit plan. Far less than 1% have only a traditional pension plan. The loss of the traditional pension plan at Boeing 10 years ago is one of the issues driving the strike this year. Washington CNN —The House failed on Wednesday to pass a six-month GOP government funding plan that included a controversial measure targeting noncitizen voting, an effort pushed by Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. The House vote was 202 to 220, with 14 Republicans voting against it, two Republicans voting present and three Democrats voting for it. Johnson would not reveal on Wednesday ahead of the planned vote what he would do if the GOP government funding plan fails and said he has spoken to Trump “a lot” about government funding after the former president floated a government shutdown. Trump had previously said that if Republicans don’t receive “absolute assurances” about election security, they should not pass a funding extension. The six-month funding plan from House Republicans would have extended government funding until March 2025.

New York Democrats offered a wide array of excuses for their disastrous 2022 midterms, when Republicans flipped four seats outside New York City on their way to winning a narrow US House majority. Now, less than two months out from the 2024 general election, the state party, its campaign season allies, chastened candidates and Gov. D’Esposito is one of five New York GOP freshmen facing an onslaught from Democrats determined to claw back suburban voters. “New York is the reason Democrats lost the House in 2022,” said Pamela Shifman, president of the Democracy Alliance, a liberal group spending big in New York this year. “There’s more focus than there was the last couple cycles, both from the state party, but also obviously the national committees,” the strategist said.

So it might surprise investors that the automaker believes its new path to profitability for electric vehicles will first be led by smaller, more affordable vehicles. “We’re quite convinced that the highest adoption rates for electric vehicles will be in the affordable segment on the lower size-end of the range,” he told CNBC on Thursday. Gjaja’s comments came a day after the automaker announced updates to its EV strategy that will cost up to $1.9 billion. Gjaja said the decision wasn’t taken lightly, especially the cancellation of the upcoming three-row vehicle, which Ford CEO Jim Farley and other executives had been touting as a game changer for several years. He said the Ford, in part, developed the skunkworks team to prove that Ford can compete against the Chinese automakers.
