☆ Despite presidential headwinds, these Senate Democratic candidates won states Harris lost

CNN —Republicans flipped the Senate, but Democratic candidates often outran the top of the ticket, winning at least four battleground states that Vice President Kamala Harris lost. Harris lost all seven swing states to President-elect Donald Trump, while her party’s Senate candidates narrowly held Wisconsin, Nevada and open seats in Michigan and Arizona. In some races, the differences between the Senate candidates’ and Harris’ performances were more pronounced among subsections of the Democratic coalition. While Trump won independents by 2 points, Rosen won the group by 6. Overall, Democratic Senate candidates received more votes than Harris in about half of this year’s races, including in less competitive states such as Minnesota, Virginia and Missouri.

Democrat Angela Alsobrooks has won Maryland’s Senate race, NBC News projects, defeating popular former Republican Gov. Larry Hogan and becoming the first Black woman elected to represent the state in the Senate. It also means that, for the first time in history, Maryland will have a Black senator, governor and mayor of its largest city, Baltimore. Hogan could never quite replicate the support he received from Democrats as governor in his Senate campaign. In Hogan, many Marylanders saw a Republican who represented an increasingly rare version of the party prior to Trump’s takeover.

CNN —Republicans will win the US Senate majority, CNN projects, shifting the balance of power in Washington. Should Harris prevail, she would face problems in confirming members of her Cabinet and judicial nominees, and the GOP Senate could thwart her domestic plans. Jim Justice was projected to pick up the Senate seat vacated by retiring Democrat-turned-independent Sen. Joe Manchin. And in Nebraska, CNN projects that Republican Sen. CNN —Democrat Angela Alsobrooks will win the Maryland Senate race, CNN projects, defeating Republican former Gov. Her victory is a relief for Democrats, who were facing a daunting Senate landscape before this race came on the map. Neither made their history-making potential a key message on the trail, but it was resonant in a state where Black voters – and Black women in particular – are a crucial part of the electorate. Alsobrooks’ home turf of Prince George’s County is home to one of the largest middle-class Black populations in the country. The Democratic Party quickly united around Alsobrooks, who already had the backing of most of the state’s congressional delegation.

This digital ad posted by Republican Senate candidate Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania, about a week before Biden eventually dropped his bid, was the blueprint.
