My family and I spent about $750 to take a roundtrip ferry across Lake Michigan. We took our car on the ferry, which accounted for the majority of our expenses. The trip was relaxing, but next time, I'll rent a car at our destination. The trip wasn't stress-free, but the views made up for itThe beautiful views were the best part of the trip. Next time we take the ferry, though, we'll borrow someone else's car at our destination or rent one at the terminal.

The Palisades nuclear plant in Michigan has closed a $1.5 billion loan to support the first reactor restart in U.S. history, the Department of Energy announced Monday. Palisades' owner, Holtec International, hopes to restart the plant in the fourth quarter of 2025, subject to approval by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. Demand for nuclear power is growing as the U.S. seeks carbon-free energy to meet rising electricity demand while meeting its climate goals. In the case of Palisades, the power is spoken for by Wolverine Power Cooperative, a nonprofit that provides electricity to rural communities in Michigan. Palisades will support 600 jobs in Covert Township near Lake Michigan and provide enough power for 800,000 homes, Turk said.

A private Facebook group that he founded, Michigan Preppers, has nearly 18,000 members, up from about 8,000 since the Covid pandemic. He attributes the growth to a feeling of turmoil during President Joe Biden’s term. “If Trump isn’t elected, I’m thinking we’re either looking at a military coup or we’re looking at a second civil war,” said the part-time steel company worker. “I don’t recognize this country. As a new school year begins, I reminisce about unwrapping fresh school supplies and reuniting with friends after a summer apart. It's my biggest regret from college: I don't wish I worked harder or studied more — I wish I cared less about my GPA. The sacrifices I made to get near-perfect grades seemed worth it when I graduated from Northwestern with honors in 2019. And if you're planning on getting a postgraduate degree, like going to law or medical school, your GPA will be an integral part of your admission decision. Those, I believe, will do more for your career prospects than a 4.0 ever could.

We looked for places in the city but couldn't really find anything in our $1,500 budget that suited our needs. AdvertisementLooking back, I wish we'd spent more time looking for a place in the city instead of escaping to the suburbs. AdvertisementWhen we lived in the city, we'd see friends just about every weekend and could decide to hang out pretty spontaneously. My depression got worse, and I realized how much of my health and well-being had been tied to a city lifestyle. The Palisades Nuclear Generating Station in Covert, Mich. John Madill | The Herald-Palladium | APThe Palisades Power Plant on the shores of Lake Michigan had become a piece of history, a relic of an era when nuclear energy was viewed as the future. The new technology, which could become the first of its kind on the U.S. grid, promises to speed deployment of nuclear plants in the future. The U.S. and a coalition of more than 20 other countries pledged in December to triple nuclear energy by 2050. But building new nuclear plants is slow and expensive. SMRs are viewed as an important path to expand nuclear power because they promise to reduce capital costs, a major hurdle to building new plants.

Early on Sept. 30, 1893, the Margaret A. Muir schooner, carrying cargo of bulk salt, cleared the narrow Straits of Mackinac on its way down Lake Michigan toward Chicago’s port. As the crew rounded Michigan and steered south, the ship encountered relentless 50-mile-an-hour winds. Captain David Clow and his crew of six barely made it out alive, steering a lifeboat through high waves to the Wisconsin shore. In his grief, Captain Clow, who was 71 years old and had survived at least three earlier shipwrecks, swore off sailing. The Muir joined thousands of other ships claimed by the stormy waters of the Great Lakes in the 19th century.

CNN —A Michigan mother died after pushing her 2-year-old daughter away from an out-of-control vehicle at a drag racing event on Sunday, police say. Kadie Price, 33, was a spectator at the racing event, which took place at the Silver Lake State Park Sand Dunes in Michigan’s western Oceana County. That vehicle then slammed into Price – seconds after she had pushed her daughter safely out of the way. Silver Lake State Park Sand Dunes is a popular destination for its 450-acre off-road-vehicle area, approximately 80 miles from Grand Rapids. With nearly 2,000 acres of sand dunes along Lake Michigan, the park is the only sand dune riding area east of the Mississippi, according to the Michigan State Natural Resources website.

“Traverse City is becoming Myrtle Beach meets Hilton Head — a place catering to a population outside the region,” Mr. Treter said. What sets this project apart from others like it is how it’s paid for. Mr. Treter developed the space with Kate Redman, a lawyer who works with nonprofit organizations, and several other entrepreneurs who were dealing with similar challenges. They created a crowdfunding campaign that recruited nearly 500 residents to invest $1.3 million as a down payment to help finance the project’s construction and earn up to 7 percent annually in dividend payments. Roughly 500 more residents contributed $50 each to join the project as co-op members.

Researchers used sonar to locate a long-lost shipwreck in Lake Michigan. The 135-foot ship sank in 1886 after colliding with another boat. Last year, the group announced the discoveries of a 190-foot cargo vessel that sank in Lake Huron amid blustery winds in 1894 and a 140-foot schooner that sank in Lake Michigan in 1881. The Hickox "plowed into the side of the Milwaukee," according to the shipwreck association, nearly capsizing the ship. Nearly two hours after the crash, the Milwaukee sank beneath the waters.

An icy crust on the Straits of Mackinac is melting into slush atop a shimmering, narrow waterway prized for its beauty and its role in supporting the local economy. The fight over Line 5 in both Michigan and Wisconsin, where another section of the pipeline crosses the Bad River Reservation, could have sweeping implications for the power of states to regulate fossil fuels, for tribal sovereignty and for U.S.-Canada relations. Some or all of these issues are bound to surface in the upcoming presidential election. Both Wisconsin and Michigan are battleground states. And in either place the debate over Line 5 could complicate election-year politics, particularly as candidates compete to eke out any advantage with voters they can find, whether on environmental issues, fossil fuel reliance or jobs.

The Biden administration announced on Wednesday that it had agreed to provide a $1.52 billion loan guarantee to help a company restart a nuclear power plant in Michigan — the latest step in the government’s effort to revive the nation’s reactors. The loan guarantee is conditional on the facility receiving regulatory approvals and fulfilling other requirements. But many of the country’s nuclear reactors, including the Palisades plant, are at or near the end of their lives and need major upgrades. And few U.S. companies have built new nuclear plants in recent decades because doing so is incredibly expensive and time consuming. Holtec bought the Palisades plant in 2022 in order to close the facility but later campaigned to reopen the plant with the backing of the Michigan governor, Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat.

All told, eight states experienced a record-warm season, including Wisconsin, Michigan, New York and Minnesota, plus North Dakota, Iowa, Vermont and New Hampshire. Instead of a winter wonderland, the past several months have offered tourists less snow, less ice aind less opportunity for some outdoor activities. According to the BEA, snow activities in states clustered around the Great Lakes add hundreds of millions of dollars to the region’s economy. For example, Wisconsin snow activities added $83.6 million in 2022, according to the BEA, and roughly $130 million in Michigan the same year. “The identity of the UP and especially Marquette is very much tied to the winter season and always has been.

Mike Bost, a Republican and Marine Corps veteran, was first elected to the House in 2014. Don’t say ‘age’Democrats have their own issues that are captured in races in their stronghold of greater Chicago. But to the Democratic establishment, “age” is a word not spoken aloud, not with President Biden in the White House. But similar issues driving their primary fights will play out in swing House districts and swing states across the country.

My mom and my aunt are estranged, but I've been close with my aunt since I was young. That year my aunt and I decided to start writing letters since I didn't have my own phone. I've never known exactly why my mom and aunt don't talkWhen I asked my mom why we didn't see her, she'd vaguely reply, "She was always kind of mean to me," or, "We just don't." As my aunt and I began to speak more, I gathered breadcrumbs of what happened between her and my mom. After graduating from Catholic school, my mom abandoned religion, yet my aunt consistently attends church.

Migratory species include some of the most iconic animals on the planet, like elephants. Those activities also fragment migratory species’ pathways, sometimes making it impossible for them to complete their journeys. Around 58% of the monitored locations recognized as important for migratory species are facing what the CMS says are unsustainable levels of pressure from humans. “Migratory species have a special role in nature as they don’t recognize political boundaries,” said Anurag Agrawal, professor of environmental studies at Cornell University.
