After all of these years, after all of the rather incredible rallies and gains in the stock market from so many groups, the typical morning still starts with a bevy of negativity. We hear about OpenAI and its brilliant $167 billion valuation , but we don't see any stock available to public-market investors. I have been furious at myself for thinking the Chinese government couldn't do anything about the country's struggling stock market. The Chinese stock market has been rallying nicely since the stimulus announcements. A look back in history shows how a key group of transportation stocks performed the last time there was a major port strike, according to Wolfe Research. Against that backdrop, Scott Group, a senior analyst covering freight transportation at Wolfe, looked at transportation stocks in 2002, the last time there was a major port strike in the U.S. That strike, which lasted just 11 days and affected only West Coast ports, hurt transportation stocks throughout the protest, he said. But those same stocks staged a major comeback in the month after the strike ended. Here are how some key stocks performed during and after the last major strike. Robinson Worldwide was among the biggest laggards during the last port strike.

Yet, India's central bank appeared to dismiss the negativity earlier this month and reiterated its bullish view of India's growth rate, still expecting the economy to grow by 7.2%. However, when prompted on whether India's growth rate could compete with what China has already achieved for over two decades, the governor was less buoyant. But if you are looking at 10-plus growth, before I venture into that, I have to really do my homework much more," Governor Das said. This week, China's central bank, President Xi Jinping and other top leaders announced plans to boost the country's economy and attract investment. If India intends to grow as fast as China did, it may have to get a move on.

It's September – and that means it's prime time to think about maximizing after-tax returns as the year winds down. Of course, there may be a price to pay for that performance: Uncle Sam will want his share of taxes. Here are a few steps that could help you hold onto more of your portfolio's returns this year. Munis spin out income that's free of federal taxes, and they may be exempt from state levies if the investor resides in the issuing state. By directly giving low basis highly appreciated stock (instead of selling the position and donating cash proceeds), you avoid incurring the capital gains tax.

The tech slide has many investors anxious to buy the dip, but now is the time for caution, some say. Communication services and information technology stocks are the two worst-performing S & P 500 sectors this quarter, after having fallen into a correction from their peaks in July. Communication services is more than 11% off its 52-week high, while information technology is more than 12% off its recent high. For much of this year, any dips in the high-flying tech stocks have proven to be a buying opportunity for investors, as the promise of artificial intelligence has traders unable to stay away from these names for long. Investors were buying the dip again midday through the trading session Tuesday.

During the sell-off, strategists at Goldman Sachs recommended buying the dip in US stocks, albeit carefully, as they reiterated their year-end S&P 500 price target of 5,600. Economically sensitive stocks have lagged defensives by at least 5 percentage points in a single week 12 times since 2000, according to Goldman Sachs. "Despite the weak jobs report, our economists believe continued economic expansion is far more likely than recession," Kostin wrote. Goldman Sachs found that those micro factors explained 86% of stock returns in the first half of 2024, versus the long-term average of 57%. Fewer worries about the near-term economic outlook mean stocks will no longer trade in lockstep — a win for active investors.

The rotation trade likely won't save the S & P 500 from a double-digit correction ahead, according to Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at CFRA Research. On the other hand, the mega-cap tech stocks have faltered. But Stovall is skeptical, saying he anticipates an S & P 500 pullback ahead, possibly in September, in the low double-digits. Expensive valuations Central to the strategist's concern is the overbought nature of large-cap tech stocks. Rotate into very attractive mid- and small-cap stocks or mid- and small-cap ETFs," Stovall said.

Last Thursday, 87% of S & P 500 stocks outperformed the index itself, which Goldman Sachs called "the most in the history of our data set." Its total gain of 57%, measured by the S & P 500, is almost exactly half the post-1929 average too. For good measure, this year the S & P 500 has posted the best-ever start to a presidential election year. Arguably something close to it is already priced in to a considerable degree, with the S & P 500 pushing 22-times forward earnings again. The elevated sentiment backdrop is par for the course for a bull market, but sometimes associated with pauses or pullbacks.
