Dell shares fall on light forecast despite growing AI sales
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( Kif Leswing | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +3 min
Dell Technologies forecast fourth-quarter revenue and earnings below Wall Street expectations on Tuesday, despite bullish commentary from the company on AI sales growth. It said it expected $2.50 in adjusted earnings per share, versus expectations of $2.65 per share. Dell's AI server sales are reported in the company's Infrastructure Solutions Group (ISG), which includes AI servers, storage, networking components, and traditional servers. The strongest part of Dell's ISG business was its Servers and Networking subsidiary, which includes AI systems. The overall ISG unit is more profitable, thanks to sales of pricier AI systems.

Ann Wang | ReutersThis report is from today's CNBC Daily Open, our international markets newsletter. CNBC Daily Open brings investors up to speed on everything they need to know, no matter where they are. Even though Nvidia's third-quarter revenue soared 94% on an annual basis, it's a slower pace than Nvidia's growth in the previous three quarters, when sales rose 122%, 262%, and 265%, respectively, as CNBC's Kif Leswing notes. The same goes for Nvidia's forward guidance: A growth of around 70% for current-quarter sales, compared with a year earlier. It appears that investors have enjoyed Nvidia's astounding performance for so long they've become desensitized to it.

Those hopes fall on Blackwell, which is Nvidia's name for a family of server products based around its next-generation AI chip. Some of Nvidia's most important end-customers have already received some Blackwell chips, the company confirmed on Wednesday. "We will we'll ship more Blackwells next quarter than this [quarter], and we'll ship more Blackwells the quarter after that than than our first quarter," Huang said. A limiting factor to producing more Blackwell systems is the amount of components that Nvidia's suppliers can provide, Huang said. As Blackwell rolls out, Nvidia's current AI chips, which it calls Hopper, will be relegated to serving AI models, not creating new ones.

Future growth will have to come from Blackwell, its next-generation chip that has just started shipping to end-users such as Microsoft , Google and OpenAI. More important than Nvidia's third-quarter results will be what the company says about demand for the Blackwell chip. In August, Nvidia said it expected about "several billion" in Blackwell sales during the January quarter. Nvidia reported 122% growth in sales in the most-recent quarter. That was lower than the 262% year-over-year growth it reported in the April quarter and the 265% growth in the January quarter.

Of that amount, roughly $4 billion will come from PC chips, Qualcomm said at its investor day on Tuesday. The chipmaker just introduced PC processors earlier this year, when it released Snapdragon X for Windows devices. In fiscal 2024, Qualcomm's handset business reported $24.86 billion in sales, about 75% of its entire chip business. Another $4 billion in revenue will come from industrial chips and $2 billion will come from chips for headsets, a category Qualcomm calls XR. But the company has warned investors that Apple could choose to stop buying Qualcomm parts as soon as 2027.

Apple CEO Tim Cook (C) joins customers during Apple's iPhone 16 launch in New York on September 20, 2024. Apple's second-largest division after the iPhone has turned into a $100 billion a year business that Wall Street loves. In Apple's earnings report on Thursday, the company said it reached just under $25 billion in services revenue, an all-time high for the category, and 12% growth on an annual basis. Apple's services unit has become a critical part of Apple's appeal to investors over the past decade. Apple on Wednesday introduced new MacBook Pro laptops with updated processors, in what is likely the company's last major hardware announcement of the year. Apple says the new chips are 1.8 times faster than the M1, which powered Apple's 2021 MacBook Pro. Additionally, all of the new MacBook Pro models come with at least 16GB of RAM. The more memory a computer has, the more it is capable of handling larger and more sophisticated AI models. Doubling the RAM on its laptops represents the most significant change Apple has made to its lineup of computers to better support Apple Intelligence.

Apple announced on Tuesday new Mac Mini models, featuring the first major redesign since 2010 that makes the desktop computer significantly smaller. The Mac Mini is Apple's least-expensive Mac, starting at $599, and does not include a display, which is sold separately. The Mac Mini is not one of Apple's highest-volume computers in terms of sales, but it is an important slot in Apple's lineup, especially for people who make apps for iPhones and other Apple platforms. Many iPhone developers like to run a Mac Mini as a personal development server for coordinating uploads and code. One improvement in the new design is that all of the ports are USB-C ports, the same more modern offering found on Apple's laptops.

AMD's AI chips are reported in its data center segment, which more than doubled on an annual basis to $3.5 billion in total sales. Overall data center revenue was up 122% year over year. AMD's gross margin expanded to 54%, which the company said was because of higher data center revenue.
