Still, the Biden campaign has boasted record-breaking grassroots fundraising. On Friday, Vice President Kamala Harris joined a call with donors amid ongoing party panic. The vice president was asked to do the call by the West Wing, according to campaign officials. Harris’ aides have repeatedly stressed that there’s no daylight between the vice president and the president, and she maintained her defense of Biden on Friday. “He will be doing big fundraisers and focusing on continuing to bolster grassroots fundraising,” Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz said on MSNBC on Saturday.

“His last act will not be getting knocked down,” said one longtime Biden 2020 campaign aide of the family and the inner circle. They loved saying in 2020 that Joe Biden won because the party, and not the pundits. Some have already “quiet quit,” going through the motions until Joe Biden gets to the end that many of them now believe is inevitable. It feels like if he could go to Congress and make a rousing speech, he would,” said one Democratic operative involved with the campaign. “Here in HQ, we’re working really hard because on winning campaigns, you work really hard,” said Biden campaign spokesman Kevin Munoz.

Deputy White House chief of staff Annie Tomasini, a longtime aide to the Bidens, joins Donilon and Ricchetti in forming a protective bubble around the president. “The phones just kind of stopped ringing,” is how one senior Democrat put it. “Staff in general are just over the leadership here,” one White House official said. Inside the White House, senior administration officials are bracing for Republicans to call for Biden to resign the presidency if he doesn’t seek reelection. With Biden’s political future on the brink, the White House is fielding a steady stream of letters, telephone calls and message from Americans, too, from Democratic voters like Terri and John Hale.

Our campaign is not working through any scenarios where President Biden is not the top of the ticket. The delay stopped a draft letter circulating among House Democrats that, if made formal, would have exposed further cracks in the party. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer both pushed the DNC to delay the process, multiple sources told CNN. “The private conversations with the Hill are continuing,” a senior Democratic adviser told CNN, speaking on condition of anonymity to avoid alienating the campaign and the White House. The Biden campaign, which is also facing a growing outcry from Democratic donors, dismissed the suggestion the president was rethinking his candidacy. “If the facts matter – and they should – here is one: President Biden is the Democratic nominee and he is going to win this November,” Kevin Munoz, a Biden spokesman, told CNN. The developments come at a crucial time for the Biden campaign. ABC News’ Jonathan Karl reported earlier Wednesday that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told Biden on Saturday that it would be best if Biden bowed out of the presidential race.

Read previewSen. Michael Bennet of Colorado came closer than any other Democratic senator has yet to calling for President Joe Biden to bow out of the presidential race. Bennet told Collins he was there to confirm publicly that he doesn't think Biden can win. "Donald Trump is on track, I think, to win the election, and maybe win it by a landslide, and take with him the Senate and the House," Bennet said. In a statement provided to Business Insider, Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz defended the president's commitment to beating Trump in November. The campaign also noted the many expressions of support Biden has received from House and Senate Democrats since the debate.

CNN —Sen. Michael Bennet on Tuesday became the first Democratic senator to publicly say he doesn’t believe President Joe Biden is capable of winning reelection after his disastrous debate performance last month. Bennet said his voters have “deep concerns” about whether Biden can win and urged the White House to not ignore worries about his viability. Bennet’s comments confirm earlier CNN reporting that Bennet told his colleagues during a private meeting between Senate Democrats Tuesday that he does not think Biden can win. Sherrod Brown and Jon Tester also said Biden would not win during the meeting in the Capitol, according to a source familiar. Another source confirmed that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer told senators at the meeting they should speak with the White House directly.

CNN —Amid the ongoing fallout from Joe Biden’s debate performance, talk in many top Democratic circles has already moved to who Kamala Harris’ running mate would be. A more open race, these top Democrats hope, would be for Harris’ running mate, with a focus on leading Democratic governors. “President Biden is our nominee, Vice President Harris is our running mate, and we will win this November,” he said. The anti-Trump coalition cannot afford to discount the strengths of the nominated Democratic running mate and current vice president. Harris’ answer: She’d turn around and say to him, “Why are you being so weird?”As vice president, Harris has tended to be known more for her word salads than sharp elbows like that.

Mr. Biden told a Milwaukee radio station in an interview made public Wednesday that he had “a bad night.” In the prerecorded interview with the radio host Earl Ingram, Mr. Biden added, “The fact of the matter is that I screwed up. The latest effort by the White House to quell the controversy is already disintegrating. His reasoning frustrated several governors who’d come to the White House to seek reassurance about Biden’s condition, sources said. “I’m not going anywhere,” Biden told military families gathered to watch July Fourth fireworks at the White House. And on Thursday, the presumptive GOP nominee offered to debate Biden one-on-one with without moderators. The increasingly unpromising state of the Biden campaign has many Democrats worried — one reason the ABC News interview and a scheduled press conference at the NATO summit in Washington next week will be so crucial.

Democrat candidate, U.S. President Joe Biden, and Republican candidate, former U.S. President Donald Trump, attend a presidential debate in Atlanta, Georgia, U.S., June 27, 2024. "Yes, it was a bad performance," South Carolina's Democratic Rep. Jim Clyburn, a close Biden ally, said on CNN's "State of the Union." Biden and Trump are scheduled for a second debate on Sept. 10, though it is unclear whether both candidates will follow through. In the meantime, the Biden campaign has been raking in large fundraising hauls in the wake of the debate. As of Sunday morning, the campaign had raised $33 million since Thursday, $26 million of which came from grassroots donors, according to Biden campaign spokesperson Kevin Munoz.

The flurry of events signals a new phase of the campaign for Trump with his New York case now largely behind him. No longer tethered to a Manhattan courtroom during the week, Trump is expected to ramp up his activity as he pivots from the trial to the trail. But as he steps back onto the campaign trail as a convicted felon, the urgency for Trump has crystalized. Trump himself has also threatened his political opponents, continuing the retaliatory rhetoric that has permeated from his campaign since the onset. “They know Joe Biden can’t beat him in a fair fight, so they’ve disgracefully weaponized the justice system.”The Trump campaign, though, is not concerned Trump will muddy the message on immigration by focusing on his legal battles.

This time around, he believes at least one thing is different: Biden can’t win through voters’ fear of Trump alone. Here in Michigan, which the president visited Thursday, rests one of the biggest tests of his campaign. Washington CNN —Young voters played a critical role in helping elect President Joe Biden to the White House. For instance, last year, Biden signed the Inflation Reduction Act into law, which includes key provisions to reduce carbon emissions. Biden will also have to make the case to young voters over what he’s accomplished in his foreign policy, Hall said. But some progressive groups say that if they do not see more things accomplished on these domestic issues, it could result in low voter turnout among young voters and voters of color. Simon Rosenberg, a veteran Democratic strategist, said there is currently a vast divide between the president and young voters.

A spokesman for the Biden campaign called the election “deeply consequential for young people,” and pledged to build on a strong turnout from younger voters in the 2022 midterm elections. Trump, his party's frontrunner for the 2024 nomination as he seeks to regain the presidency, leads in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania, with Biden ahead in Wisconsin, Sunday's results showed. Biden defeated Trump in all six states in 2020, but Trump now leads by an average of 48% to 44% in those states, the polls showed. THE TAKEWhile polls assessing the national popular vote have consistently showed Biden and Trump in a close race, presidential elections typically are decided by the outcomes in a handful of so-called swing states. Biden's victories in Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin - all swing states that Trump carried in 2016 - were instrumental in his 2020 victory. Biden likely would need to carry many of those states again to win re-election.

Trump also tops Biden in Georgia, a state that was central to his ploy to overturn the last presidential election, with 49% to Biden’s 43%. White House officials on Sunday shrugged off weekend polling that showed President Biden trailing former President Donald J. Trump, even as Democrats said they were increasingly worried about Mr. Biden’s chances in 2024. The new polling from The New York Times and Siena College found Mr. Biden losing in one-on-one matchups with former President Donald J. Trump in five critical swing states: Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada and Pennsylvania. Mr. Biden is ahead by two percentage points in Wisconsin. Although the polling is worrisome for the president, Mr. Biden still has a year to campaign, which his team emphasized on Sunday. “Gallup predicted an eight-point loss for President Obama only for him to win handily a year later,” said Kevin Munoz, a spokesman for Mr. Biden’s campaign.
