A defamation case against Kari Lake brought by Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer has been settled, representatives for both parties confirmed Sunday to NBC News. Richer, a Republican, filed a claim in June 2023 saying that Lake falsely accused him of "intentionally sabotaging the election" after she lost the 2022 Arizona governor's race. Richer sought nominal, compensatory and punitive damages in unspecified amounts. "We are pleased" the case has been settled, Lake’s lawyer Dennis Wilenchik said, noting that the settlement's terms "are confidential." After the election, Lake falsely accused Richer of having "sabotaged" Election Day.

Arizona voters approved a controversial ballot measure that will give state and local law enforcement greater authority to enforce immigration-related laws typically left to the federal government, NBC News projects. The lengthy ballot measure makes a number of changes to state law related to immigration. The measure also requires a court to kick out migrants convicted of illegal entry, allowing state and local law enforcement to deliver them to federal custody. While the ballot measure’s supporters have long argued for the need to make immigration law stricter, Republicans also hoped that the measure could help boost GOP turnout. And Arizona’s controversial attempt to enact stricter immigration laws in 2010 was partially blocked by the Supreme Court in part because the court found that federal immigration law pre-empted much of the legislation.

Arizona voters on Tuesday approved an amendment enshrining abortion rights in the state constitution, NBC News projects. A fundamental right to abortion is part of the Arizona Constitution once and for all. In April, the conservative-leaning Arizona Supreme Court ruled to reinstate a near-total ban on abortion from 1864. Arizona for Abortion Access, the coalition of reproductive rights organizations behind the ballot effort, had shattered the record for the number of valid signatures gathered for a ballot initiative in the state. Constitutional amendments to enshrine abortion rights were on the general election ballots in nine other states Tuesday: Colorado, Florida, Maryland, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York and South Dakota.

He sat down with BI to talk about the race, the national debt, abortion, and the state of his party. In an era where college-educated voters have been bleeding out of the GOP, Schweikert is increasingly an outlier, and he knows it. In order to keep looking like his district, Schweikert — a one-time conservative rabble-rouser who rode his way into Congress during the 2010 Tea Party wave — has had to make some changes. But now that Schweikert's sharing the ballot with Trump, he's not sweating that either. But while Democrats are hoping the state-level vote will boost turnout on their side and remind voters of Republicans' opposition to abortion, Schweikert sees it differently.

PHOENIX — Republican Kari Lake and Democratic Rep. Ruben Gallego faced off in Arizona’s feisty first and only Senate debate Wednesday evening, trading shots over the border, abortion, tax policy and more. Lake has long made the border a cornerstone of her campaign, chastising Gallego for supporting the Biden-Harris administration’s immigration policies. Gallego, in turn, has made the bipartisan border bill that Trump and Lake opposed a big part of his campaign. “He acts like he cares about us,” Lake said of Gallego, “speaking directly to the women” watching the debate. The success of so many 2020 election deniers in Republican primaries this year demonstrates that Trump’s ongoing campaign of election lies continues to have a strong hold on his party. Even four years later, candidates’ views on the 2020 election are relevant in important practical ways. Lake also baselessly advocated the imprisonment of Katie Hobbs, who was Arizona’s election chief during the 2020 election and went on to defeat Lake in the 2022 race for governor. A Democratic group is launching a legal fund to help secretaries of state in key states defend against an anticipated post-election deluge of lawsuits. The group began aggressively raising money and campaigning to elect Democratic secretaries of state, who oversee elections in many states, in the wake of former President Donald Trump's false claims of voter fraud in 2020. It first funneled money to deal with postelection litigation to then-Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs in 2022 to deal with postelection litigation. “We have a bunch of pro-democracy secretaries of state that we want to support. The initial four states were chosen in part because the group believes state laws will allow it to effectively send money to boost the secretaries of state.

Election observers worry that delays in counting mail ballots could give the public a false sense of who’s winning the election. In Wisconsin and Pennsylvania, election officials are still barred from beginning to process mail ballots before 7 a.m. on Election Day – even though election workers in both states have clamored for change. Georgia's State Election Board members discuss proposals for election rule changes at the State Capitol in Atlanta on September 20, 2024. The new law could delay by an hour or more – depending on the county – the posting of unofficial early results, state election officials have said. In Maricopa County, the general election ballot covers both sides of two pages – twice the length of the ballot voters encountered four years ago.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Battleground state election officials from both parties are pushing back against a falsehood that has proven pervasive ahead of the 2024 reaction: that noncitizens are voting in widespread numbers. The comments came as former President Donald Trump and his GOP allies have talked up efforts to crack down on noncitizens voting, which is already illegal. Maricopa County has sued seeking clarity on whether those voters can vote in state and local elections this fall. Republicans at the national and state level have fueled unfounded noncitizen voting claims in the run-up to this year's presidential election. Election officials said Thursday they were taking steps to debunk conspiracy theories ahead of the 2024 election.

A top election official in Arizona said he would file a suit Tuesday that could bar almost 100,000 residents from voting in state and local races this fall, claiming they have not provided citizenship documents required under state law. The planned suit from Maricopa County Recorder Stephen Richer is related to a specific part of Arizona election law that requires residents to provide documents that prove citizenship to vote in state and local elections. Such documents are not required for Arizona residents to register to vote or cast a ballot in federal elections. Since 1996, Arizona has required residents to provide proof of citizenship to obtain a driver’s license. Hobbs said her office would implement "an independent audit to ensure that MVD systems are functioning as necessary to support voter registration."

The group most directly affected by restrictions on abortion — women of reproductive age — are broadly against them, new survey results have found. Nearly half of Republican women of reproductive age said abortion should be legal in most or all cases. The report released Wednesday focuses more narrowly on how women of reproductive age view abortion, based on 3,900 responses. KFF’s survey results in Florida suggest that 72% of reproductive-age women there think abortion should be legal, including roughly half of Republican women. Frederiksen said her research shows that many women are unaware of or misinformed about their states’ abortion landscapes.

AdvertisementTrump can't take Arizona for grantedBefore Biden won Arizona in 2020, it last voted for a Democratic presidential nominee in 1996. AdvertisementHowever, for Trump, a Harris win in Arizona would be a huge blow in his attempts to win a second term. Biden's 2020 victories in Arizona, Georgia, and Nevada — as well as his wins in Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin — effectively cut off Trump's path to victory that year. Should Harris neutralize the border security issue — a feat that seemed unimaginable when Biden was still the presumptive nominee — it'll give her a major opening to win Arizona.

The state’s GOP Senate candidate, Kari Lake, has long challenged her Democratic competitor, Rep. Ruben Gallego, to take the debate stage. Hobbs still did not agree to the Arizona Clean Elections proposal for a traditional debate, saying Lake would create a "spectacle." Hobbs then participated in a separate Q&A with Arizona PBS, which has no affiliation with Arizona Clean Elections. Given Hobbs’ Q&A was not affiliated with Arizona Clean Elections, the organization’s executive director says Lake’s frustration is misplaced. “Traditionally, for the last, I think, three Senate races, every Senate debate has happened at the Clean Elections debate,” Gallego said last week.

While Michigan, Washington, Minnesota, Texas and California already had laws regulating deepfakes, Minnesota updated their law this year to require a candidate to forfeit their office or nomination if they violate the state’s deepfake laws, among other provisions. In states such as New York, New Mexico and Alabama, victims can seek a court order to stop the content. Katie Hobbs signed his proposal into law in May, along with another AI bill that requires disclosures in campaign ads. Big Tech has already taken some steps to moderate deepfake content. TikTok and Meta (the parent company of Instagram, Threads and Facebook) announced plans in recent months to label AI content, while YouTube requires creators to disclose when videos are AI-created.

With Harris at the top of the ticket, Democrats now see a chance to refocus voters on the issue and restore their margins among the abortion rights voters who had notably drifted away from Biden. In both the 2020 and 2022 campaigns, voters who backed legal abortion provided overwhelming support to Biden and other Democratic candidates. Across all of those battleground states, Biden this year was performing well below that level with voters who support legal abortion, polls have found. Those abortion rights voters also split about evenly on whether Biden or Trump was better for the economy. “Many of them aren’t single issue abortion voters; they are worried about the economy and inflation, they are worried about immigration,” McLaughlin said.

CNN —With President Joe Biden’s support unleashing a flood of endorsements from many prominent Democrats across the country, Kamala Harris has emerged as the favorite to take his place as the party’s nominee for president. The campaign formally amended filings with the Federal Election Commission to rename its principal committee and declare Harris a candidate for president. Cooper previously waved off speculation that he might be on the shortlist for vice presidential nominees if Biden steps aside and Harris becomes the nominee. “Are you at least open to the possibility of being a running mate to Vice President Harris?,” Beshear was asked on MSNBC Monday morning. “I’m not going anywhere.”Whitmer, first elected governor in 2018, emerged as a prominent executive during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“2024 is the first American presidential election year at this intersection of election-related mis- and disinformation and the rapid growth of AI generated content. Misinformation spread rapidly through Pennsylvania during the 2020 election as the swing state faced baseless allegations about voting in Pennsylvania, perceived unfairness toward Republican poll-watchers and violations of election rules. Sabir said the misinformation fighting efforts will target voters where they are, including social media, billboards and radio ads. Fontes was recognized in May for his office’s work creating election security tabletop training exercises aimed to protect the state’s election infrastructure. Bellamy said it’s critical to fight misinformation going into this election, and elections are gaining a lot of negative attention.
