Republican presidential nominee and former U.S. President Donald Trump and Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) react during a campaign event at Dorton Arena, in Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S. November 4, 2024. Jonathan Drake | ReutersPresident-elect Donald Trump's choice of Sen. Marco Rubio as his secretary of State, arguably the world's most important diplomat, could change the dial when it comes to the U.S.' relationship with both its enemies and its allies. You know, adversaries are uniting — in North Korea, Iran, China, Russia — [and] increasingly coordinating," Rubio said. US Senator Marco Rubio speaks during a campaign rally for former US President and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump in Doral, Florida, on July 9, 2024. And I think that's what [former President] Donald Trump is trying to say," Rubio said.

On one level, Trump’s comment shows how his false election fraud claims have entered the outer realms of absurdity. The election fraud claims that Trump most notably supercharged in 2020 to salve his humiliation at losing to Joe Biden are already at high intensity this year. After laying out the darkest closing argument in modern American history, Trump is now increasingly turning to poisoning public confidence in the election. Gore conceded that election, thereby guaranteeing an uncontested transfer of presidential power — a step Trump refused to take four years ago. Just 30% of registered voters think Trump would accept the results of the election and concede if he loses, while 73% say that Harris would accept an election loss.

The 2024 presidential election, explained

For Democrats, President Joe Biden dominated the primaries and faced only token opposition. Vice President Kamala Harris speaks as former President Donald Trump listens during a presidential debate at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on September 10, 2024. Trump was accused by the Justice Department of election interference after he tried to overturn the 2020 election results. The most populous states are California (54 electoral votes), Texas (40 electoral votes) and Florida (30 electoral votes). The total number of electoral votes, 538, is an even number, which means a tie is conceivable.

Unlike with the hurricane rumor response page, FEMA did not appear to respond to the rumors on its page for the wildfires. By 2009, Alex Jones, perhaps one of the most widely known modern conspiracy theorists, was promoting the false FEMA camps conspiracy theory and deriding those who attempted to debunk it. The FEMA camps conspiracy theory continued throughout the height of the pandemic after President Joe Biden signed various executive orders regarding vaccinations and testing. Ron DeSantis said the plan was “not necessary” and referred to the vaccination sites as “FEMA camps.”Although the FEMA camp conspiracy theory has been shot down again and again, Aniano believes this won’t be the last of it. “The conspiracy theory, it’s going to come up again,” Aniano said.

Why nobody knows who will win the 2024 election

CNN —Almost two weeks to Election Day, I feel more uncertain about this year’s result than any election I’ve covered professionally. Many Republicans are hoping that the close polling points to a blowout win for Trump next month. If we had a polling miss like two years ago, Harris would probably win over 300 electoral votes. Jonathan Drake/ReutersYou might be tempted to guess the direction of a potential polling miss by the macro trends. Ironically, only 24% of those undecided voters agree that this election is the most important of their lifetime.

CNN —Long before the outer bands of Hurricane Milton lashed the Florida coast, a political battle over the massive storm was already raging. This time, partly because Trump pushed so hard to exploit last week’s Hurricane Helene for his political gain, the sparring has started early. A storm of this size could give Trump a political openingTrump has repeatedly shown there’s no situation he will not try to leverage for political gain. “I’ve had storms under both President Trump and President Biden, and I’ve worked well with both of them. Unlike Harris, Biden had kinder words for DeSantis, saying on Tuesday that the governor had been “cooperative.”“I said no, ‘You’re doing a great job, it’s all being done well, we thank you for it,’” Biden said.

The drop in Trump's small-dollar contributors could be significant obstacle as the former president faces the well-funded incumbent president, Democrat Joe Biden. Falling behind BidenEvidence from earlier in the 2024 election cycle already hinted at an erosion of Trump's small-dollar donor base, or support of $200 or less. In January of this year, Trump's campaign reported raising around $3 million from small-dollar donors, according to data from OpenSecrets. Elizabeth Frantz | ReutersMeanwhile, Trump's campaign told The New York Times that February was its strongest month so far in the 2024 campaign cycle for small-dollar donations. Between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2020, Trump's campaign raised over $264 million from small-dollar supporters.

A national committee is typically overhauled after the party has a de facto or official presidential nominee. The changes normally come in the form of a new chairperson or a top official from the presidential campaign moving over to the committee. These resources are critical to Trump’s campaign as it makes plans to build out teams in key battleground states such as Michigan, Georgia, Arizona and Pennsylvania in the coming weeks and months. “The Republican National Committee will be focused like a laser on getting out the vote and protecting the ballot,” Whatley said in his remarks Friday. Trump’s senior advisers, including LaCivita, insist they have no plans to use the RNC to help pay his legal expenses.

REUTERS/Jonathan Drake/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsAug 25 (Reuters) - A Texas judge on Friday blocked a Republican-backed state law banning so-called gender-affirming care including puberty blockers, hormones and surgery for transgender minors from taking effect while she hears a legal challenge to it. Texas Governor Greg Abbott, a Republican, signed the law in June, making Texas one of at least 20 states to ban gender-affirming care. The offices of Abbott and Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Mainstream U.S. medical groups including the American Medical Association, the American Psychological Association and the American Academy of Pediatrics oppose the measure and maintain that gender-affirming care improves transgender patients' mental health and reduces risk of suicide. Several other similar state laws have been blocked by judges, though a federal appeals court this week revived Alabama's ban on gender-affirming care for minors.
