Chuck Scarborough, the broadcaster who for 50 years brought New Yorkers news of blizzards, financial collapses, terror attacks and assassinations, said Thursday that he would step down from his anchoring duties at WNBC. “The time has come to pass the torch,” Mr. Scarborough said at the end of the 6 p.m. newscast. “Fifty years, eight months and 17 days after I walked into the door here at the headquarters of the National Broadcasting Company, I will step away from this anchor desk.”Mr. Scarborough, 81, said his last broadcast as anchor will be on Dec. 12. CNN —The Beatles earned their first Grammy nominations since 1997 on Friday. The iconic rock group was also recognized in the best rock performance category for the track. This year’s nods for “Now and Then” marks the first Beatles nominations since the late ’90s, when they won three Grammys in 1997. However, the Beatles aren’t the only classic rock ‘n rollers from that era to appear on this year’s list of Grammy nominees. They earned their first nod in 1978 for “Some Girls,” which was recognized for album of the year at the time.

If you're living and working abroad and still need to file 2023 taxes, the deadline is only one week away. While the regular tax deadline was April 15 for most taxpayers, there's an automatic two-month extension to June 17 for those U.S. citizens and resident aliens, including dual citizens, who live outside the country. There are two ways to qualify for the June 17 deadline, according to the IRS. You must live outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico or serve in the military outside the country during the regular tax deadline. A recently discovered guitar that John Lennon used to record multiple Beatles songs in the 1960s before it went missing for 50 years has sold at auction for $2.9 million, becoming one of the most valuable pieces of memorabilia from the band. Later that year, Mr. Lennon gifted the 1964 guitar, made by the German instrument manufacturer Framus, to Gordon Waller, a member of the British pop duo Peter & Gordon. Mr. Waller passed it on to one of his road managers, who took the guitar to his home in the rural British countryside and tossed it in the attic, the auction house said. More than 50 years later, a man in Britain discovered the guitar in his parents’ attic as they were moving out of the house, Darren Julien, a co-founder of Julien Auctions, said in a video. After they found it — along with its original guitar case — they alerted the auction house in March, Mr. Julien said.

The Ingredient That Unites My Favorite Salads

I cleared those plates, tempted every time to sneak a rehydrating taste when there were leftovers. On my last day, the managers said I could order anything I wanted: I sat at a table, a diner for the first time, and ordered the salad. The salads of my youth, the ones I most remember, all have this effect — and they all have cheese. The contrast between cool, anchoring base note (fruit, vegetable or lettuce) and salty, creamy accent (cheese) is what makes a bite of these salads feel like more than just salad. The day I interviewed for my first food-writing job, even before getting the offer, I celebrated with a glass of rosé and a Caesar salad.

Paul McCartney has added another feather in his cap as the United Kingdom’s first billionaire musician, the Sunday Times reported in the 2024 edition of its annual Rich List, published Friday. According to the Times, the 81-year-old Beatles alum and his wife Nancy are worth £1 billion ($1.3 billion), up from £950 million ($1.2 billion) in 2023. Beyoncé earlier this year released her hit album “Cowboy Carter,” in which she reimagined the Beatles’ 1968 song “Blackbird,” originally written by McCartney. McCartney has released some music of his own over the past year: Last November, the Beatles released the chart-topping “Now and Then,” advertised as the group’s final song. McCartney famously sang that he doesn’t care too much for money, but the new album’s release is expected to give the rock star’s net worth another boost.

It was the first New York City home they owned, shortly after the breakup of the Beatles. In the fall of 1971 — two years before moving to the famed Dakota apartment house on the Upper West Side — John Lennon and Yoko Ono had settled downtown, buying a petite loft-style building at 496 Broome Street in SoHo. At the time, Lennon had just released his second solo studio album, “Imagine.”Upon relocating to New York, Lennon began forging his own identity with Ms. Ono, an avant-garde artist, musician and peace activist, while publicly distancing himself from his former bandmate Paul McCartney, with whom he had created some of the 20th century’s most popular songs.

CNN —The tragic arc of Amy Winehouse’s brief life and nova-like career creates built-in problems for a biography of the singer, which doesn’t dampen the knockout performance by Marisa Abela in “Back to Black,” capturing the talent, rage and self-destructiveness that defined her. Thin as biopics go, the power of Abela’s portrayal elevates the film, providing a poignance and strength that’s the clearest motivation to go, go, go. Then again, as constructed here, the two went hand in hand, with the lyrics to songs like “Back to Black” and “Rehab” directly addressing her addictions to her relationship with Blake and alcohol. In terms of capturing what animated Winehouse, the blinding star power that Abela emits here ultimately justifies the exercise. “Back to Black” premieres May 17 in US theaters.

Larry Busacca/Getty ImagesWhen "Speak Now" was released, Swift wasn't shy about framing the album as a diary set to music. "Every single song is like a roadmap to what that relationship stood for, with little markers that maybe everyone won't know, but there are things that were little nuances of the relationship, little hints. And every single song is like that." "Dear John" is the most obvious example, likely owing its title to Swift's ex John Mayer (though it also doubles as a reference to a wartime breakup letter, historically sent from a woman to a soldier). Indeed, the tabloid fodder attached to "Dear John" may have threatened to eclipse the song's power, had 20-year-old Swift been a less capable songwriter.

CNN —A 12-string guitar played by Beatles stars John Lennon and George Harrison and thought to have been lost for almost 60 years is going up for auction. The acoustic Framus “Hootenanny” was used by the band in 1965, featuring in recordings, sessions and performances of songs including “Help!” “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” and “It’s Only Love,” according to California-based auction house Julien’s Auctions. After that, Lennon gave the guitar to a friend, who passed it on to someone “who took the guitar home, tossed it in the attic, and gave it nary a thought for decades,” the auction house said in a statement published Wednesday. “It has some distinctive markings which made it easily identifiable,” said the auction house, but “the real proof is in the sound.”Lennon pictured in December 1963. London CNN —A rarely seen 1970 film following the Beatles just before the band’s breakup will be released on Disney+ after being restored by Hollywood director Peter Jackson, the streaming service announced Tuesday. Jackson, who also made the award-winning 2021 docuseries “The Beatles: Get Back” for Disney+, has carried out a “meticulous restoration” of the film as well as “lovingly remastering the sound,” according to the statement. “One month before its release, The Beatles officially broke up. And so the people went to see ‘Let It Be’ with sadness in their hearts, thinking, ‘I’ll never see The Beatles together again. I will never have that joy again,’ and it very much darkened the perception of the film,” he said in the statement.

John Sinclair, a counterculture activist whose nearly 10-year prison sentence for sharing joints with an undercover police officer was cut short after John Lennon and Yoko Ono sang about his plight at a protest rally, died on Tuesday in Detroit. His publicist, Matt Lee, said the cause of his death, in a hospital, was congestive heart failure. As the leader of the White Panther Party in the late 1960s, Mr. Sinclair spoke of assembling a “guitar army” to wage “total assault” on racists, capitalism and the criminalization of marijuana. “We are a whole new people with a whole new vision of the world,” he wrote in his book “Guitar Army” (1972), “a vision which is diametrically opposed to the blind greed and control which have driven our immediate predecessors in Euro-Amerika to try to gobble up the whole planet and turn it into one big supermarket.”He also managed the incendiary Detroit rock band the MC5. Their lyrics — “I’m sick and tired of paying these dues/And I’m finally getting hip to the American ruse” — were a kind of ballad for the cause.
