The euro has declined rapidly, meanwhile, briefly dipping below $1.05 on Nov. 14 for the first time since October 2023. Modeling by Barclays' economists shows the euro hitting dollar parity with a 10% tariff on European products and subsequent retaliation. The bank said the prospect of Trump tariffs and fiscal reforms had caused it to revise its view that the dollar would gradually decline through the year, instead seeing the U.S. currency "stronger for longer." Since hitting a low in September 2022, the euro has been comfortably back above parity even if below its long-range average. One of those 2022 factors roared back into focus this week, weighing broadly on European assets: the threat of escalating tensions with Russia.

Still, investors don’t appear to be letting their jitters get to them — at least not entirely. “Valuations at the market level and individual stock level are always the key to long-term performance. You may have a lot of noise in the short term, but for long-term investors, it’s always going to be all about valuation,” he said. An election year analysis from Danny Noonan at Morningstar Wealth found that investors are significantly better off in the long run if they ignore politics. For investors, that suggests the best strategy may be to keep calm, trade on — and leave the politics at the polling place.

The outcome of upcoming elections in the world's leading economy is set to ripple into global markets no matter who clinches leadership of the White House, UBS head Sergio Ermotti told CNBC on Wednesday. "We do expect, no matter who wins and the outcome, we do expect some market movements. Markets are bracing as voters flock to the polls on Nov. 5, with the U.S. holding both the world's foremost reserve currency and the largest stock exchange by market capitalization. Under a [Donald] Trump presidency, we see that as being inflationary on the back of his focus on immigration and on tariffs. But we don't see any outcome as being particularly growth positive.

The Conference Board’s latest consumer survey showed that Americans this month became more optimistic about the future of both the labor market and the broader US economy. The monthly survey’s Consumer Confidence Index jumped in October by the fastest clip since March 2021. In September, jitters over the job market’s health weighed on consumer confidence, but economic data after that showed that the job market remains solid. “Views on the current availability of jobs rebounded after several months of weakness, potentially reflecting better labor market data,” Peterson said. Data for September pointed to a robust job market, which translated into better consumer confidence.

The anxiety abated for a bit when Vice President Kamala Harris replaced him on the ticket and her poll numbers spiked. With Harris' numbers stagnant now for weeks, many Democrats are once again fretting that the election is slipping away and that Donald Trump may yet regain power. Harris appears to be OK with the collective jitters, recognizing that if Democrats fear they might lose, they're more apt to show up at the polls and help her win. Polling shows that neither Harris nor Trump has built a lead outside the margin of error. Claims that Harris is an underdog amount to “a liberal plot to get us overconfident on the Trump side,” he added.

I felt a tremendous sense of guilt when my mother unexpectedly died on Christmas Eve in 2004 at the young age of 48. I think some of it stems from the guilt I've felt over her death. "But it's not a given that if your mom or dad died young, you're definitely going to die young." "Guilt is there because our culture does not provide children, especially young ones, with the reason why their parents died," she explains. Soon, she says, I will begin to realize that just because my mother died young doesn't mean I will, too.

In that war, Israel rained bombs on southern Lebanon and Beirut, the capital; the fighting killed more than 1,000 Lebanese. Even some of Hezbollah’s traditionally loyal Shiite Muslim constituents in southern Lebanon are questioning the price of the current fighting. Goldman Sachs suspects that a reversal is coming as mid-cap earnings top those of large caps. And while small caps should post even higher earnings growth next year, that cohort is filled with unprofitable companies, Ma noted. "Low-quality segments of the market, such as small caps, will likely remain pressured at these levels due to weak balance sheets and low profitability." Below are 25 mid-cap stocks in the S&P 400 that Goldman Sachs spotlighted due to their solid balance sheets, double-digit expected earnings growth for 2025, above-average sales growth, and cheap valuations based on their forward earnings multiple versus their five-year median.
