CNN —Republican Tim Sheehy will defeat three-term Montana Sen. Jon Tester, CNN projects, adding to Republicans’ newly won Senate majority. Montana has long been a deep-red state in presidential elections — and every other statewide office is currently held by a Republican. Still, his seat – alongside Democratic-held seats in two other red states, Ohio and West Virginia – was a prime Republican target this year. One big question mark hovering over the race was a ballot measure that would enshrine the right to an abortion in Montana’s constitution. Montana Republicans have pushed and enacted a series of abortion restrictions in recent years but have seen those largely struck down as unconstitutional by state courts.

Voting has now wrapped up in all seven swing states and most others. But no swing states have been called, and the race will hinge on their results. Bomb threats roiled polling places in swing states, including Georgia, Arizona and Michigan. Though the election is by no means over, Mr. Trump is showing strength, winning states like Texas and Florida easily. Democrats will have to run the tables in the Republican states of Ohio and Montana to maintain their one-seat control of the Senate.

A Republican state senator from West Virginia is being asked to step down by his local GOP party chair after being arrested on a drunk driving charge — his second arrest in as many months. State Sen. Mike Maroney, who was first elected in 2016, was arrested in August on a charge of indecent exposure. “While the legal process must take its course, the perception of impropriety and the repeated legal entanglements surrounding Senator Maroney have brought discredit to the West Virginia Senate,” Ethan Moore, chairman of the Monongalia County Republican Executive Committee, said in a statement. While it was an asset to Biden in polling against Trump, it appears to be a much bigger advantage for Harris. And in this new NBC poll, Harris’ advantage was just under 20 points. It’s obvious at this point that Trump will win men by close to double digits, ditto with Harris among women. But many voters have seen "Vice President Kamala Harris" as a fresher candidate, including those who previously viewed Trump as a better steward of the economy. That would spell doom for Democrats' Senate majority.

Mr. Manchin has said he will not run for re-election to the Senate or for governor — a role he previously held for two terms — but rumors persist on Capitol Hill that he could change his mind. West Virginia’s deadline for independent candidates to declare their candidacies is not until Aug. 1. Since Mr. Manchin said he would not run again, Senator Chuck Schumer, Democrat of New York and the majority leader, has been pleading with him to formally leave the Democratic Party and seek re-election as an independent. If he did so, Mr. Manchin would face Jim Justice, a Democrat-turned-Republican second-term governor with whom he has a storied rivalry.
