It may be a coincidence that the celebrity look-alike competition returned to prominence just as American citizens were voting in what some called “the most significant presidential election in our lifetimes.” But once it happened, the appeal was obvious. Here was a different kind of democratic event: a totally insignificant one, in which attractive men with slightly off-kilter features were lined up in public and ranked by the roaring crowd. At the first contest, which convened a flock of Timothée Chalamet doubles in Manhattan last month, the New York Police Department showed up, deemed it an “unscheduled demonstration” and arrested four people. They are typically publicized with posters on lampposts, staged in public parks and accompanied by meager prizes. No, he’s Stuart Little, if Stuart Little was hot. “How ‘hot rodent’ men became Hollywood’s sexiest heartthrobs: Gen Z fans are going wild for actors with unusual features including Barry Keoghan, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Allen White,” read the headline. How do these men — heartthrobs of the moment, even — feel about being categorized as “hot rodents”? “It was clearly not meant as an insult and even though some people would take it as an insult, I mostly felt it was a way of saying that I was cute.”While by no means exhaustive, these responses suggest men feel mostly fine with the “hot rodent” trend.

Calvin Klein, a brand that recently made waves with an ad campaign featuring the actor Jeremy Allen White in nothing but his underwear, is getting a little more buttoned up. On Thursday, it announced it would restart its high-end Collection business under a new creative director, Veronica Leoni, along with a return to the runway — and, perhaps, to its former position as a tentpole of New York Fashion Week. Ms. Leoni will be the first named designer Calvin Klein has had in five years and the first woman to lead the house. She is one of the few women to be appointed to the top of the creative side of a major brand in the last year, when most of the big jobs have been given to white men. Calvin Klein reported 2023 revenues of $3.9 billion, a growth of only 3 percent.

Toward the end of the Calvin Klein spring 2024 video shot by Mert Alas of the actor Jeremy Allen White stripping down to his skivvies on a Manhattan roof, Mr. White collapses on a red couch for a nap. Of course, the very buff Mr. White is the primary draw for the ad campaign, which generated an estimated $12.7 million in media exposure in the 48 hours after it dropped last month and has been seen tens of millions of times on TikTok. But the red couch is attracting its share of attention, too. It’s the subject of countless memes and TikTok posts, and appeared on “The Drew Barrymore Show,” along with Fernanda Clark, a young woman who won it in a Facebook Marketplace giveaway after recounting to its owner how she had recently been widowed.
