And while the past year has been challenging, this strategy is paying off, according to Jasper Brodin, CEO of Ikea's parent company, Ingka Group. "People have the same needs, but they have much less money in their wallet," he added. AdvertisementHowever, Ikea has benefited from investing in low prices because it has attracted more shoppers away from pricier rivals. AdvertisementBecause of this, he said that Ikea customers are largely engaging in needs-based shopping, picking up the necessities first, like a new bed or kitchen table, instead of non-essential items. "There is a large stimulus package coming from the government right now, which is helping, but people have been holding on to their money," Brodin said.

The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. In San Francisco, for example, officials received 60 reports of hate crimes against Asian Americans in 2021, compared with the nine in 2020.

Hundreds of firefighters fought an intense blaze on Friday in Jasper, Alberta, as wildfires turned the picturesque town into a hell-scape of flame-licked treetops and buildings burned to ash. Two fast moving blazes attacked the town from the north and south, forcing 25,000 people to evacuate earlier in the week, and merged into one massive conflagration. The extent of the devastation remains unknown, but officials said on Thursday that firefighters were rushing to save what they could of the historic town that lies within Jasper National Park in Alberta. Officials said on Thursday they feared as much as half the town of Jasper, Alberta, had been destroyed by wildfires so intense they generated their own weather. “It’s a sad day here because Jasper is such a gorgeous place,” said Mike Flannigan, a professor of wildland fire at Thompson Rivers University in British Columbia, on Thursday. The town is the gateway to Jasper National Park, a crown jewel of the Canadian parks system. At least 25,000 residents and tourists were evacuated from their homes before firefighters and emergency personnel also had to flee toxic smoke. The mayor called the destruction “almost beyond comprehension.”That fire was worsened by a pyrocumulonimbus, or a fire-generated thunderstorm, according to Dr. Flannigan.

As much as half of a town at the heart of a jewel of Canada’s national park system has been destroyed by a pair of wildfires that roared in from two sides, an official said on Thursday. “We don’t know particularly which structures have been damaged and which ones have been destroyed, but that is going to be a significant rebuild,” Danielle Smith, the premier of Alberta, told a news conference. She struggled to avoid tears describing the beauty of Jasper National Park and the damage to the community that shares its name. Pierre Martel, the director of fire management for Parks Canada, the national parks agency, told a briefing on Thursday afternoon that the “aggressive and fast-moving fire” was still burning in the park. As the fires expanded on Monday evening, about 20,000 tourists and the 5,000 residents of Jasper were evacuated, mostly west to British Columbia.
