Jair Bolsonaro, the former president of Brazil, was one of 37 people the country’s federal police recommended for charges that include attempted coup d’état after the 2022 election that Bolsonaro lost. In a statement from Brazil's federal police, Bolsonaro and others are accused of violent abolition of the Democratic state of law, coup d’état and being a criminal organization. Once police present their report to Brazil’s Supreme Court, the office of the prosecutor general will decide whether to press charges against Bolsonaro and any former aides implicated. Senior members of Bolsonaro’s government were named by police, including his 2022 running mate, retired General Walter Braga Netto, who was defense minister, and retired General Augusto Heleno, who was national security adviser. Bolsonaro never recognized his October 2022 electoral defeat and he left Brazil days before Lula’s inauguration.

CNN —Brazilian authorities have indicted ex-president Jair Bolsonaro, accusing him of “full knowledge” of a 2022 plot to kill his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and overturn the results of the presidential election. On Thursday, Brazil’s federal police indicted 37 individuals including Bolsonaro, as part of the investigation into the fallout of the 2022 presidential elections, in which Bolsonaro’s bid for reelection was defeated, CNN Brasil reports. Police reportedly allege that Bolsonaro had “full knowledge” of a plan to prevent Lula and his government from taking office after his election victory. Earlier this week, Brazilian police arrested five people, including a former adviser to Bolsonaro, over the alleged plots. In October 2022, Lula narrowly beat Bolsonaro in the presidential election.

The arrests were the first time in the investigation that federal police have mentioned a plot to kill Lula and Geraldo Alckmin, his choice as vice-president, and stage a coup to stop him returning to power. He was in possession of the plan to kill Lula, one of the sources said. Lula won the presidential election in October 2022, defeating rightist incumbent Bolsonaro, and took office in January 2023. They also planned to seize and kill a Supreme Court justice if they succeeded, police said, without naming the judge. Others have been convicted by the Supreme Court on charges of an attempted coup, among other crimes.

The alleged plot also involved other military personnel with training in special forces, the Federal Police said. Last week, Israeli soccer fans were attacked in the streets, Palestinian flags ripped off walls and antisemitic slurs yelled during riots. But the timeline of how tensions ignited in Amsterdam is different depending on which community you ask. “It’s really so, so manipulative… It only makes everything worse,” Jaïr Stranders, a local theater director and a board member of the Liberal Jewish Community of Amsterdam told CNN. But in Amsterdam, many local Jewish officials as well as the mayor have urged against using that description. “They are Dutch youth,” he noted, adding that Amsterdam is a city of many nationalities and many values that can peacefully coexist.

CNN —Since President-elect Donald Trump’s political comeback on Tuesday, Brazil’s former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters have celebrated his victory as their own. New York CNN —Over the past three years, Elon Musk has met dozens of times with presidents, prime ministers, lawmakers, government officials and political candidates from around the world. Other meetings, such as a recent conversation with Argentine President Javier Milei, the world only glimpses through the billionaire’s social media posts. Recently, Musk’s political activism has begun to have a tangible impact on his companies: Brands pulled their advertisements from X, tanking its value. CNN’s analysis also suggests that Musk has, in particular, worked to develop influence among a set of right-leaning world leaders, including Modi, Bolsonaro, Milei and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Now, as he campaigns for Trump, Musk may be setting himself up for his most prominent political role yet: a position in a possible future Trump White House.

Marçal, an anti-establishment political novice who has surged in the polls with his vitriolic attacks on adversaries, ran a social media campaign with little funding and no TV time. Polls showed that candidates linked to Lula are facing trouble as the president's popularity has slipped in his third non-consecutive term. On the right, candidates associated with hard-right former President Jair Bolsonaro have fared better, even though he was banned from seeking elected office until 2030 for his unfounded attacks on Brazil's voting system. Some Brazilian users reconnected with X on Wednesday despite the Supreme Court's recent nationwide ban, the result of the social network apparently changing the way its servers are accessed. That rendered X effectively inaccessible in the country until Wednesday, with AP journalists among those who had access. It acts as a proxy between users and X's servers, filtering traffic and preventing the original Internet Protocol (IP) address from being recognized, Diogenes told The Associated Press. Former president Jair Bolsonaro celebrated the return of the social network. CNN —A mayoral debate in the Brazilian city of São Paulo turned ugly when one of the candidates attacked a rival with a chair. Video from the debate, broadcast live on Sunday by TV Cultura, shows a tense exchange between José Luiz Datena and Pablo Marçal before Datena swings the chair at his counterpart. Datena later told TV Cultura that he had attacked Marçal – who required hospital treatment for his injuries – because he had brought up old sexual harassment allegations against Datena that were dismissed several years ago. “He came with a case that was archived, that was not even investigated by the police because there was no evidence. TV Cultura said it regretted the incident and had pressed ahead with the discussion in accordance with the rules after the other candidates agreed.

Brazil's supreme court announced Friday that it ordered banks to transfer funds from Starlink and X accounts to pay fines the court levied against Elon Musk's social network. Following the transfers, the court ordered that the frozen bank accounts and assets of X and Starlink be released, saying there was no longer any need to keep them. The court suspended X at the end of August, and the suspension remains in place. CNN —Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva says the world isn’t obliged to put up with billionaire Elon Musk’s “far-right anything goes” agenda because of his immense wealth. “The Brazilian justice system may have given an important signal that the world is not obliged to put up with Musk’s extreme right-wing anything goes just because he is rich,” the president said. Lula da Silva’s comments are the latest salvo in a long-running feud with Musk over free speech, far-right accounts and misinformation in the country. Over the weekend, Brazilians, including the president, bid farewell to X, with some posting links to their profiles on other social media platforms. Deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon rainforest slowed by nearly half compared to the year before, according to government satellite data released Wednesday. It’s the largest reduction since 2016, when officials began using the current method of measurement. In the past 12 months, the Amazon rainforest lost 4,300 square kilometers (1,700 square miles), an area roughly the size of Rhode Island. Brazil’s deforestation surveillance year runs from August 1 to July 30. Amazon deforestation has steeply declined since the end of far-right President Jair Bolsonaro’s rule in 2022.
