Amazon on Friday announced it would invest an additional $4 billion in Anthropic, the artificial intelligence startup founded by ex-OpenAI research executives. Anthropic is the company behind Claude — one of the chatbots that, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, has exploded in popularity. In March, Amazon’s $2.75 billion investment in Anthropic was the company’s largest outside investment in its three-decade history. The companies announced an initial $1.25 billion investment in September 2023. In September, Anthropic rolled out Claude Enterprise, its biggest new product since its chatbot’s debut, designed for businesses looking to integrate Anthropic’s AI.

I'm not interested in Mars," Gwynne Shotwell, the SpaceX president and COO told Baron Capital founder Ron Baron at his firm's annual investment conference last week. "I don't like camping, and I think it will be a long time before Mars is nice enough — probably not in my lifetime." Nevertheless, like her boss, Shotwell's visions for SpaceX remain stratospheric: accessible space travel for all, global proliferation for satellite internet, and yes, eventually, interplanetary travel and living. SpaceX, unlike Tesla, is not traded as a public stock, and is therefore not required to post financial results. But Baron assured his investors — who can own SpaceX exposure through some of the firm's mutual funds — it has been a profitable play.

Following the trade, Jim Cramer's Charitable Trust will own 750 shares of AVGO, increasing its weighting to about 3.50% from about 3.25%. We're nibbling on Broadcom shares, buying back the second half of the 100 shares we sold in June at a split-adjusted price of $181. Like most chip stocks excluding Nvidia, Broadcom has fallen from its recent highs. Shares of this AI chip designer and software company have pulled back nearly 12% since closing at a high of nearly $186 apiece on Oct. 9. Jim waits 45 minutes after sending a trade alert before buying or selling a stock in his charitable trust's portfolio.

Simply put, the leading maker of AI chips again fell victim to the curse of high expectations. Through its Nvidia AI Enterprise service, Nvidia is in the process of building out a potentially massive software business. Now, as we start this next generation, we'll be seeing models run on 100,000 Blackwell chips — and scaling is still in effect. Huang's argument is that going beyond 100,000 Blackwell chips will yield even more capable models. It's a fair question to ask because Nvidia's stock has historically taken a pretty big hit when its customers – such as cloud-computing providers – start uttering that phrase.

The Baron Growth Fund (BGRFX) , Baron Small Cap Fund (BSCFX) and Baron Discovery Fund (BDFFX) all invest in the small-cap universe, and they have produced double-digit annualized returns since inception and outperformed their respective benchmarks, according to Morningstar. Total small-cap growth exposure recently hit a 10-year low when investors are shunning the asset class. The Baron Growth and Small Cap funds were created in the 1990s, while the Baron Discovery Fund was launched in 2013. Small companies, which are more domestic-oriented and cyclical, are seen as beneficiaries from President-elect Donald Trump's tax cuts and protectionist policies. "We do an incredible amount of research on these companies, which allows us to find small companies that can have great competitive advantage.

AdvertisementKatie Vasquez landed her first venture capital job at 23 years old. This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Katie Vasquez, a 26-year-old investor at Calibrate Ventures based in Santa Monica, California, on her experience working in venture capital. I'm an investor at Calibrate Ventures, an early-stage deep-tech venture capital firm. My advice for other people hoping to get into VC is to leverage your network and stay up to date on the industry. This experience provided a great foundation for thinking more about technical due diligence, tech architecture, and strategy, but moving into investing and venture capital felt like the most exciting path.
