AdvertisementTrump picked Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to co-lead DOGE, a new government efficiency commission. Their aim is to cut government spending, and one idea they've floated is to ax federal agencies. Almost half a million people were employed in the Department of Veterans Affairs, while the Department of Education had just over 4,000. Most departments had six-figure average salaries, with the Department of Education and the Department of Energy having the highest averages. Part of the reason is due to a tax credit program that the Cybertruck has been largely left out of. Tesla is offering the Cybertruck for lease a year after the EV company made its first deliveries to customers. However, leasing an EV offers buyers another way to take advantage of the tax credit program without meeting every requirement. Through what's known as a "leasing loophole," dealerships can receive the tax credit and choose to pass those savings on to the buyer or lessee. But Tesla's Cybertruck has largely been left out of the federal incentive program.

On Tuesday, the Internal Revenue Service announced its annual inflation adjustments for 2025, including updates to the federal income tax brackets and standard deduction. The standard deduction — which is the amount of money you can reduce from your income before it's taxed, if you choose not to itemize your deductions — will increase to $15,000 for individual filers, $30,000 for joint filers and $22,500 for heads of household in 2025, the IRS says. While you may not feel the difference until you file your taxes in 2026, the 2025 tax year will also use updated federal income tax brackets. You can see the tax rates single filers will pay on their taxable income below. Taxable income is calculated by subtracting your itemized deductions or the standard deduction, whichever is greater, from your adjusted gross income.

The latest benefit from the artificial intelligence revolution: saving American taxpayers billions of dollars. The U.S. Treasury Department said its increased use of artificial intelligence in fraud detection helped prevent or recover more than $4 billion over the past year. "Helping ensure that agencies pay the right person, in the right amount, at the right time is central to our efforts." A Treasury official declined to provide specific examples of how AI had been deployed, given the nature of the activities targeted. The Department said it plans to lend resources and lessons-learned from its AI efforts to other federal agencies.

Dividend stocks could be poised to get their moment in the sun as interest rates fall – and investors only need to take a simple step to boost their long-term returns in these positions. "As rates fall, we might see people looking for longer-term alternatives and, in turn, dividend-paying stocks," he said. For starters, it's a form of dollar-cost averaging into a position, meaning you're buying the stock at regular intervals regardless of the price. "It allows them to reinvest this dividend on a regular scheduled timeframe and have a great opportunity for a larger total return over the long term." The ProShares S & P 500 Dividend Aristocrats (NOBL) has a total return of nearly 15% in 2024 and an expense ratio of 0.35%.

New York CNN —The federal government’s bet on using artificial intelligence to fight financial crime appears to be paying off. The Treasury Department credited AI with helping officials prevent and recover more than $4 billion worth of fraud overall in fiscal 2024, a six-fold spike from the year before. US officials quietly started using AI to detect financial crime in late 2022, taking a page out of what many banks and credit card companies already do to stop bad guys. The Treasury’s use of AI to fight financial crime is just getting started. Officials are testing new data sources to better spot fraud and shady payments, and they are teaming up with state agencies to fight unemployment insurance fraud.

The statement criticized congressional Republicans for not including additional funding for disaster relief, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Small Business Administration. The White House also warned that it would oppose any funding cuts to the Internal Revenue Service in final appropriations legislation. President Joe Biden and many congressional Democrats staunchly opposed plans to include the SAVE Act in the government funding bill. But it was Johnson's own caucus members who defeated his initial funding measure, when 14 House Republicans voted against it on Sept. 18. House Republican aides said Sunday that the funding proposal could reach the House floor for a vote as soon as Wednesday.

Under the proposal, new small businesses could spread the deduction out over several years, or delay claiming the $50,000 tax deduction until the company turned a profit. The Internal Revenue Service has previously run into issues ensuring that its small business tax breaks end up in the right pockets, especially during the pandemic, when the agency flagged a spike in fraudulent claims. The Harris campaign did not respond to a request for clarification about which startups and small businesses would be eligible for the tax deduction. On Wednesday, Harris will also set a goal of collecting 25 million new small business applications in her first term if she is elected president. By focusing on small businesses, Harris' tax deduction proposal could help her thread the needle between rebutting Trump's attacks, and keeping up her political crusade against corporate greed.

It was a moment the political world had been wondering about for weeks. If Vice President Kamala Harris had a good convention, would it knock former President Donald J. Trump further off his game? Would all that positive press for Ms. Harris — the big ratings, celebrity froth and the double-barreled Obama zingers — drive Mr. Trump deeper into his most self-destructive patterns? Mr. Trump had turned up at the restaurant to stand among service industry workers and promote his “no tax on tips” policy proposal. He stayed mostly focused — he did not talk all about himself but rather about the plight of waiters and bartenders.

The situation has prompted Hunter Biden to add noted defense attorney Mark Geragos, who runs his firm out of Los Angeles, for the tax trial. The Delaware trial lasted seven days, but a tax trial is expected to last much longer, meaning at a far greater cost for the defendant. A previous deal between Hunter Biden and special counsel David Weiss to avoid trials and potentially prison time a year ago fell apart in dramatic fashion. Lunden Roberts, the mother of one of Hunter Biden’s children whom he had a child support battle over, has also been subpoenaed to testify, her lawyer says. Hunter Biden’s attorneys Lowell and Geragos have experience advocating for high-profile pardons.

Look out for the Social Security tax torpedo. It may be heading toward the hull of your retirement accounts as we speak. I’m in favor of taxing Social Security benefits, as the United States has done since 1983. In certain circumstances, because of the tax torpedo and another twist nicknamed the capital gains bump zone, someone in the 12 percent tax bracket who takes a $1,000 retirement distribution could end up paying $499.50 in tax — for a marginal rate of nearly 50 percent. There are ways to protect yourself from paying more tax than necessary, but they’re not simple.

A light rain fell at the Zurich airport one Sunday morning in January 2023 as Sarah Kate Ellis made her way from a seat in Delta’s most exclusive cabin to a waiting Mercedes. It was there to chauffeur her to the Swiss Alps, where she and her colleagues would stay at the Tivoli Lodge, a seven-bedroom chalet that cost nearly half a million dollars to rent for the week. Ms. Ellis, who was en route to the World Economic Forum in Davos, doesn’t run a Wall Street bank or a high-flying tech start-up. She is the chief executive of the nonprofit organization GLAAD, one of the country’s leading L.G.B.T.Q. The trip was part of a pattern of lavish spending at GLAAD, much of it by Ms. Ellis, that may have violated the organization’s own policies as well as Internal Revenue Service rules.

The New York Times reviewed dozens of expense reports and receipts from January 2022 through June 2023, as well as employment agreements, tax filings, audit reports and other financial documents to detail a pattern of lavish spending at the nonprofit organization GLAAD, one of the country’s leading L.G.B.T.Q. advocacy groups. Such perks, luxurious business travel and large pay packages might be commonplace at a for-profit company. But legal experts said they were inappropriate for a nonprofit organization with about 60 employees that, in exchange for being exempt from federal and state taxes, must ensure that executive pay is reasonable and aligned with the charity’s mission and the intent of donors. The spending, much of it by GLAADs chief executive Sarah Kate Ellis, may have violated the organization’s own policies as well as Internal Revenue Service rules, the Times reporting shows.
