Indigenous researchers are up against a ticking clock: Of the 4,000 Indigenous languages worldwide, one dies every two weeks with its last speaker. He leads First Languages AI Reality, an initiative of the Mila-Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute, where researchers are building speech recognition models for over 200 endangered Indigenous languages in North America. However, first, he must overcome a major roadblock: There aren’t enough Indigenous computer scientist graduates — people who know the language and culture — to tackle these language preservation projects. “We only graduate one or two Indigenous Ph.D.s in AI and computer science every year,” he said. The open-source AI models will be provided externally by Orange with a free license for non-commercial uses including public health and education, the company said. Macy’s on Monday said an employee responsible for managing accounting for small package deliveries concealed up to $154 million in expenses over the course of nearly three years. Macy's said it discovered the issue while preparing its financial report for the three-month period ending Nov. 2. The company said the employee, who was responsible for the accounting of small package delivery expenses, "intentionally made erroneous accounting accrual entries" to hide about $132 million to $154 million from the fourth quarter of 2021 through the most recently completed quarter. The independent investigation hasn't identified any other Macy's employee, the company said. The move will leave 350 Macy’s locations, as well as Bloomingdale’s and Bluemercury beauty and skin care stores, which the company said have been “outperformers” within the Macy’s portfolio.

CNN —The father of an Australian teenager who died from methanol poisoning while on a backpacking holiday has issued a plea to the Laos government to fully investigate his daughter’s death and ensure such incidents don’t happen again. Bianca Jones, 19, was one of six foreign tourists who died in a suspected mass methanol poisoning in Vang Vieng, a popular backpacker destination in northern Laos. CNBC's Jim Cramer on Monday reviewed investors' reaction to President-elect Donald Trump's latest cabinet pick, hedge fund manager Scott Bessent. His takeaway is that Wall Street believes the potential Treasury secretary will be a prudent force in the administration. "What matters is that this Treasury secretary designate is a serious person, not unlike Steven Mnuchin before him," he said "And those who believed Trump couldn't get a dollop of rigor in the cabinet — well, they've been proven wrong." Cramer also pointed out that Treasury yields fell, with the 10-year sliding to about 4.28% when investors were worried about it hitting 4.5% a few days ago. "That's where Scott Bessent, the Treasury Secretary designate, comes from, so the fence sitters and skeptics are jumping on the Trump bandwagon as if the president elect said, 'higher stock prices and lower taxes for all.'"

Some of the nation’s leading civil rights groups told NBC News that they are gearing up for a flood of legal battles to protect the protesters. Under Rubinstein, America First Legal has in the past year filed four lawsuits that provide a glimpse into how the Trump administration could differ from its predecessor. America First Legal alleges in the suits that the State Department, the Justice Department, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education have protected pro-Hamas extremists. Rubinstein in an interview brought up an additional law he expects a second Trump administration could enforce. The Knight Institute said although it expects the new Trump administration to aggressively police speech, it is prepared to fight back.
