CNN —Huge crowds of devotees gathered across India this month to celebrate the Hindu festival Ganesh Chaturthi, marking the birth of the deity Ganesha, the elephant-headed, round-bellied god of prosperity and wisdom. Ganesh Chaturthi falls each year in late summer, during the Bhadra month in the Hindu calendar, and marks a celebratory time of year when families gather. Pay attention to the sakura forecast. The trees only bloom for a short window, so you don't want to miss it. Cherry blossoms reach full bloom in just a few weeks and only stay in full bloom for about one or two weeks. In order to witness peak blooming, I recommend referring to the sakura forecast calendar from the Japan Meteorological Corporation. The most recent forecast, released on February 22, estimates the peak bloom to be around March 21 in Tokyo and most of mainland Japan and between April 4 and 20 in most of northern Japan.

Hong Kong CNN —Thick roots tumble across a dilapidated house, the snake-like trunks of a banyan tree framing where the front door once stood. “These villages have existed in Hong Kong for hundreds of years, way before the colonial period,” explained Irvine. In the 1950s and ‘60s, as Hong Kong grew as an industrial hub, many people migrated to the rapidly expanding urban centers for better working opportunities. The sensation is a bit unnerving and invokes one of the laws of treehouse building: Heights you wouldn’t think twice about in a concrete structure suddenly become imposing when you’re on a branch. Taka, as everyone calls him — or sometimes Koba-san — is Japan’s best-known treehouse builder. He’s built treehouses for affluent Chinese clients and treehouses for preschools — draws for parents anxious about their children’s detachment from nature. The most modest of his structures, he says, is four square feet; the largest, about 270 square feet. He’s sometimes referred to as a “treehouse architect,” but he doesn’t care for the phrase — “architect” connotes not only degrees and building codes but other constraints, too, like permanence.

But affordability isn't an issue in the world's biggest city, Tokyo. In collectivist Japan, housing policy is designed to benefit the most people possible. Earthquakes and small homesAnother feature of the Japanese housing market is purely situational: The country is a hotspot for earthquakes. Could the US import Japanese housing policy? Japan's housing policy "is now quite well understood" among American housing advocates and scholars, he says, "whereas it was not even three years ago."

Lagos, Nigeria CNN —Architect Tosin Oshinowo is no stranger to versatility. She has designed one of the largest malls in Lagos, Nigeria, beach houses on the city’s coast and homes for internally displaced people in the north of the country. That exclusivity was one of the main challenges for the Lantern House project, says Oshinowo, with strictly enforced restricted working hours that made looming deadlines difficult to meet. Designed by Nigerian architect Tosin Oshinowo, the "Lantern House" is a private residence in the elite Banana Island community in Lagos, Nigeria. The Lantern House features five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, and large wardrobes such as this one.

And then there is the mental effort of focusing awareness on the breath while the mind serves up plans, memories and emotions, not all of them pleasant. “Leave your front door and your back door open,” the Zen master Shunryu Suzuki used to say. Back in the newsroom these days, I’m more able to take a beat amid the stress of breaking news. After the first day on the retreat in June, thoughts of work slipped out the back door. The week ahead would bring fresh headlines, many of misery — more wildfire smoke, contaminated strawberries and deadly tornadoes in the South.

CNN —A statue of an antisemitic politician who is said to have inspired Adolf Hitler is to be tilted 3.5 degrees to the right. In 2012, a section of the Ringstrasse, the city’s central boulevard, that had borne Lueger’s name since 1934, was renamed Universitätsring. Debate over the future of the statue, which was erected in 1926, has been raging for years. The future of the statue, which has been repeatedly defaced, has been hotly debated in Vienna. He was therefore one of Hitler’s teachers,” Ariel Muzicant, president of the European Jewish Congress and former president of the Jewish Community of Vienna, told CNN in an email.

A Poet of the Night Whose Muses Have 9 Lives

Most nights, Hwang In-suk pushes a shopping cart up and down the steep alleys of her Seoul neighborhood, trailed by stray cats that emerge from shadows to greet her under glowing streetlamps and convenience store marquees. Her neighbors tend to think of Ms. Hwang, 64, merely as someone who feeds cats in the street. Only a few know that she is a celebrated poet whose work explores loneliness and impermanence in the South Korean capital. Her decades of writing span a time in which South Korea has cycled through a dizzying number of identities, including those of a country ruled by repressive military dictatorships, a fledgling democracy and, most recently, an economic power and international cultural juggernaut. Ms. Hwang said her nocturnal cat-feeding routine allows her to quietly observe not only cats, her favorite muses, but also her changing neighborhood and the underclass of a megacity that is increasingly known for its flashy exterior.
Monica C. Parker Elena RossiniBetween chief happiness officers, the Happy Planet Index, Gross National Happiness, and the World Happiness Report (Finland scored the highest again this year), it seems as though happiness has some good PR. This one is: What if we’re so fixated on happiness that we’ve failed to question whether happiness is what we should be pursuing? We resist negative emotions such as sadness or fear at our peril. Even better than embracing your negative emotions is embracing both positive and negative emotions at the same time. Wonder makes us less stressed and feel like we have more time.

THE UGLY HISTORY OF BEAUTIFUL THINGS: Essays on Desire and Consumption, by Katy KelleherActivities that we tend to think of as distinctly human often have nothing to do with immediate survival. In “The Ugly History of Beautiful Things,” Katy Kelleher writes about the extreme and sometimes hideous lengths that people have gone to in order to obtain coveted objects of beauty: ruining their health, wrecking the planet, inflicting suffering on others. “I’ve never found an object that was untouched by the depravity of human greed or unblemished by the chemical undoings of time,” Kelleher writes. A journalist who writes about home and design, she realizes that it has been her job to encourage others to do the same. Kelleher points out that an element of ugliness can be part of an object’s appeal, distinguishing between the intriguingly beautiful and the boringly pretty.
Most recently, he debuted in his own comedy special on HBO Max, "Trash White," produced by his childhood icon, Conan O'Brien. They're coming in with their own anger and their own life. I don't think there's a topic in comedy that's off limits because it's too sad. AN: What is it hard to pitch a comedy special about poverty? MS: If you go in like, 'I'm going to do a hilarious comedy special about the economic and generational poverty in this country,' people are like, 'Boooo.'
