An infant has died and 10 adults have been sickened amid a four-state listeria outbreak connected to ready-to-eat meat products, officials said. The outbreak has been tied to ready-to-eat meat produced by Yu Shang Food, Inc. of Spartanburg, South Carolina, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said in an update Friday. The infant who died was a twin whose sibling also died but whose death could not be linked to listeria. Of the eight people sickened, seven shopped at markets where Yu Shang Food products are sold, and two said they recalled eating Yu Shang Food chicken, the CDC update said. “This suggests that people in this outbreak got sick from the same food,” the CDC said in its update.

Dentists began giving kids fluoride treatments. About 70% of community water systems in Florida receive fluoridated water, according to the surgeon general’s release. Parents said their kids’ teeth were full of cavities despite drinking and brushing regularly with what they thought for years was fluoridated water. Adding fluoride to water systems “mitigates the impact of disparities in access to dental care,” said Jetelina, the epidemiologist. “This is one of the beauties of public health — a mainly invisible population intervention, helping the most vulnerable.”Still, the scrutiny continues.

Russia has fired about 60 North Korean KN-23 missiles at Ukraine this year, according to a Ukrainian defense official. These less-sophisticated missiles are part of North Korea’s growing support to Moscow, which also includes about 11,000 North Korean soldiers deployed to Russia’s Kursk region. Strikes using North Korean missiles have killed at least 28 people and injured 213 this year, the Ukrainian prosecutor general told CNN. Ukrainian investigators found evidence that crucial components used in the North Korean missiles are produced by at least nine Western manufacturers. There are more than 250 companies whose components have been identified in North Korean missiles, according to CAR.

For months, European business leaders have watched as Donald J. Trump paved a path back to the White House by doubling down on an “America First” economic policy, putting protectionism and business-friendly tax and regulatory pledges high on the agenda. With the U.S. presidential inauguration less than two months away, they are now furiously lobbying policymakers in Brussels with an appeal of their own: Put Europe First. Nothing has galvanized the European business community quite as urgently as the prospect of a second Trump presidency, this time with Mr. Trump wielding bolder promises to disrupt the global economic order in ways that threaten to leave Europe lagging even further behind. At a business conference in Paris this week, hundreds of corporate chiefs and lobby groups from France, Germany and Italy gathered to discuss just that. They described Mr. Trump’s election as a “wake-up call” for Europe to get its house in order — or face a painful economic fallout.

The results of the study, published Thursday in the journal Science, surprised whale researchers because they suggest the creatures can hear at much higher frequencies than expected. Scientists had never captured baleen whales and tested their hearing before because the animals are so large it could be dangerous to both the whales and researchers. Scientists know, from recordings and other observations, that baleen whales rely on hearing for social communication and that it’s important to their survival. Minke whales were a good target for audio testing because they’re the smallest baleen whale and a species whose hearing scientists don’t understand very well. He said the Minke Whale Hearing Project is on hold, but he’d like to pursue the topic further if he could secure funding.

And with Trump proposing aggressive tariffs on imports from countries spanning the globe, the new Treasury Department chief will have to manage relationships with global finance ministers who may choose to retaliate with tariffs of their own. With inflation moderating over the past year, the Powell-led Fed has cut interest rates as part of a bid to stop high borrowing costs from unduly raising unemployment. “It’s many, many things under one umbrella.”Although people diagnosed with autism often have similar strengths and challenges, “there are many paths to autism and many presentations of autism,” Miller said. Scientists have identified more than 100 genes related to autism, Miller said, and genes are believed to play a role in 60% to 80% of cases. “We’re making leaps and bounds about known genetic causes of autism.”Yet genes clearly don’t explain every case of autism. But only a fraction of children with the genetic mutation actually develop autism, Miller said. He notes that only 8.4% of the $419 million spent on autism research in the United States is devoted to support and services for people with autism.
