India's central bank will launch a pilot program in 2025 offering local cloud data storage to financial firms at affordable prices, according to two sources aware of the matter, who declined to be identified as conversations are confidential. The Reserve Bank of India's planned cloud platform will use local IT firms, pitting it against the likes of Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, Google Cloud and IBM Cloud, in a first-of-its-kind initiative from a major global central bank. In December last year, RBI governor Shaktikanta Das announced plans to set up a public cloud for the financial services industry. Initial work on the cloud is being driven by the research wing of the central bank called the Indian Financial Technology and Allied Services. It will then be developed further in partnership with one or more private sector technology firms, according to the sources.

"From our perspective, AI looks like a really big data problem," said Ben Golub, CEO of decentralized cloud storage company Storj. This startup is joined by legacy enterprises like Dell and IBM in tackling data storage efficiency for economic and environmental sustainability. For those that do go decentralized, Lewis says it's still important to maintain what he calls "centralized management of a decentralized architecture." IBM recently launched its Cloud Carbon Calculator, an AI-informed dashboard designed to give clients access to standards-based greenhouse gas emissions data and help manage their cloud carbon footprint. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced Argentinian energy company Ecogas to suspend in-person services for its 1.4 million natural gas customers spread across a distribution network of almost 30,000 kilometers, the company had to act fast to prepare for a surge in demand for its digital channels. Before the pandemic, in-person transactions were the primary touchpoints for energy customers in Argentina. However, Ecogas knew that digital channels could transform the customer experience, so they began a transformation to deliver seamless online and mobile service channels that allow customers to manage their accounts and pay bills. With in-person services suddenly inaccessible, digital channels became the primary customer touchpoint almost overnight. In fact, around 80% of our customers find the online and mobile channels so convenient that they prefer them to the in-branch experience."
Cloud technology has now percolated through nearly every nook and cranny of Wall Street, affecting everything from investment banking to risk management and marketing. What's motivated the recent trend stems from two things that typically elicit change at financial firms: saving money and moving faster. But at least 30 Wall Street firms and well-known fintechs have publicly sided with one provider as a primary partner. "If you look at Wall Street, they have tens of thousands of people in back offices. Take Citibank, which accidentally wired $900 million to Revlon lenders in what is considered one of the largest blunders ever on Wall Street.
