Giraffe populations are declining at such an alarming rate — from habitat loss, poaching, urbanization and climate change-fueled drought — that US wildlife officials announced a proposal on Wednesday to help protect several of the species. The US Fish and Wildlife Service proposed listing many giraffe species as either endangered or threatened. It’s the first time the long-necked mammals, native to Africa, would receive federal protections under the Endangered Species Act. Declaring a species “endangered” is the most severe level of threat under the law, indicating the species is at immediate risk of extinction. The US has become a significant market for giraffe parts and products, importing nearly 40,000 for at least a decade-long period, a 2018 report showed.

But planning ahead to take advantage of them is getting harder, and that’s largely thanks to Amazon. NBC News’ Holiday Price Check is tracking the online prices of five gift items, each in a popular product category, to determine when the best deals hit. Already, it’s clear that Amazon is often setting the pace. Target, for example, has narrowed the online price gap with Amazon in key product categories since last year, Profitero found. But for retailers, the race for shoppers’ holiday dollars is increasingly a discounting competition.

Nicole Reffitt, a supporter of the Capitol defendants, told NBC News she is pleased with the Gaetz pick. “We need a fighter in leadership, and that’s why I’m backing Matt Gaetz for Attorney General,” Evans wrote. One of Gaetz’s podcasts featuring Beattie was titled “Fedsurrection,” a nickname generated by far-right extremists who have portrayed the Capitol attack as an inside job, without evidence. Given the sheer volume of enemy drones, helicopters have joined the counter-drone fight. In Ukraine and Israel, helicopters of all kinds are hunting down drones. In Ukraine, a huge country compared to Israel, helicopters are a means to shield its airspace against large drone salvos. Prosecutors are instructed to argue that there is a societal interest in the quick administration of justice and these cases should be handled in the normal order. As for new arrests, the law enforcement official said, prosecutors will "focus on the most egregious conduct and cases until the end of the administration." "Just over 1 per day," one of the online "sedition hunters" who has dedicated hours of their life to finding the Trump supporters who brutally assaulted law enforcement officers that day, told NBC News. Existing cases against Jan. 6 defendants are expected to continue with additional trials, sentencing hearings and plea agreement hearings scheduled to take place next week. The prospect of presidential pardons for people who assaulted law enforcement is "pretty demoralizing," the former assistant U.S. attorney said.

A trove of 2,584 silver coins from the time of the Norman Conquest has been bought in the United Kingdom for more than $5 million — making it the country's highest-value discovery ever made by treasure hunters. The coins were purchased by the U.K.’s South West Heritage Trust, an independent organization that supports historical sites, with funding from two charities, the National Lottery and the Art Fund. The South West Heritage Trust's curator of archaeology, Amal Khreisheh, holds one of the uncovered Norman pennies. The coins were likely to have been buried for safekeeping, a common method in the 11th century. That they were never dug up by their owner suggests to historians that they may have been lost or abandoned because of the Battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest.

Cheyenne, Wyoming AP —A famous grizzly bear beloved for decades by countless tourists, biologists and professional wildlife photographers in Grand Teton National Park is dead after being struck by a vehicle in western Wyoming. Unlike many grizzly bears, she was often seen near roads in Grand Teton, drawing crowds and traffic jams. Some believe male grizzlies kill cubs to bring the mother into heat. More than 1,000 people quickly posted comments calling her a queen, a legend and an ambassador for grizzly bears. Hunters sometimes mistake grizzlies for legal-to-hunt black bears or kill grizzlies in self-defense — and wildlife managers often kill grizzlies that prey on cattle and sheep.

This year’s hunter’s moon is also a supermoon, which happens when the moon is closer to the Earth than normal. October's supermoon will be the biggest, brightest supermoon of the year. The hunter’s moon is the first full moon after the autumnal equinox, which occurred on September 22 this year. The lunar event marks the changing of the seasons. The name originated from indigenous people, who benefited from the bright appearance of the moon as hunters prepared for long winters.
The closest supermoon of the year will soon loom large and bright in the autumn sky. October’s hunter’s moon is set to peak at its fullest around 7:26 a.m. Many people associate the hunter’s moon with being orange in color as it rises, but the same could be said of all full moons. Why the full moon is called hunter’s moonThe hunter’s moon is the first full moon after the autumnal equinox, which occurred on September 22 this year. The hunter’s moon is expected to be joined by Jupiter, a red giant star called Aldebaran and the star cluster Pleiades, according to EarthSky.

“It used to be that if you made the median income, you could afford the median-priced house,” said Domonic Purviance, a housing expert at the Atlanta Federal Reserve. Their mortgage rate was 8.125% — above the roughly 7% national average at the time, which was hovering near 20-year highs. While that ratio is less than the cost-burdened 30% threshold, it has doubled in the area in just the last three years. From 2013 to 2023, the median annual household income in the U.S. has risen 50%, to $80,610. For example, McCue said, cost-burdened homeowners may struggle to keep up with home maintenance, leading to unhealthy or unsafe living environments.

CNN —Drought is now so bad in parts of southern Africa that governments say they must kill hundreds of their most captivating, majestic wild animals to feed desperately hungry people. In August, Namibia announced it had embarked on a cull of 723 animals, including 83 elephants, 30 hippos and 300 zebras. Crops have failed, livestock has died and nearly 70 million people are desperately in need of food. They say it’s the opposite: reducing numbers will help protect remaining animals as the drought shrinks food and water resources. Both Namibia and Zimbabwe say professional hunters will ensure entire groups are killed to prevent this.
