CNN —Israel’s military says it has encircled Jabalya, northern Gaza and launched a new ground operation, after seeing signs of Hamas rebuilding, despite nearly a year of fighting and strikes in the territory. The Israeli military issued a fresh evacuation order for residents in northern Gaza, adding it had expanded the scope of the “humanitarian area” in Al-Mawasi. In May, CNN reported that the Israeli military had renewed its fighting in northern Gaza where it had claimed, in January, to have dismantled Hamas’ command structure. During that period, the Israeli military said Hamas was trying to “reassemble” in the area, raising doubts about whether Israel’s goal of eradicating the group in the enclave is realistic. The Israeli offensive that followed in Gaza – which Israel says is aimed at destroying Hamas – has killed more than 41,000 people and triggered a humanitarian crisis.

More than 50 people were stranded Friday at an eastern Tennessee hospital due to fast-rising water and high winds, after several attempts to airlift them failed during a dangerous rescue operation, Ballad Health officials said. The high winds and water levels prevented helicopter crews from airlifting patients and staff from Unicoi County Hospital in Erwin, Tennessee, hospital officials said. “The situation at the hospital is very dangerous,” Ballad Health said on X, adding the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency and National Guard were engaged “in what can only be described as a dangerous rescue operation.”Patients and staff members are evacuated from Unicoi County Hospital on Friday. County leaders in Unicoi initially deployed ambulances but unusually high flooding prevented medics from safely approaching, Ballad Health said. The Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has been working with local emergency management agencies to deploy boats for hospital evacuations, but water surrounding and entering the building became dangerous and impassable.

CNN —Tiger Woods underwent successful back surgery, he announced on Friday, after repeated back spasms and pain contributed to his injury-marred season. The 48-year-old announced on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that he had undergone microdecompression surgery of the lumbar spine for nerve impingement in the lower back. “The surgery went smoothly, and I’m hopeful this will help alleviate the back spasms and pain I was experiencing throughout most of the 2024 season,” Woods said. However, he missed the cut in the last three attempts at the sport’s four flagship events. Dr. Sheeraz Qureshi of the Hospital of Special Surgery in West Palm Beach, Florida performed the surgery and “deemed it to be successful,” Woods’ statement added.

Ron DeSantis’ administration is once again advising against the mRNA vaccines: this time in the most vulnerable residents. In updated guidance for health care providers released Thursday, the Florida Health Department and state Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo questioned the safety and effectiveness of the mRNA Covid vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna, including for older adults and people with underlying health problems. Dr. Paul Offit, a vaccine expert at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said the Florida surgeon general's guidance is unnecessarily alarming people about the Covid vaccines. "The mRNA vaccines are remarkably safe," he added. The CDC currently recommends everyone ages 6 months and older get an updated Covid vaccine this fall from any of the three options.
